Jiri was absolutely incredible to work with! I decided last minute to hire movers and sent a Thumbtack request two days before my move. Jiri was the first to respond and answered all my questions quickly. He offered the best price of all the moving companies I looked at and there were no hidden fees. On the day of, him and his team member were fast and efficient. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to move, and would certainly call Jiri again in the future!

I’ve worked with a few moving companies and this was by far my best experience moving. The movers treated all my belongings with care (not a single thing was damaged) and moved them from a third floor apartment to another third floor apartment quickly and efficiently. They were professional and communicative all along the way. I highly recommend Larro’s Moving Service!

Great moving company. The movers have been really friendly and professional. They arrived on time, have been super quick and careful. All at a very fair price point. I had bad experience with other moving companies before, but I can only recommend and would always book again with MEAA. Thank you :)

=== SUMMARY === I am a software engineer in Silicon Valley living in a one-bedroom apartment. The idea of moving all my packed boxes and large pieces of furniture, like my sofa, entertainment center, and bookcases, was extremely daunting. Do I hire friends to help me move? Do I hire expensive professional movers? Do I do it myself and get one of those PODS? "Ain't nobody got time fo' dat!" Steve and Joe from Albion Moving and Storage were able to move all my items into their truck and to their final destinations safely and quickly. Their truck was extremely large, so even the largest pieces had room to be properly lifted in and carried out. What made me pick Albion Moving and Storage over other competitors at first was their cheaper hourly rate and their 2-hour minimum. Whereas most other moving companies require a 3-hour minimum, these guys only required 2 hours. In my head, I felt the job would only take 2-or-so hours, so this made the most sense. Steve and Joe worked extremely quickly and efficiently, and the job legitimately took 3 hours. And that is great. It would have taken my friends and I all day (possibly two) to do everything these guys did in 3 hours. Steve and Joe are extremely nice and awesome. They made sure they knew where each item was going (new apartment or storage) and got everything to its final destination quickly and with great care. I am for sure going to be calling these guys again next time I need to move. This was my first moving experience living on my own, so I was extremely nervous. These guys put me at ease and have gained my trust. Thanks Steve and Joe! === DETAILS === They disassembled my dining table quickly and efficiently to have it all fit in my storage unit I was moving things to. They also let me purchase a sofa cover for $5 (very cheap compared to what the storage facility I was using charges for them). I actually had two places I needed my stuff moved to: A storage unit and my new apartment. This was no problem for them. They put everything into their large truck, went to the storage unit, put in everything that went there, and then drove to my new apartment, where they moved in all the remaining items. I was afraid this "moving items to two places" thing was going to be a problem, but it was not at all. They disassembled and reassembled my bed for me, which was very nice. They brought their own doorstops, and had all the equipment they needed to move even my heaviest piece of furniture (my entertainment center). They also have their own insurance, which is a very important detail when hiring movers. The whole process with them took 3 hours. I already had all of my stuff in boxes and all the furniture empty and ready to be moved. All they had to do was move things from my apartment to the truck, and then from the truck to the new locations. They were very efficient at putting the furniture into my storage unit. Had I been charged with storing the items inside, I would have done it in such a way where it wouldn't have fit. These guys assured me they could fit everything, and were able to make everything fit perfectly on their first attempt. (No rearranging was needed, they had already planned out what would go where as soon as they saw the storage unit and the space they had to work with.) Definitely will hire again!

Bottom line they were excellent. They showed up on time. They were very professional. They were the only moving company that called us back the very same day I posted. I gave them an inventory of everything we had to get moved and they gave an estimated price. They packed the stuff very nicely, nothing was damaged. They did it in a timely manner. They arrived with our stuff on time and started to unpack and put everything where it needed to be,and even reassembled the furniture. Overall very impressed and recommended to everyone. Thank you

This is the best moving company in the Bay area. They are AWESOME! Really cannot say enough about the service, expertise, and care. Having moved three years in a row now, my husband and I consider ourselves to be experienced movers. This is our second time using Smart Move, and we will not use anyone else. Compared to other moving companies here are some notable differences that you can expect when you hire Smart Move: -Wardrobe Boxes (SO key for easily moving your closet! They bring the wardrobe boxes on the day of your move and load your hangers onto the rod. Simple, easy, and not something all moving companies provide. -Speed (These guys are SO efficient!) -Shrink Wrap (Free, they wrapped all my furniture in it and blankets) -Cleanliness and Care (Really cannot say enough about the care that the crew takes in all of your belongings. I've never felt like I need to say a word about fragile items or boxes, because the team takes such pride!) -Friendliness (Need I say more? The teams have always been so friendly and earnestly desire to get everything situated EXACTLY where you want it!) I highly recommend Smart Move ! You won't be disappointed!

Leclair Moving is the best!!! Used them for a Craig's list buy (big sectional couch) . They got back to me quickly with the best quote to pick up the couch at the sellers, move it to my house (about 15 miles away) and take the old couch away . The best thinks was that they charged a flat fee for the move. Other moving companies had a per hour charge with minimum number of hours (3 hrs). Giving other movers no incentive to finish the job quickly. Leclair was quick, on time , and easy to work with. Thanks for a great experience Leclair. I would use you again.

1. The rate is great. They charge a fair amount and they currently offer deals. 2. As a start up bussiness, they really work hard to earn their reputation. We were given a quote of about 3h working time and they finished the job under 3h30. During this time, they worked non stop, even skipped lunch. 3. They are professional. Some moving companies wouldn't bother wrap up all furnitures, but they took the time to take care of our belongings. I should also mention that they work incredible quiet. I'm sure our neighbors will appreciate it. When they enter the new apartment of ours, they even got a protective carpet ready for high traffic areas. After the work, they took out every piece of trash for us, leaving us a perfectly clean living space. 4. Extras. One thing I'm absolutely thankful for is the wardrobe boxes they provided. My husband and I ended up using four of them. May I add that the ideas of matching outfits assured in a very subtle way for us to be able to recognize our movers with ease. BTW guys, you both looked good in red. -------- My husband and I started moving smaller object and boxes by ourselves before professional movers came in. If you do have a lot of things like us, it may financially be more friendly to you. But other than that, I'm confident in concluding that this moving company definitely took the pressure off of our mind. Their work is nothing short than perfection.

José and his three men team helped us move our 4 bedroom house to another local house. He was always willing to come and discuss our needs and came with more boxes and packing stuff everytime we needed more before the moving day. On the moving day he was very professional and efficient. His team was not as careful all the time but apart from a few scratches here and there nothing was broken or badly damaged. I would recommend white and red moving company and probably use them again.

The team at Wally's was very responsive (jumped on my job with less than 6hrs notice) and tactical about moving my apartment. They took the time to wrap, and protect, all of my belongings before moving them and came well prepared with extra boxes/blankets. Amazing experience. Would use again and am referring friends! Note, they do have a minimum charge.

Chris was great, very efficient getting the job done and I would hire him again. The one note I would suggest to Chris moving forward is to be clear about price and offer a revised estimate once onsite. In my case he quoted $90 for a truck load, I asked if it was the truck in the picture and he simply said a regular truck. He arrived in a truck like the picture. I had a sectional sofa, a chair, small dresser and 4 stacking chairs and at least a standard truck load of debris. In the end Chris charged me $240 which was more than I anticipated but I paid the bill, Chris had done a good job and all my junk was gone. All in, he was at my home 1.5 hrs. After the fact he told me he charged by the truck load. If I had understood that going in I might have purged a few more things!

Renan was a HUGE Help. Moving is at best a very very bad thing to do on a tight schedule. It’s safe to say our move wouldn’t be happening on time without Renan’s help. I only wish he was available on the other end to help unpack... thanks for all the help!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
