If I could select 5 areas instead of just 3 that I liked about Dave, I would! If you have the opportunity to hire Dave, consider yourself lucky. You’ll feel completely at ease that your project will happen on time and on budget with good communication. And having been a builder hiring and managing contractors for some 10 years on and off...this kind of contractor is rare. I first hired Dave to install the 22 windows in my new construction project. That went extremely well. Then I hired him to paint the house. I wasn’t ready as scheduled and he handled it professionally with understanding. We started 2 days later and he hit it hard. Then I hired him to complete the drywall, mud and tape for 1000sf. Those walls are perfectly smooth...no texture...straight corners. Then he tiled a bathroom with 2’ x 6” tiles and adjoining pebble stone mesh tile. IT IS PERFECT. When the last task was taking longer than expected, Dave’s wife and son jumped in and worked until 11pm to finish when promised. As I say, if you’re reading this then count yourself lucky to have happened across Dave.

I flip homes in the North County. I have worked with Carlos for nearly 3 years on a number of custom remodeling projects when flipping homes. He is easy to work with and his guys are skilled. They are not the type of contractors who will rip you off. They work around my budget and Carlos's guys deliver quality work. I'm happy that I found them.

I hired Hyde Handcraft Remodel to assemble IKEA furniture. This included two glass cabinets, bookcase and sofa table. They were on time, efficient and great quality of work. Extremely cost competitive. Very professional and friendly team. I will hire them in the future for remodel work.

My project was a complete renovation of a 1972 built condo. The unit was completely stripped down to the concrete walls, floors and ceilings. All internal partitions were removed. The original floor plan had the access to the small bathroom through the bedroom. The new layout now has a hallway to a large and yes "fabulous" bathroom. The toilet was relocated by the use of a Kohler in wall tank toilet which I really like. Not only does it have separate pee and poo buttons, but the bowl is wall mounted.... no more nasty cleaning around hard to reach floor mounted regular toilets. The kitchen is completely new and was redesigned to take advantage of the space and now feels huge. Since the ceiling is concrete, there were no ceiling lights or ceiling fans. In a non-airconditioned building, ceiling fans make it so nice. The ceilings were furred down about 1 1/2" to incorporate the wiring and and the fan junction boxes. The lights are LED Philips surface mount lights. It looks like there are canned lights (all dimmable) but fit into the 1 1/2" furr down. All of the construction was done with permits from the City of San Diego and Cherl included the condo association on her insurance to make sure that everyone was protected. The cork floors look amazing. Not only are they eco friendly, I'm sure my downstairs neighbor is thrilled too. The sliders were replaced on the balcony so that they stack and open to a huge, connected feeling that makes the condo feel much bigger. The project started June 28th and was completed September 25th. Less that 4 months from stripdown to completion. Considering the difficulties of dealing with high-rise construction and the HOA, Cherl did a great job. Fabulous in both our words!!

Thumbtack introduced Patrick to me within 60 minutes of posting my project (a fireplace renovation). We met early the next day and were so impressed with his knowledge, attitude and availability that we hired him on the spot. Our project began almost immediately and was completed within the week. We showed him a picture of what we were looking for and he and his co-worker replicated it to a "T". We found his work excellent, his attitude positive and wouldn't hesitate to hire him again or to recommend him to others.

We had an outstanding experience with Luke. He is foremost: dependable. He is honest, reliable, ABLE, he knows all things construction and renovation and is able to accomplish the task with fine craftsmanship. He is focused on a quality job. We had issues that arose with our home and Luke was able to tactfully resolve it. We initially hired him to instal bathtubs and float the walls. After meeting Luke, we requested further projects and all was completed with excellent craftsmanship. He did all the necessary permits and paperwork and does everything right. Luke is just what we were looking for and we will certainly call on him for further projects. He is highly recommended and it was a sincere pleasure getting to know him and working with him. Rare gem.

I hired John to do the demo of our guest bath in advance of the renovation. I learned later that John is a full service GC, but when I hired him I had already hired the contractor for the rest of the job. I could not have been happier with the work John did. Here's his report card: (1-5, 5 excellent) Responsiveness/Communication - 5 Value - 5 Cleanliness - 5 Attention to detail - 5 Punctuality - 5 Professional knowledge - 5 Friendliness - 5 I wouldn't hesitate to hire or recommend John for this type of job or something much larger.

I've worked (and continue to work) with Ismael and RCS Pro Build for a variety of projects. His service and expertise run the spectrum from basic plumbing repairs to orchestrating a full luxury home renovation. I've used RCS for the renovation of my own home, and consistently call on RCS for property maintenance at my rental properties. The pricing is fair and transparent. I highly recommend RCS Pro Build for any type of large, medium, or small project.

I hired AP Contracting to do a major renovation on a rental unit. My tenant had lived in this unit for approximately 20 years and the unit was in need of some major work. I called AP Contracting and scheduled an estimate. Anthony showed up on time and we walked the entire unit. I had ideas of what needed to be done and Anthony made some serious suggestions which I also agreed to. I told him that I also had a budget that I needed to stay within. The next day Anthony provided me with a written estimate and a price which was about $3300 less than I had budgeted and this included his additional suggestions, I was impressed. I was more impressed when his crew arrived the next day and the work began. I did a complete renovation, cabinets, carpets, took down the aged popcorn ceiling, painted, replaced the tub and shower, tiled the floors in the bathrooms, painted the entire unit and put in new carpeting. Anthony suggested replacement of the sliding glass doors and a few windows and the replacement of the garage door, which had a broken spring. This entire job took them 13 days start to finish. Now I am not one to do social media reviews but I was asked to review AP Contracting as a former customer. I do not think I am a former customer as I am in the process of having Anthony work on the 4th of my rentals as I write, I have always been one to worry about shady contractors, but I am glad I found AP Contracting and would recommend them to anybody. Zak from Zapara and Sons is fantastic from start to finish! I was very hesitant to allow a new contractor into my PB home in order to remodel our kitchen. My wife had been on me for some time trying to make some changes to our cabinets, and also building a new island for guests. Zak was fantastic right from the beginning. He quickly put my mind at ease with his caring questions and detailed explanation of what needed to be done, materials needed etc.... I could not have had a better experience! It's truly something to find a craftsman who will treat your home like theirs as they do their work. I'm so thankful to Zapara and Sons and will 100% be using them for all our future home remodel and renovation needs!

I'm starting to believe there's nothing Marroquin Construction Corp can't do. Where to begin... they were my general contractor for a major renovation of our 1919 historic home. They've installed exhaust fans, mounted television sets, hung cabinets in the garage, created a beautiful outdoor living space, fixed lath and plaster, repaired electrical, ran network cable throughout the house, replaced light fixtures, re-stuccoed the entire house, poured stamped cement, built an outdoor grill area, ran gas lines to an outdoor fire pit, laid intricate tile for a fountain and shower ... the list goes on and on. Robin Marroquin has been working on my home for 15 years. His employees are neat, prompt, knowledgeable, and polite. You can tell a lot about a contractor by his trucks. They are clean and organized. I would highly recommend this company for ANY of your house repairs/improvements/remodel projects.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
