The job Adrian worked on was hanging two vinyl outside gates, removing cedar shingles from the front of the house around the front door and window, stuccoing the area removing and rebuilding the front door jamb and threshold and tiling the small front porch with saulito tiles. Adrian and his partner were very reliable and hard workers. Adrian spent time doing the quote on the spot and adhered to the quote. When some unanticipated problems arose, like running out of tiles (my fault), he went out of his way to solve the problem, find the correct matching tiles and complete the job. Even after finishing, when the screen door was not hung correctly, he came back the next day and fixed it. Very honest, I could rely on his word and he did good work. His prices are very reasonable. I would definitely hire him again.

We hired Cota Ventures for our driveway gate project (7 gates total). From design, to proposal to finished product, Tim was a pleasure to work with and handled each step of the way with refreshing professionalism! My husband works out of town a lot, so I was a little nervous about handling this project mostly by myself. I needn't have worried though. Tim treated me with respect, and never made me feel bad for asking silly questions. A well deserved good review for a job well done!

I needed a retention wall on the perimeter of the house rebuilt after a drunk driver crashed in to it. I had various people call me to give estimates on the reconstruction of the wall and Juan's estimate was the most reasonable one. Juan was able to put up the wall one day less that he had estimated finishing the job. He was also able to rebuilt a wooden gate and repair stucco that was damaged by the bricks of the wall that hit the house. Not only did Juan finished the job quickly and correctly (the original wall was not filled up with the concrete that goes inside the brick by the developers) he was very clean when mixing and laying the cement on the brick wall. After the job was fished, it looked like before the car took down the wall. Very professional and reasonable pricing

I have no other words other than awesome! Greg is very skilled, organized, and efficient. My job was completed in less time than expected, was reasonably priced, and he even returned my surplus paint to me in case I needed to do touch ups later. He constructed, painted, and installed a gate for my property. I am very pleased, and will definitely use him again when needed.

For the past three years, our handy man Mike has built, re-built, repaired and/or installed a variety of things in our 50- year-old home and in our rental units. Most recently, when one of our old gates was splintering and falling off its hinges, Mike built a brand new wooden gate for us, saving us the time and money we would have had to spend ordering a custom made resin gate and waiting for delivery. He has also installed a huge flat screen TV on the wall in our den, a new medicine cabinet and a lighted vanity mirror in our master bathroom and a Boscsh double-oven in our kitchen. The new oven was slightly larger than the original one so Mike made the necessary changes in the cabinetry around it to make it fit nicely. In our rental units, he has installed new cabinets and made various repairs as needed. When it comes to fixing things, Mike consistently shows creativity, determination and skill. About two years ago our clothes dryer started making loud noises and the clothes were taking forever to dry. The sounds were similar to some we had heard a few years ago. At that time we had to call out an appliance repair man and a few hundred dollars later, the dryer was working again. This time we figured it was either another high repair bill or just buy a new dryer. We first called Mike though to see if he might be able to fix it. Mike researched the make and model year of our dryer and found the all the specifications and information he needed, including a complete diagram of the inside of our dryer. He then took apart the dryer and found that there were just one or two parts parts causing the problem. He bought the parts, came back and installed them, and put our dryer back together again! The dryer is still working nicely.

Ross did a number of jobs for us and was truly a pleasure to work with. Very professional, honest and fair. Showed up every day at the same time so I never had to wait around or wonder if he was coming. His work was excellent quality and we really hope to work with him again on future projects. Just a few of the projects he did for us was paint the whole exterior of our home, replaced rotted beams, built a new gate, and installed baseboards.

Excellent work and great customer service! Contacted company through Craigslist advertisement and the owner, Bert, immediately came and did an estimate. Work was completed within less of a week. I had a stone wall built with 2 pillars for sides of driveway gate and also had him redo my walkway and uneven driveway. Bert was always on time, very knowledgable and communicated well with me to make sure I knew what the process would be and to confirm what I wanted. Fast and efficient work and I am very happy with the completed job. I would definitely recommend this company to my family & friends & will go back for any needed future work.

After obtaining 3 competitive quotes, I hired Gabriel Herrera to demolish a failing 17 year old perimeter wood fence around my rental house in Hemet, CA and replace it with new vinyl fencing. The cost difference between new wood and vinyl fencing was negligible given the on-going maintenance requirements for wood versus the durability and ongoing good looks of Vinyl fencing year after year with little to no maintenance required. After signing a contract, Mr. Herrera (and his crew) immediately proceeded with the scope of work which included demolition, hauling away, and installation of 174 L.F. of Vinyl fencing (including installation of 2 man-gates). The project was finished on time in 2.5 days. Quality of the work was excellent and my adjoining neighbors were pleased to the point of desiring his ‘contact information’ for their future use. You can feel comfortable that Gabriel Herrera will do what he says he will do.

Felix did a wonderful job on my gate and the lights in my kitchen! I wish I had hired him from the beginning since he had to redo the work that M&M construction did . He was nice and honest and fair! I have no doubt that I will hire him again and recommend him for anyone who is looking to have work done! Thank you Felix!

Robert showed up same day as the quote was posted. I needed a fourplex painted on the exterior with some gate work as well. He walked/discussed the job, wrote a detailed bid, and started work after my deposit check cleared. The paint job transformed the look of the property and he did some fence repair and painting as well. His work on the iron gates enclosing the courtyard was superb. The job took longer than expected; some sections needed additional work which he was glad to address. The "punch list" items took longer; as yet I have not confirmed they are complete. When all is complete as agreed, I could easily give him five stars. He is hard working, fair in price, and personable.

Kent Fletcher, the No Regrets Handyman, arrives on time, takes pride in his work, is reasonably priced for services rendered, doesn't leave a mess, dependable, and is just a nice guy. You will not have any regrets if you hire him. He's built a fence and gate for me, cleaned out and repaired leaky rain gutters, repaired broken woodwork, and painted.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
