They asked thorough questions about the pets and house. This service goes above and beyond pet sitting, with services like plant watering, trash, mail, lights, windows, music/tv for pets. It was great. Plus, I even got 2 texts and pictures per visit while we were on vacation. It's a bit expensive, but comparable when considering a boarding house or similar. Only a few dollars more for the pets to be in the comfort of their own home.

We have had Melinda care for our older and special needs dogs. We feel much more comfortable with her staying at our home so our dogs get undivided 24 hr care. Our dogs require medication on a regular basis and we can count on her to do this without any concern. As our oldest setter is 13, her day to day needs can change and Melinda is aware of this and will make sure she gets the needed help and attention. We would never be able to leave our dogs without this great care. Also, we have asked Melinda to come in the evenings to walk our younger dog. She will also come for a 2-3 hour pet sitting need. She keeps us informed about our dogs and sends pictures. She also does extra things like watering plants, dishes and things we don’t really expect but it sure is nice! I would recommend Melinda, you will have peace of mind when you are away.

We have been using Wendy's pet sitting services since our dog was 4 months old. Duke is our very high energy Weimaraner and he absolutely adores Wendy. We have left Duke with Wendy for several days at a time when we have been out of town and each and every time he leaps out of the car when we get to her house, and even starts to get excited as we drive down the canyon. Wendy is loving, caring, and overall just wonderful with our dog. Duke gets all the exercise, play time, walks and affection that he needs when we are out of town. The best part is when we pick up Duke he is tired and much better behaved than when we dropped him off. We drive from Huntington Beach to Wendy because she is reliable and most importantly we know Duke is in great hands when we are out of town.

Rubi was great! She took care of our fur babies, 2 cats and 2 dogs for an extended weekend. Prices were fair and she spent quality time with all our animals. We received updates with pictures each time she went over and we came home to happy pets and a clean house! Strongly recommend :)

Annie is like the dog whisperer! I have 3 fur babies and they all love her! She comes to my home to visit and let my puppies out to play when I am at work. Besides being trustworthy she is very knowledgable and is always making sure she is looking over your pet for signs of, well, anything. I highly recommend Annie and her bright and cheerful can do attitude. Annie has come to my aid at the drop of a hat ... can't say that about most folks these days but saved me big time! Oakley by the way is avery well behaved dog and a lover to boot! He is also nothing but kind to my dogs. A win win duet! SJ Luke

We rescued what I refer to as a special needs dog. Calle was two years old and everything frightened her. We knew we needed professional help. The first trainer we called couldn’t make a connection with Calle. We then contacted Melissa based on reviews we read online. We were not disappointed! She really considered Calle’s needs and customized a plan to work on walking Calle on a leash, socialization, and potty training. It wasn’t long before we were able to walk Calle in the neighborhood/park. The potty training techniques Melissa shared with us worked immediately! Melissa also met us at various places (shopping centers, park) to work on socialization skills. Melissa’s style is firm, yet so kind and gentle. She also did a great job educating me as a dog owner. In addition to training, Melissa is the (ONLY) person we count on for dog sitting. Even though Calle made enormous progress in the area of training, I wasn’t so sure she would ever be comfortable away from home. I am happy to report I was wrong. She has overnight visits with Melissa about every six weeks and comes home a happy doggie – NO anxiety. I highly recommend Melissa for her outstanding training techniques, knowledge, professionalism, reliability, and last but not least, her obvious love of dogs.

I’m so glad I have found Trina to be my pet sitter. She is very reliable, trustworthy, and professional. I am a nurse and work 12 hour shifts 3 days a week so Trina comes to my house to take my little chihuahua potty, feed her, and keep her company. I know my little fur baby is in good hands while I am away and best of all, I know that I can trust Trina in my home. Not to mention her rates are amazing, especially when I leave on vacation! I always book her to spend the night at my house to pet sit and house sit! So awesome! I would recommend Trina to anyone. You won’t be disappointed!

Our first one-hour session with Brad and Bentley, our 5 lb. Maltese, went very well. Brad was specific about his expected outcomes for Bentley and his masters. We practiced sit, stay, let's go, leave it, and variances of these commands. Brad is easy to work with, and he was gentle when informing the masters about performing a different way. He worked well with Bentley and Bentley was quite tired at the end of the first session. We would definitely recommend Pacific Coast Pet Training--Brad specifically.

Ellen has been so great! My pets liked her immediately and didn't even bark at her. She takes my dog to the park for walks and visits with my cats. She has never missed a visit and she goes above and beyond her duties. If there is an accident, she handles it. She feeds everyone and takes care of the litter and even leaves me a log of what she has done for the day. She took out my trash and brought in my mail while I was gone and she is very trustworthy. I hope to have a long pet sitting relationship with her and our family :)

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

    • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
    • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
      • 45-minute visit: $28.
      • 60-minute visit: $32.
    • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
    • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
      • 12 hours: $100.
      • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32.
