John is a reliable and trust worthy handyman. We enjoy him as a person and the job we had him do was remove some plastic crown molding from our ceiling/walls and remove a wooden built in desk. While the price was agreed upon between us both, once the job was finished and I worked out the cost per hour I paid double what I normally would have, but the job was done in a timely manner and he was very clean, I appreciate when people clean up well after themselves. Also John is a gentleman and I trust him as a person and wouldn't hesitate to have him in our home, that is a huge positive. If you want a trust worthy, reliable, clean and professional handyman I wouldn't hesitate to call John. I will use him again for sure and next time I think I will consider the cost rather than jump to say yes, that was my fault not John's to agree to it. John is a rare find.

I can not emphasize enough how happy we are with Martinez Flooring. From initial contact until final day on the job, everything exceeded our expectations. There was no stress, the communication was clear, and they were on time. The finished job looked beautiful as we replaced carpet, tile and linoleum with laminate throughout our entire home, including the kitchen and bathrooms. HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend!

We write this review here based on our great experience with Eyal at Excel Construction. Eyal’s vision for our new layout of the kitchen, worked out very well and was set within our price range. He spent several hours back and forth with us in order to understand us first and then to bring us the best design while walking us through the entire remodeling process from start to finish. All the people that worked at our house, were polite, quick, responsive, experts and focused. Combined all of that together, ended up with a terrific results. Each day the house was cleaned and organized before they left home. The complete remodeling took 5 weeks and it was fully worth the wait. They installed all the required appliances, hardware flooring, marble countertop, all the cabinets, backsplash, sink and faucet. Eyal who was the main supervisor on our project, replied to all of our questions and he made sure that each change or tweak will be done at no time. It was clear enough that their customer service and satisfaction was very important to Eyal and the crew. They left the new kitchen in a very high quality and workmanship. We would recommend them!

Vahe did an incredible job on removing some very cheaply installed carpet from my staircase. He was able to save the original wood and make them match my flooring. He was able to work on this project very quickly and stayed within a budget I could afford. I would definitely recommend him over anyone.

The project was to move a door in our master bedroom and change it to a pocket door. It required him to build new supports, install new drywall, paint, etc. Oscar did a great job and was very responsive to all of our questions. He even went to Home Depot to pick up all of the necessary materials. Will be looking to hire Oscar the next time we have a project at our house. Thanks Oscar!

It was a pleasure working with Sherry and Marc I dont know where to start. Both are very knowledgeable in there fields and they took a personal interest to guarantee we were satisfied with all our tile, cabinet and floor work. They were accommodating to all the changes we made during our project. We have hired them for several other jobs since and will continue to do so and refer them to family and friends. They provide superior quality craftsmanship and offer full service from design, project supervision, and technical expertise from style to material.  It's been a joy to work with them both . What I admire about them most is that they puts there clients needs first and make every effort to adjust and accomodate and make the construction process move smoothly. Working with them was a pleasure.

Although we decided to go with a laminate floor, Eduardo's price to refinish our hardwood floor was great. He was very professional and punctual when we met for the estimate. His price was excellent - good value for the money. Very fair price. Would definitely recommend to refinish a floor.

Soo good - very happy with concrete and tile job in guest house. Like that they didn't turn nose up at work on my weird converted garage - worked hard to troubleshoot all its issues and turn it into a lovely guest house! Also came early each day, just as promised, and worked hard all day - both unusual for LA.

We hired Floorchain Inc. for the installation of laminate flooring that included roughly 700 SF including two very difficult staircases. The staircases were uneven, and not very true. Floorchain spent extra time basically fine tuning each stair until perfection was achieved. We have had many compliments on the staircases alone, that with the entry ways, living area, dining area and hallways, all the work is excellent. Armen did everything he said he would do, stuck to the plan and gave professional answers and advice to any questions we had. Further when there was any item that was questionable he made sure that it was addressed and made corrections immediately. Floorchain Inc. was professional, dedicated to customer satisfaction, delivered high quality product and excellent craftsmanship.

Alfred's team was great to work with. They were quick and professional and were amenable to changes we had. He initially said the floors would take 4 days and the team only needed 3. Would recommend him and his team for any floor install needs! We had nasty carpet and laminate throughout the house and the new floors look amazing!

tommy asked me to leave a review and I’m happy I have the chance to tell people about my experience, they were amazing, they remodeled my bathroom,l. It looks stunning, beyond what we expected. I didn’t order enough tiles and Tommy and no charge to me went hunting for this exact tile, they were always here the time they said they would be, finished the job when they were supposed to, just all around pleasant people to deal with, they did an amazing job and I have referred them to friends and I will be using them for my next project.

I submitted my project on Thumbtack and literally within only 1 or 2 minutes, I got a call from Rex Contractors. They asked me a few questions and sent their project manager out to check out my property and gave me an estimate. Their estimate was in the middle, but that's ok, because we weren't looking for cheap contractors. We've had bad experiences with cheap contractors in the past before. We hired them and they did a complete kitchen remodel for us. Which included flooring, paiting, appliances, new cabinets and installed recessed lighting. They also did 2 bathrooms for us, which included tile flooring, vanity, tub replaement, and painting. This was for both bathrooms. They also did hardwood flooring through out the whole house and interior painting.. The whole project took about 2 months and we are very happy with the workmanship and customer service with the Rex team!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
