Just used Larro's for my company's intra-city building move and could not be happier. Ricardo was very helpful and responsive on the front end while planning and they did a great job navigating our various buildings' insurance requirements etc. The moving team arrived right on time and were very professional, communicative, friendly, and helpful. Highly recommend.

Thanks a lot to Santos and Manuel! They work really fast and are very professional and friendly, the whole moving was super smooth thanks to them. They were exactly on time at pick up place and they even drove me to the new place as I do not have a car. Price is great too as they do not have hidden fees, my moving was under 40 miles so was not charged for drive to destination. If you are still looking for the right mover, I strongly recommend Two Friends Movers. I will definitely contact them again in case I need moving services. Thanks.

I hired these guys for a local moving from Sunnyvale to San Francisco. They showed up about on time and did the job pretty efficient. They are friendly, too. But my floor mirror is broken during the move (although Edgar told me it's the first thing broke on him in the past 4 years. I guess it's just my luck?). It could have been 5 stars if nothing was broken.

If I could give Albion Moving 10 stars, I would. They are by far the best movers we've used so far, and we plan on using them in the future as well. They came on time, and got straight into moving our furniture. We have some pretty heavy pieces and all of them got moved without any fuss. Most of our upholstered furniture is also white, making it more challenging to move. We got all furniture delivered to our new home, spotless, and without any dings or other structural damage. Two thumbs up for Albion Moving!

Could not be more impressed with ReloCal Moving! We are complete slackers who chose to move last minute on the weekend. Thankfully they could accommodate and were a treat to work with. Sam was super helpful on the phone. Robert and Jake were great! They gave us a call when they were on the way- showed up on time- and made the moving process a breeze (saying something, we were like half prepared ha!) The guys were hilarious and brightened what would normally be a very stressful experience. They also treated all our very cheap ikea junk like priceless antiques. Those guys work fast too! They were awesome and the move was...dare I say...fun?! Definitely recommending them to any friends looking for awesome movers in the bay. Thanks y'all!

Drew, Jimmy and Penny did an excellent job moving my house. They took very good care of furnitures as well as walls and doors. There were some scheduling conflicts but it all worked out eventually. I would advice you to pick earlier schedule than later in the day, meaning second appointment puts you at risk of first job taking time and more effort for the boys leaving you at risk.

Nicolas was easy to work with, was not only on time, and was friendly. He and his other mover did a great job picking up furniture for me in another city, then brought it to me. They also helped me move furniture around after just moving in a week ago. I would definitely use them again.

Needed a cat door put in my wall to outside of house and just moving in my tools where packed. Got hold of Mike and he came out the next day. I showed him what I wanted and he did the job in an hour and a half. I'm really happy (no more cat box smell) and so are my wife and daughter. Thanks again Mike. Will call you again if I need anything else I don't have time or knowledge for a project.

The team at Wally's was very responsive (jumped on my job with less than 6hrs notice) and tactical about moving my apartment. They took the time to wrap, and protect, all of my belongings before moving them and came well prepared with extra boxes/blankets. Amazing experience. Would use again and am referring friends! Note, they do have a minimum charge.

I had a small moving project that needed to be coordinated like a Swiss watch movement: a very nice antique bookcase (that I just had refinished) and was transporting myself via a uhaul truck on a Friday morning to a destination some 70 miles away, had to be carefully unloaded and moved. More, I also had to get the displaced furniture moved to the garage (a small entertainment unit and small wooden book case) AND get capable people to do it with basically one day’s notice! The pressure was on! I literally posted my request on Thursday at 3:49 am (couldn’t sleep!). Elite Power Washing came to my rescue! They were the first to respond with a very reasonable quote, agreed to an 8:30 am appointment on Friday, and reassured me that they were up for the task. Mike and Juan arrived promptly, took direction on my suggestions on how to transport the piece (after I had watched how my furniture refinisher and his cohort had moved it), and placed it gently in the right spot. Mike and Juan are calm, courteous, considerate, and caring. They are professional, punctual, and take pride in what they do. I will definitely add them to my roster of professionals that I can count on, and will contact them for future jobs. I will assess my gutters and power washing needs as well... Happy and Relieved! I cannot say enough good things about my excellent moving experience with Robert. I recently had to do a big move and trash removal. As you can imagine I was under quite a bit if stress researching moving companies and how to handle the situation. My friends recommend using Muver and brought up Robert's name. With Robert's help all stress went away immediately. His professionalism and attention to detail made everything simple and stress free. I would highly recommend Robert for any type of moving, trash removal, etc. Jobs.

The movers at AmerApex Moving could not have done a better job moving our belongings over 2,000 miles away. The crew was on time, polite, very careful, and kept the move fun and in good spirits. Nothing was damaged and the price did not budge a penny. Thank you again for making my move across country stress free. I will be recommending AmerApex Moving to all my friends and family!

Very nice people, nice company, reliable. Go for it. I went with a dedicated truck option and I don’t regret it. Never used a moving company in the states, only when I move here from France. I highly recommend. Both, they were so charming and helpful, as they transformed a “scary moving” in a smooth operation… Perfect move !

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
