Fantastic customer service. I needed a front home door fixed immediately as it would not stay closed or locked. I called and the repairman was out within the hour and fixed the door within 45 minutes. Fantastic customer service, responsiveness, professionalism and punctuality! Highly recommended. Well worth the $85 I paid. I plan to use them again for an even bigger project.

Tom is great. Very happy I found him. I did work on our bathroom renovation, including: vanity install (very tricky IKEA cabinet that other handymen couldn't handle), plumbing, electrical, patching & paint, window install, and stucco repair. I immediately extended him to do some work on our front and back doors. All great. And now, I've hired him again to build a fence and gate for us in the front yard. I will be calling him again in the future, and I encourage anyone reading this to do the same!

Jovani responded promptly to my Thumbtack request for quotes - in fact he's the only person who contacted me. I felt his price was reasonable, and the installation of the new window went quickly and smoothly. Will definitely keep his number and recommend him to others!

Mr Mayroga is the ultimate professional. He knows his trade, he charges a VERY REASONABLE. price for his services. I really appreciate that he listened to me, my explanation of having a terrible toilet placed by DWP. He gave me his priced and explained why the toilet jammed. The other plumber didn't listen and still warned that he would first have to access the situation at $180.00 starting price. Thank goodness for honest tradesmen like Platinum Plumbing. I'm already less stressed, and fully assured by Mr Mayorga that the situation will be handled and corrected. I'll even have him speak to my landlords about the dreadful toilets DWP are installing in people's home in the guise of saving water.

Job well done. Knows what he is doing. We'd work with appliance installers before who claim to know what they're doing but ends up with a sloppy job and very discourteous. Ronald proved that there are still a few good workers out there who could do a good job and be pleasant. We'll definitely use his services again.

We wanted to put a pull down ladder door into the attic and found Custom Creations on Thumbtack. Scott responded right away and gave us a good estimate. He even came by a few days before the work day to make sure there would be no surprises and he helped us find the perfect place to install the door. The work was done as planned and clean up was great. We will definitely use Custom Creations for future projects.

These guys installed a new furnace in our house after it died last week. They were extremely fast in ordering, coordinating install and installing the new unit. They even waited for the first hour of operation after install in case of anything going wonky. The guys on site were professional and courteous. I recommend for any AC or heating issue that might arise!

Bruce did an excellent job installing an upstairs window air conditioner and even was able to install in preferred location which we thought impossible. He also identified a safety hazard that we did not know about and fixed it. He really knows what he’s doing and his prices are extremely reasonable.

We recently had our home painted and wanted to add exterior coach lights to both sides of the garage door. We had several quotes for the job (using same materials) and Mike's quote was the most reasonable of them all. We set up an appointment for the job and Mike not only showed up on time but also called to let us know he was on his way (this is rare with most contractors/installers). He performed the work promptly and added a photo cell so the lights turn on at night and off in the morning by themselves. This exterior accent lighting was the finishing touch for our home improvement project which now also adds a bit more security to our dwelling. We were extremely happy with Mike's friendly service, highly recommend him and plan to use him again in the future. American Castles and Mike Tay are class acts!

I first met Brad Snapir in 2011 when we met to discuss adding a second story onto our house in West Los Angeles which included a master bedroom, large bath, two closets and an additional reading room in back of the bedroom. All in all we added around 900 feet or perhaps a little more. It took us many meetings over almost a year's time before my husband and I were ready and prepared to begin the building process. Throughout this whole time Brad was understanding, patient and excellent at offering suggestions as to our remodel and willing to spend hours and hours meeting with us. We began the remodel in September of 2012 and we were back in the house in March of 2013 which was extremely quick. Needless to say there were questions and problems which arose during the building process but my husband, Brad and I were always able to work out whatever the problem was to everyone's satisfaction. If something had to be altered or changed in any way, Brad did it and did it well. We were very happy with the outcome of the remodel and happily moved back into the house after only 6 months although everyone told us it would be a year at least. Well they were wrong. Brad and his crew did the work quickly and well. If anything was not done exactly as I wanted they fixed it to be the way I wanted. I so appreciated the work that when I decided to remodel my kitchen in 2015 I immediately called Brad for the job. He worked with me in designing what I needed and ordering the necessary appliances, tile and countertops. I absolutely love the kitchen and would change nothing. It is exactly what I had in mind. The one other thing I want to point out about Brad is that over the years I have had several very very small jobs at the house which Brad has been so willing to just send one or two or three of his guys in a most timely manner and get the small job done. This has been a god-send as we all know how difficult it is to get work done on small jobs. I would recommend Brad and his company to anyone who wants a remodel large or small done and done well. You can tell by his work he have professional experience for over 35 years. I like how professional his work is done & how polished it is when it"s completed. I had my bathroom painted, a wood frame covered up pluming that the last handyman left out. He helped fix up work that the last handyman left poorly. So I trusted in him to insert 2 bedroom new doors and a wooden gate for my driveway. I highly recommend him. He speaks perfect English & Spanish.

Hector Pena did a great job at installing the windows. What I really liked though is how conscious he was about cleaning up after the installation. He was on time, professional, answered all my questions, and was fairly priced. I would recommend him.

We hired Jeff from Rick Dorn Constrution to install some kitchen cabinets in our remodel. We had cabinets picked out already and he recommended some others of better quality for less. Installation took 2 days and he cleaned up after himself. He also pointed out some other things that should be fixed on our project which was greatly appreciated. We would work with them again.

We had just started our "shopping" for new windows for our home and Al was quick to respond through the app. We set a date to have him come and show us the windows and give a quote on them. We were so impressed with the presentation and the quality of windows that we knew we didn't need to shop around. Al and his team (via phone) were amazing. We even received a call from a member of the family who OWNS the company to thank us for working with them. We are genuinely impressed and happy to be working with Al and can hardly wait when the install will be completed.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
