Jake is fantastic to work with! He pays attention to what you're saying and listens to what you need. He has a great sense of humor which makes it so much easier to work on nutrition. He is very knowledgeable about nutrition and fitness. I also appreciate that he takes time to figure out a fitness routine that works for your schedule and lifestyle. I travel a lot for work and he gave me fantastic workout tips that I can use literally anywhere whether there is a hotel gym or not. It's also easy to tell that he is invested in transforming lives. Helping people achieve goals but also live their best lives. Thank you, Jake!

I am a health coach in the South Bay and I know from personal experience how important proper nutrition is for producing results. I've been working with Marc for several weeks and the quality and value of his meals is only surpassed by how much he cares. He has gone above and beyond to understand my personal needs and prepare food that supports my fitness goals as well as my overall health. Marc is more than just a chef. He's a friend, a healer, a coach, and someone I can count on as part of my success team. Thanks for everything Marc!

I've been training with Corey just over a month and with his help I'm seeing results I would have never achieved on my own, and in such a short time! Most people gain weight during the holidays, (I typically do) but with Corey's expertise on the right exercises for me and nutritional advice I actually lost 2 sizes! And I actually feel stronger! That says a lot! especially since I have several medical issues including Hasimoto's (hypothyroid). Corey's workouts are challenging and are making a huge difference for me! I couldn't be happier!

Meghan is a life saver!! I have been working with her for one year as of this month -and just signed up for more! I have lost 40lbs, but more importantly I’m so much stronger. My lower back pain is completely gone and I can do a side plank which is something I always had to modify before Meghan. She will improve your form and is very knowledable about nutrition. My sister and my dad see her every week as well! Self care is priceless, and she is the best!

My experience with Jacobo has been wonderful! Prior to working with Jacobo I had been working out on my own and was making very little progress. However, in the past several months that I have been working with Jacobo I’ve been able to make a great deal of progress. He was able to develop a training method specific to my needs and has been able to work around my busy schedule. He has developed a nutrition program as well as strength and conditioning program that are design to gain the results that I am looking for. He is very knowledgeable and takes pride in his client’s development and success. I am more than happy with my progress and development, I have recommend Jacobo to my closest friends and family.

I've never enjoyed working out (especially in group settings), but as I get older I realize it is necessary for general wellbeing. Starting up with Jason was a great way of easing back into the swing of things while not have to deal with contracts and commercial gyms. His expertise in choosing appropriate exercises movements, scaling, scheduling, as well as sharing some of his nutrition tips, have made our biweekly sessions something I actually look forward to!

Shelly not only makes vegan cooking simple and delicious, she provides the tools and tricks you need to prepare meals for your family! She teaches with love and passion and educates the public about plant-based nutrition and provides the info you need to make the switch from omnivore to vegan or enhance your current vegan lifestyle. I have been vegetarian for 20+ years and vegan for 9 years and I learned so much from Shelly just from one class! I can’t wait to learn more, as she has so much to offer and an entire cook book worth of recipes in her head to impress any chef!

I hired Bekah to help me overhaul my diet and food choices. She shopped with me in the grocery store and taught me how to read nutrition labels. From there we did cooking lessons once a week until I felt comfortable in the kitchen cooking vegan food for myself. My health was not in good shape before I committed to trying a plant-based diet. Since Bekah's help, I am losing weight each week, have way more energy, feel much lighter and have a great new perspective on food and health. Safe to say my life is changing for the best! Bekah knows food and nutrition and is absolutely passionate about helping people. If you are looking to improve your health and make the switch to plant-based, I highly recommend contacting her!

Life-changing. I've had chronic migraines for as long as I can remember, and with Aaron's help, they have decreased almost completely. Aaron focuses on holistic nutrition, which is such a welcome change from most doctors and pharmacists I have spoken to about the same issue, and truly listens to his patients. With a simple vitamin supplement and small dietary change, my condition has improved incredibly. His recommendations are simple, spot-on, and effective. Aaron also followed up multiple times, which is extremely appreciated.

I was introduced to Elayne Good about two years ago. At that time I couldn't boil water. Elaine has painstakingly taught me about food, food combinations, food preparation, and general education on nutrition. I have watched her in the kitchen and marveled at the fact that she is like a chemist. She experiments with foods and flavors and ingredients and can come up with inventive and delicious new foods in a single meal. I adore this woman and could not recommend her highly enough. She is brilliant she is warm she is an incredible chef.

I came to Kay Curtis with certain physical conditions that were not optimum. I wanted to lose weight and I would get tired in the middle of the day. I have lost 14 pounds and I have more energy than ever. She found the exact right way for me to eat and the exact supplements to make everything better fast! I have recommended her to gobs of people and the smart ones have gone to see her too! She helped me understand the body, nutrition and food in a whole new way.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.

How much does a nutritionist cost?

A nutritionist provides expertise and guidance to help clients with all diet-related health matters, including losing weight, gaining muscle, improving their sports performance, and managing diabetes or high cholesterol. Nutritionists can help people learn to follow special diets in a healthy way, such as becoming vegetarian or vegan or developing a low-sodium or gluten-free eating plan. The average national cost of a nutritionist is $60 to $100. Nutritionists often require an initial consultation with a new client, during which they’ll take a medical history, assess the client’s nutritional needs, and determine the best course of action; this first meeting usually averages $100-$120 for a 45-minute to 90-minute consultation. Subsequent nutritional counseling sessions generally cost less, ranging from an average of $45 for a half-hour session to $60-$90 for a one-hour session. Like many professional service providers, nutritionists may offer discounts through package pricing. For instance, a one-month package with two sessions and email support costs an average of $190; a three-month package with three sessions and email support costs an average of $360; and a six-month package with six sessions and email support costs an average of $540.

Are nutritionists covered by health insurance?

Nutrition counseling can be a critical component of good health care, especially for people recently diagnosed with diabetes or high cholesterol who need to adhere to a specific diet. People also meet with nutritionists for help developing a healthy vegetarian or vegan diet, developing an eating plan to lose weight or gain muscle, or improving their sports performance by changing their diet. Nutritionists may be covered by health insurance depending on your reason for meeting with them. Nutrition counseling is more likely to be covered if it is part of a doctor-prescribed treatment for a particular medical condition, such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure or coronary heart disease. For example, Medicare covers medical nutrition therapy services only for people diagnosed with diabetes or kidney disease, as long as they get a referral from their doctor. Also, insurance providers more often cover nutrition visits if the patient has been referred to a registered dietitian within the carrier’s network of providers. Insurance plans vary greatly, so research your benefits before visiting a nutritionist.
