Introduction

Lesson plans are designed to fit individual needs for challenge, growth, progress, heightening confidence and skill levels at the student's comfortable pace. I pay attention to what students want and deliver the goods. I also lead in presenting options of skills that are important. Lessons are fun, safe, and relaxed. Being engaged in the creation of good music, musicians, and singers is the most rewarding I can think of doing. I enjoy seeing my students grow as independent practitioners of musical and performing arts.

I interviewed a number of teachers before I decided to work with Mr. Kalman and he turns out to have been a perfect choice. Though I'm a beginner and haven't had experience with other piano teachers, I have had plenty of experience with teachers, and was a teacher myself, so I know an excellent teacher when I see one, and, in this case, have one. I just retired and although I don't expect to be a star pupil, or play recitals, I've wanted to learn piano all my life and I'm willing to do the work. But as Rich reminds me, it's important to keep the emphasis on "play" in playing the piano. The lessons are fun and Rich is encouraging, but he does give me homework and holds me to task. I can see and feel how much he loves music and am so happy that he so expertly passes on this joy.

Becoming a student of Richard's helped get me moving in the musical direction I'd always wanted to, but had yet been too nervous to attempt (sopranos don't sing jazz, right?! think again!). He not only helped coax me out of my musical shell and comfort zone with singing, but made it so much fun, and I will forever be grateful I signed up for that first class with him. Highly recommended!

I hired Richard through Thumbtack in the Fall of 2016 and have been exceptionally pleased with my progress with he as my vocal instructor. Richard came prepared with anatomical vocal research information which explained how vocal music is created and songs and/or exercises and songs which build and expand your vocal abilities. He's able to determine your vocal range as a singer, instruct you in proper breathing technique, pitch/key recognition, and determine the key which your voice best compliments a song. I'm planning on continuing my vocal education and experience with Richard Kalman.

How did you get started doing this type of work?
Singing was a life long love from childhood. It took many years and several careers before I realized I could pursue it as a career, and when I did, I was ready to embrace it wholly.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I am the vocal director of a jazz big band. Recently, we purchased a song which called for a vocal quartet to perform with the big band. I put together the quartet, rehearsed them away from and with the big band. We then performed the piece in concert to a very appreciative audience.
