Since May 7, 2018 I have been taking weekly sewing classes with Berna Alvarado. I love learning how to sew from her. She has a good sense of humor, tells wonderful stories about her sewing experience, and shows great enthusiasm for her subject. Berna explains different sewing procedures very clearly and patiently. In the beginning she suggested I bring my own sewing machine to class so that I would get used to it and be able to complete my "homework" at home. I made a linen tot bag with pockets, straps, and a lining within the first two lessons. Since then she has shown me how to install a zipper in a small make-up bag. She also taught me to hem several panels of fabric to be used for Hawaiian costumes for my hula dance class. I've learned important things like how to cut and measure fabric efficiently; how to thread a bobbin; "not to worry when you make mistakes because that is how you learn," says Berna; and how to fold fabric and use an iron so that I don't need to pin every piece before I sew it. Although Berna has certain projects in mind for me to work on, she is very interested in what I specifically want to learn to sew: our next project is to sew a Hawaiian floral full-length dress with two ruffles. She has years of experience sewing clothes for herself, dance costumes, drag queen outfits, draperies, and teaching all levels of sewing students. Berna is also a wonderful resource--she has directed me to inexpensive sewing shops for materials and recommended a great place for me to have my own sewing machine serviced. I look very forward to my lessons. They are fun and very informative. I highly recommend Berna Alvarado to anyone who wants to learn to sew!
Laura has done several sewing sessions for me. First I took my favorite old shirt to her and she made 4 shirts from it in different fabrics, so now I have 4 favorite new shirts. The best thing Laura ever made for me was a Game of Thrones type dress for a masquerade party. She took pains to make the details to my specification and make sure that it fit perfectly. Thanks Laura!
Really enjoyed the "Intro to the Machine" sewing class and it taught me what I wanted to learn to get comfortable with basic tasks on a sewing machine that used to seem so daunting. It inspired me to buy my own sewing machine and start on some projects!
Dawna possesses many special talents; she is an intrepid knitter and a fabulous knitting instructor. For the last two years, I have had the pleasure of take a number of Dawna's knitting classes (Sock club and Shawl Knitting Group). She is a professional yet her approach is very caring. Dawna's knitting knowledge is vast and her own desire to learn new techniques is obvious. She is able to inspire confidence to her students and she is always well prepared for her classes. I feel grateful to have an instructor like Dawna inspire my knitting.
Linda gave an excellent instructional sewing program. She walked our group of 25 thru all the steps of making our project. Linda worked individually with everyone as she walked around the room checking on the attendees. The program was enjoyed by all of us!
Amazing results!!! My daughter drew the dress she wanted for her senior prom. Lisa brought the dress from the sketch book to life. My daughter was so excited!! This was not an easy job. Every detail was a challenge. Lisa is really a master at her craft. She went above and beyond to make this a most memorable experience. Thank you Lisa for being great at what you do. You were a pleasure to work with and we will definitely use your services again!
She does amazing work. Very clean and detail orientated. I watched her put together a wedding dress to perfection!!!
It was very difficult for me to learn how to knit, so I am an exceptionally patient instructor. Our classes are always fun and easy going. We are a small shop, tucked discretely inside of a beauty salon, so if you also need some highlights or a cut, you're in luck! I love watching someone fall in love with knitting for the first time. Whether they are 5 years old or 95 years old, it's very rewarding when a student gets to the point where knitting is actually fun and relaxing. I also love it when parents of young knitters tell me stories about how knitting has improved life in their homes.
In my sewing classes, I teach small groups of 5 or six students, I adapt to each one's project, so that every student leave with a personal creation. I teach on how to be creative with recycled materials and how to work with different fabrics, how to come up with unusual pieces with the traditional techniques, but also by breaking the rules. Just an overall an instructional and fun experience. All of it, I truly enjoy teaching, meeting with new students, help them through their challenges...I love it all

I started my business to share my love of all things paper crafting with my local community. I love the process of designing and creating, but my passion is in sharing the craft and teaching others.
I use art as a way to teach people how to access their creative mind. You may have heard talk about a right brain and left brain thinking; I am here to tell you we all have both. Nobody is running around with half of their skull empty. We expect everyone to learn math and english even when they are more artistic. We should challenge everyone with creative exercise in the same way. You are as creative as you train yourself to be. Children are really good at it because they don't set limits. So why not encourage them to stay creative? I work with my students in a very different way, I do not hold up an example of my work and make them copy it, nor do I purchase kits for them to make. As a matter of fact I don't even care if they make a finished product at all. I introduce a combination of materials each session and I explain how they are to be used and what I get them to do. I then invite the students to try. My greatest joy comes when one or two look up and say "can we do whatever we want"? Such a request screams to me. There is no intention of a final product, just a child asking if they can explore their own imagination. This is where genious lives, and this is how I teach. I can come to your home or to your school. I am available to help you reevaluate your current art program. I am also available to adults and corporations who are looking for executive training in creativity and managing creative people.
