He was on time. Professional and did not over charge. His Waite was excellent and he cleaned up after himself. I have I'm on speed dial. He hung several drapery rods, balanced the washer, hung a TV and over size painting.

Mr Fixit: Stephen and his crew could not have been more capable or professional. From the start, Stephen described what needed to be done to restore/replace baseboards left unfinished by a previous contractor. He and his crew did an amazing job on the baseboards and also threw in a few extra things without charge...caulking around my 2 toilets and painting my dull mantle to match the bright new baseboards. I love my house again and am inspired to have the crew back in the near future. I would highly recommend Mr Fixit for any job.

We had a disaster staining job that Greg rescued. Our prior stainer had talked a big game but couldn't deliver. Greg & his team worked through our inconvenient schedule and did such a good job with the staining that we also hired him for painting. I have a neighbor who was so impressed that he wants Greg to quote on a whole job...inside & out. I really appreciated the fact that Greg did the finishing touches himself. He didn't just send one of his guys to finish & pick up the final check. We will have more work for him in the future & hope you do as well. Oh yeah....Greg & his team all spoke English so there was no communication barrier or talking behind the homeowner's back in Spanish.

LGO got right back to me the same morning I inquired about their services. We picked a date, time and I got a rate for hanging floating book shelves in my bedroom and living room. River, the contractor showed up on time, had the proper tools and equipment and was in and out in less than 45 minutes. Great guy, knew what he was doing and cleaned up after himself too! Will definitely hire them again when I need to.

Project details: Kitchen backsplash using a marble mosaic with a herringbone pattern. Many people (including me before commencing this project) are under the assumption that installing kitchen backsplash is a breeze. I soon realized that installing backsplash can be a very tedious job which sometimes requires someone with a lot of patience and attention to detail, all of which Robin has! At my first meeting with Robin, I was instantly at ease. He is very easy to talk to and was very helpful in suggesting different options in terms of materials to be used. However, we did run into a few hiccups. After inspecting my walls, he soon realized that we could not install the backsplash onto a painted surface. I was very worried that this would bring the cost of the project up, but Robin was able to find a solution very quickly and all to stay within my budget. Other issues arose, however, Robin was always able to quickly resolve them without tearing into my wallet. In addition, Robin was very respectful and mindful of the cleanliness of our home by ensuring that no dust from sanding our walls would escape the confines of his work space (he put up a really cool barrier!). Robin is an honest and hard-working individual who will never compromise the quality of his work and will never cut corners. Robin takes his time to ensure a finished product that is not only done properly, but done to perfection. Robin takes a lot of pride in his work, he is highly professional and an amazing person to work with. To be honest, he's just an amazing person (and funny too!) I will definitely hire Robin again for any future projects. Thank you so much Robin! You couldn't have made me and my family any happier with our new kitchen backsplash!

I had a small exterior job to refresh some aged paint on the soffit and fascia of my home. The project unfortunately coincided with the summer heat but Cisco and his crew carried on like troopers. Everyone from 5 Star Painting was professional throughout the entire project and the finished product was terrific! I am impressed with the company and I highly recommend their services.

Mike is a great guy to deal with. He is responsive and his prices are reasonable. His crew lay new vinyl for our whole house, painted the entire inside and completely gutted two bathrooms and build them back up.

We've hired Allyson for 3 projects...a wall mural, faux wood painting and painting a roller shade. She's amazingly talented. Really. She's also professional, smart and organized. She was upfront about costs and timing. During the design process she had great ideas and sent us drawings until we were satisfied. Allyson is a crazy talented artist. She was able to draw a beautiful mural for our daughters room. Her talents extend to replication too...we had her copy a complicated and detailed image on a roller shade and she nailed it. I wish I had more things to paint because Alyson is terriffic!

Vincent, thank you so much for proving the naysayers in my life wrong by painting/cleaning in the time you estimated it would take. Place looks great and I will certainly contact you again for any future work. Best of luck to you and your family, it was a pleasure working with you. ~ John, Textbooks-Etc.

I hired Ellen to paint a very tall canvas to hang inside the elevator shaft in my home. Because of the subject matter and the trickiness of painting it so as to be visible in the rightway during the elevator cab ride, it was not an easy task. She produced a wonderful result. She spent far more time painting it than her fee might have dictated. She was very intent on making sure we were on the same page at every step. Extremely professional.

Dackery was so responsive and professional. What could have been a cumbersome and drawn out process was so smooth, quick and easy. He showed up right when he said he would and had a plan to execute our design. The end result (baseball wall) was perfect. My son is thrilled and we are so happy. We will refer Dackery to our friends and family.

Jerry painted a 50" wood fence and 6" gate for us. He provided turnkey service, including a day of priming, color-matching and procuring the paint, and doing two days of painting. He was punctual and courteous throughout and the fence looks great. I'll definitely hire Jerry again if needs come up.

This was certainly a wonderful experience! The face painting was amazing, she was a joy to be around and she came up with the greatest games ever! She came in early to set-up and stayed a bit with us afterwards. Our party would not have been the same without her ;-)

Steve did an awesome job painting our entire garage. He was really nice, easy to communicate with, super prompt, and did a stellar job. His pricing was also very fair, and he even patched a big ceiling hole for us that wasn't even in the original scope of the job without charging us. Would recommend without reservation!

This was my first time using Thumbtack and I was very impressed with both Thumbtack and Adam. Adam responded within minutes and met with me the next day to quit the job. He was very knowledgable about what type of paint would work best for the outside gate and how to get rid of the rust and prevent it from returning. Adam's quote was fair and he showed up on the day of the job 10 minutes early and worked for 6 hours until the job was completed. What I was most impressed with was his attention to detail and the care he took for the area as to not get paint anywhere other than where it was intended i.e.: grass, rock walkway, etc. I would recommend Adam and will use him again when painting needs arise.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
