Sam - fixed a ceiling hole, and a storm damaged solid gate and fence. Stayed into the night to get it all finished perfectly. Great guy.

All the work I needed is now done and I couldn't be more thrilled with how it all turned out. Just some comments about Andrew... His patience was SO appreciated, especially when I didn't like the first color on the walls. His perseverance to get the job done the way I wanted even when things were challenging (the paint color, the outside security lights, the ceiling fan and my sliding door). He was very personable and kind as well. He is such a hard worker, easy to communicate and enjoyable to work with! He was also very professional and respectful. Since I am single and some of the work was being done in my bedroom, I always felt safe! That was huge for me! It can be a little unnerving to have a male stranger come into your home and spend several hours. But with Andrew, there were no worries at all and I have told my friends about him. Thank you so much! I will keep him in mind for next time, most certainly! He is a keeper. Now that everything is put back, clean and organized. It looks wonderful and I couldn't be more happy with the end result!

We hired Barry to remodel out kitchen. He did a great job. He was very nice to work with and reasonable on price. He came in on budget and stayed to the schedule. I only hired three companies to do the project. I had the cabinets installed by the cabinet makers and counter top installer that Barry referred me to. Barry did the rest. All of the demo, drywall, tile, electrical, lights, plumbing, baseboards, crown, appliance installs, vents, ducts, backslash, and I am sure more. All of which was completed in 13 DAYS !!!. I recommend Barry for any kitchen or bathroom remodel.

Garrett and his team did a fabulous job installing pressed tin tile on the ceiling of our store (hiding ugly patches); Garrett took a lot of care during the installation, especially with measuring the area where the tile was going to be placed. I really appreciated how thorough and responsible he was from beginning to end. I highly recommend him and his team for any construction job you might have.

Extremely professional - everything to the initial visit to bid to work and cleanup. The work was done well, and in very little time - no delays. The clean up was so incredible, there was absolutely no evidence of work being done. Matched the existing paint perfectly, and refinished the ceiling in the original Santa Fe finish. I would definitely use them again, and would recommend them to others.

I spent six months trying to find an electrician who was willing to file the permits the County requires to install ceiling fans. Other electricians tried to talk me out of it or, worse, wouldn't even respond to my request. Mr. Bowden responded to my Thumbtack request within an hour, had the work down in two days' time, it passed inspection and now I have four legally permitted ceiling fans in my home and they look great. The price he charged me was more than fair for the amount of hours he had to spend at the permit office. The only reason he gets a good and not an excellent rating is that he quoted my friend too high a price for a simple job after I'd brought them to Camps as another potential customer. For myself, however, I will use only Camps for future electrical needs based on customer service alone.

Nathan Sweetin was wonderful to work with. He was prompt, and if running late he always let us know. He did an excellent job raising the ceiling in our entryway and hallway -- having to handle electrical, duct work, drywall, etc. He also took on several other small jobs. Nathan was friendly, professional and provided quality work. We would highly recommend him for big or small jobs.

Rick has completed several projects in my home, both inside and outside. These include structural repair and repairing/replacing drywall, trim replacement and finishing, ceiling fan installation, painting, installation of wood flooring, pulling coax cabling for internet, installing light in attic, adding an electrical outlet, replacing shower control, and replacing a broken drainage pipe outdoors. The quality of Rick’s work is excellent. His estimates are generally very accurate. Any deviation is explained, usually offering alternatives to the way the work can be completed possible. Rick will offer suggestions and sometimes indicate that doing a particular task is not really necessary or is too expensive for the return. His habits are very neat and pride in his work is evident. He is congenial, hard working, and a pleasure to have working in the home.

Kitchen remodel and other repairs and improvements: After ordering a Home Depot Quartz countertop and backsplash we hired Anthony to take out the old tile countertop and tile backsplash. He replaced the drywall, sink, disposal and pipe. In the kitchen he added additional electrical outlets, replaced the ceiling light and installed a dimmer, installed under cabinet lighting and a timer for our outdoor pole light. Anthony is a hard worker, trustworthy, reliable, friendly, honest and affordable. He communicated well. He also replaced our rusty patio gutter and downspout and replaced clapboard, fascia and flashing as needed. He drained our water heater and installed a sediment filter for all incoming City water. We will use him again in the future and will recommend him to anyone.

We had to have electrical pulled in and boxes installed for installation of ceiling fans including the installation of the fans in 3 rooms. Also we found the thermostat controlled gable fan wasn't working correctly so had to repair and adjust that. Work quality was excellent and on time as promised and costs were as promised as well. We look forward to having them back in the near future. We would highly recommend them to anyone.

This was the first time we have purchased a home that needed a "face lift", being a foreclosure we weren't really sure where to start. After a very informative initial meeting to discuss the best way to get "more bang" for the buck, we signed a contract and the renovations began. Nick Bossio & his team created a very beautiful "open concept" kitchen/family room area. the ceiling was floated, 7 can lights with dimmers were installed, granite counter tops were installed along with a granite composite sink. The back splash really made the difference between standard every day & outstanding. Nick went the extra mile to design a beautiful glass subway tile wall including complete tile around the kitchen sink which overlooks the pool in the backyard. The laminate floors turned out amazing, we chose a beautiful "hand scraped" chestnut brown that is durable and classic. I recommend Solid General Construction for any job big or small, his team is professional, friendly and seems to really care that the homeowner is satisfied, and above all shows great pride in his workmanship.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
