I had an exceptional situation bringing 2 older dogs from a home with a doggie door to an apartment with no direct access to outdoors where there were numerous encounters with other people & many other pets. My dogs barked constantly at the new environment. With only minimal sessions my “top dog trainer” had the furkids leash trained, pottying outside & tolerant of other people & pets. Beth is a miracle worker in my book!!

I have an English mastiff whom I was reading wrong. So I ran into a girl who knew Paula and swore that she is the best with dogs and she also said Paula brought down the euthanize rate at the local shelters. I was skeptical because I have never had a dog trainer come to work with my dogs. My mastiff was a little different from my other dogs so I was in need of someone who knew what they were doing. When Paula came to meet djanga, the dog was doing her normal barking and showed some of her nervousness. Paula just came to just be around her pursay, and it was just so djanga could see that she's not a threat or anyone to be worried about. Paula has the most open personality and it's like these dogs just feel that vibe and soak it up. Djanga doesn't feel comfortable around most adults but she loved Paula from day two haha. I know that Paula can solve all dogs issues if not strive to give her all trying to. She would come in and we would take djanga out come back in let her chew on an antler to release her tension then go back out. It worked, I thought my dog was a goner. Djanga was getting so much better and Paula would bring different things to introduce her too, ( including her daughter). I bought a super nice leash off of her that djanga worked really well with and a few antlers. Djanga got to where she was looking for her weekly tennis ball in Paula's bag and was super happy to see her. That's not the only good thing though she is very adamant about working the dog and getting them to where they need to be to feel comfortable in their environments and just calm no stress. She did that for djanga and I'm so thankful for that. Djanga today is a better dog then she's ever been I still use her tools to this day and it has made the world so much easier to handle for her. Paula is a great person and the dogs love her but she is very patient and calm with them. Her rates are super affordable, and she will come to you where ever you are. If anyone has the chance to work with her or her work with their dog, it'll be the most wonderful experience you will ever have with a dog trainer. The only thing I would change is I would live to see Paula travel and help dogs around the world I know she could make a difference in our shelters today.

I would highly recommend K.O. Dog Training. The trainers, Philip and Michelle were great to work with. They were prompt to each session and made themselves available in between in case I had questions or concerns. They were very patient with me as a new puppy owner and great with my dog, Teddy. Our sessions are over and they made it clear that they are an available resource to me for the life of my dog. I am very pleased with the progress that Teddy (and I) have made.

I met Mel when I enrolled my 7-month old labradoodle, Daisy, in her puppy training class. I hadn't had a dog in over 10 years and wanted a well-behaved dog as a companion if I am going to keep her for her lifetime. Mel's method is positive training with treats and repetition. Daisy thrived in the 6-week course and did outstanding during her puppy graduation. I then decided to enroll her into Mel's intermediate dog training class because I still had issues with how Daisy acted in public. It's been 3 weeks into the dog training and I can really see Daisy changing into a better behaved dog. She now knows how to heel when walking, stay for long periods, sit at a corner during her walks, stay until I release her to come to continue with our walk, doesn't go ballistic when she sees another dog & owner walking on the other side of the street and lets go of things she picks up during our walks (like rocks, paper, sticks etc) with the "Leave it" command. Mel really takes the time to explain each new step/lesson during each class. And there are no "Bad Dogs" in training, Always Positive. If I have questions between classes, I just email Mel and she always gets back to me to put me back on track. I definitely will be recommending Mel and her dogpanion dog training to my friends. Thanks, Carolyn & Daisy

I bought a dog (german shepherd puppy) from Kris a couple years ago for sport work. He set me up with training and my dog is THE best trained dog I have ever owned. She has a balanced and stable temperament on top of fantastic obedience and protection. I am so incredibly happy with her and Kris is extremely knowledgeable in dog behavior and dog training of all aspects. I recommend Taylor made Working Dogs for any source of dog training or buying.

Sarah is one of the most compassionate and empathetic dog trainers I know. I interned with her to become a dog trainer, myself, but had been training dogs for years prior. Some insights she have me into techniques I had taken for granted were remarkable. Her methods elicit results so quickly. I get real pleasure out of just watching her work and it has made me a better trainer as well. I own and train the Guinness Worls Record surfing dog, Abbie Girl.

Amazing! David was amazing with my dog. I had a dog who had several issues on top of not having any obedience. We tried other trainers before him and they couldn't help him. We finally found David and he did a wonderful job. He got our dog to stop lunging, barking, tearing up our things, helped us build a bond, and taught him obedience commands. I am very grateful for everything he's done.

I hired Mike to help train me and my dog to be able to pass the required tests to become a Therapy team. I loved working with him...Mike makes the training not seem like work but instead fun. Emma (my dog) and I are truly thankful for the wonderful work he did with us. We are enjoying our therapy work as a team :)

I highly recommend Nick for people who are serious about training their dog. We had a wonderful experience while learning a lot and were given the tools to continue training our dog. Nick was professional and we felt comfortable with him right away. He was very experienced and our dog was surprisingly receptive to him. He was understanding of what was important to us and what we wanted to do. He did a great job communicating not just what to do and how to do it, but also why we should do it that way.  That was crucial because training is ongoing and we need to be able to do it on our own. Now that we’ve completed our sessions, my wife and I feel very confident in continuing what we learned and advancing with our dog.

Connie has been great to work with. She really knows her stuff and has worked tirelessly with our been extremely stubborn dog. She spent over an hour in our first meeting going over every issue we wanted to work on and we made a plan to work on each of them. Our dog has made huge improvements in the time she's worked with Connie and I think even more importantly we have learned how to continue working with our dog to get the results we're looking for. I would highly recommend working with Connie.

I’ve avoided hiring a local dog trainer or taking my dog to obedience school because of time and expense. When I learned I could get a 30 minute consultation for just $25, I figured I had nothing to lose. The phone call went far beyond my expectations—Heidi was so helpful. She quickly assessed my dog’s primary behavior patterns based on his breed (hound/terrier/shepherd mix) and suggested types of agility training he would respond to. Then she laid out 3 simple obedience lessons we could work on as a basis for further training. Her advice was simple, clear, and based solely on positive reinforcement. She recommended books to read and types of treats and treat bags to use—I have a full page of notes and am excited to get started. The consultation is SUCH a great value, and Heidi’s friendly, non-judgmental professionalism was exactly what I needed to feel confident that my dog and I will make progress.

I have had the pleasure of working with Bree at Pawsitive Principles with several of my dogs. She has assisted me with private training to work on home based issues as well as group classes. I have utilized her recommendations for a rattlesnake training course for three of my dogs and it was a great life saving experience. I hve also taken her Rally training classes and it is the best training and bonding experience I have had with my dogs. I highly recommend Pawsitive Principles for all types of training as well as dog sport activities. Your four legged friend will also thank you!

I was very pleased with Brandon's service. My 14 year-old dog has had issues with being aggressive toward other dogs her whole life (since I rescued her at a year old). After a few sessions at my local dog park and at my condo complex, she has made a complete turnaround! Brandon showed me it's ever too late to correct a negative behavior. I wish I had known about him sooner! Now he is helping me with basic obedience for my 6 month- old puppy, and I couldn't be happier.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
