When hiring a photographer obviously make sure you like the person and the photos. After that, two things to make sure they have is a second photographer/assistant, and to make sure you understand your rights to the photos after the big day. Most photographers these days do give their print rights to customers but some don't so be careful. Having a second photographer means a LOT less stress for everyone, and guarantees excellent shots through out the day.
