My dog Tristan, a standard poodle, is getting elderly and has arthritis with very bad weakness in his back legs so it has gotten to the point that taking him to a groomer is too hard on him and more dangerous of him getting hurt. I am so thankful I found Desiree who does in-home groom visits where Tristan can be comfortable, not have to stand so long and can now even lay down in the comfort of my home and get groomed. Desiree was on time, she took time to let Tristan warm up to her, she was so gentle and has the experience to gently handle my elderly dog, she cleaned up after, she was so friendly and easy to talk to and Tristan looked wonderful afterwards! She even helped put a name to a possible health problem just from hearing Tristan cough so will ask my vet about it. I am so happy to have found Desiree and she has gained a permanent customer.

I received many responses from my inquiry for a dog trainer on Thumbtack. Kevin was the first to actually call me. We chatted about my needs and concerns and immediately felt I was making the right decision in selecting him. I received so many great tips and my little Lola and I have a better relationship because of it. I now know how to handle certain situations and it's not as big of a deal as I thought it would be. Since my dog is 14 weeks old, I decided to have Kevin come back once a week for 4 weeks so he could assess our progress and help us through the next stage. I would highly recommend Kevin for your dog training needs. Not only is he helping me with training, he's also assessed her food intake, food quality and gave me some additional tips on my crate training efforts.

I can't say enough good things about California Canine. The training is superb and I have no doubt you'd have to travel pretty far to find anything comparable. This trainer is very experienced, amazingly knowledgeable, utterly professional, answering every question I had and providing all the help I needed in order to ensure that my six-year-old German Shepherd rescue dog (and I!) could learn the skills we needed so that this could remain her forever home. What my dog and I have learned in this process is invaluable, and worth every single dollar. I am so grateful that I was fortunate enough to discover this fine and excellent resource.

Darcie is great at what she does and has a wealth of knowledge for dog training. She responds very quickly and is available via phone/text/email to answer any questions once you become her client. Darcie came to our house and assessed our delicate situation with my dog I’ve had for 9 years that has nervous and aggressive tendencies. We just welcomed our newborn baby recently and were needing some serious help with my husband and i getting on the same page for how to better train our dog as, before the baby, she kind of had free reign of the house and training techniques were not established so we needed some help in how to get our dog to follow our directions and live in a safer environment with the new baby now in the picture. Darcie helped us lay down some ground rules and also many techniques to use to help distract the dog from getting nervous and “jealous” when the baby is around me. After our first training session, she sent us an email afterwards reviewing everything we went over so we had some detailed notes to look back on, and also made sure to follow up afterwards on if we had any questions or concerns with the new training techniques she went over with my husband and i. We had one other training session afterwards to review how things were going and also went over some new techniques to assist with getting our dog to maintain her barking when the doorbell is rang/knocked on. We now have some great tools to help manage our situation better thanks to Darcie. Another great thing is she is not “pushy” and works on a customer needs basis so she will not try to “sell” you on getting some type of training package deal, rather schedule her to come train as needed. Thanks so much Darcie for your help and we look forward to touching base with you as time goes on!

We were very pleased with Jenni. She was very informative and gave us plenty of effective advise. She took our unruly puppy for training and 5 weeks later returned to us a very pleasant obedient and enjoyable dog. It is obvious that her main concern is the care of our pets. We are forever grateful. Thank you Jenni.

I went through Tiffany for training my miniature schnauzer Onyx, I was having trouble with Onyx on and off leash. He was very leash reactive when people approached and very stimulated when dogs where around. Tiffany walked me though reading his body language and how to redirect his attention. She was very patient with both Onyx and myself, she took her time to make sure I was comfortable with giving Onyx his commands and helping me with advice for training at home which was great. Onyx has been showing great improvement and we continue to see Tiffany for one on one sessions. I personally recommend training with Tiffany because of her amazing understanding of dog behavior, the use of positive reinforcement, great understanding of obedience training, and also educating owners on continuing working with their dogs at home.

We have a black lab who we got when he was 7 weeks old. When we got him, we were told that he had a mellow personality and that he would be calm. This was not true. Our puppy was a handful, high energy, and out of control. We tried classes, and a trainer, and things did not improve. We found Juniper, and she turned the situation around. She is excellent with dogs and puppies. She was able to provide the right training for our dog, which included positive reinforcement, and proper exercise and diet. Juniper also gave us a lot of pointers about how to interact with our dog. One of our challenges was that our dog had no attention span. Juniper taught us how to do mental training exercises with our dog that enabled him to increase his attention span. And he really enjoyed these too. Theo is still a high energy dog, but he is also obedient and fun to be around. Juniper found a dog park nearby, and we take him every week for a vigorous game of fetch, which he loves. We now live in the house in a more harmonious way and we are very grateful. It took a lot of human and dog social skills to transform our complicated situation into something that works. Juniper has what it takes to understand both your dog and you.

Chris worked our Lab-mix, Zoe, to stop her habit of jumping on people. Chris is professional, observant, and patient. And, most importantly her training is based on kindness. She was able to assess both Zoe's and our particular needs and worked accordingly to help us. Throughout our session Chris took her time not only teaching Zoe, but also teaching us. And, Chris has given us further support through a follow-up e-mail checking on Zoe's progress. With Chris's help we are well on our way to success!

Sherry was very loving to our dog, kind but in control of his behavior, and gave me good tips on how to retrain him in a positive way. I was already doing some of the recommended ideas , but she helped me refine them. Gwen and Wylie the terrier.

    About

I have been training dogs for 55 years. I have trained in most every disciplines. My training is based on not only the dog but also the owners. Your lifestyle and your dog must work together. The breed or mix of breeds also determine your dogs behavior. This combination of factors are essential to that well behaved dog. I don't believe in robot training for your dog and know that you train a Terrier, including pit bulls, different that you train a Poodle. I have had German Shepherds, Smooth Fox Terriers, Manchester Terriers, Whippet, Poodle, Afghan Hounds and Borzoi. I am now an American Kennel Club judge and also judge international shows.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

The dog is very dog reactive. Was able to complete a basic manners class as she is very attentive, but has extreme difficulty on walks if she sees other dogs. Difficult to take her out because of this, but she is very easy to train as far as basic manners. She does get along well with our other dog.
