I hired Mark to remove a large tree stump in my front yard. I also asked him to remove the many tree roots that had come to surface. Mark is professional and above all gave me a great price to remove everything! I highly recommend Mark!

These guys were amazing. They had a large yard clean-up (about 1/4 acre). In 3 hours they finished all the pruning of a couple of very large trees, cut down a dead tree and clean up my whole hillside. Great job, excellent communication on what was going to be done. Quality perfect and great cleanup (even the pool). Will have them back again for sure.

Louis and Colin did a great job installing two ceiling fans in my home. There was no existing light in either room and it took him about 2.5 hours to go through the attic, do the wiring, cut the holes and instal the fans. They left the rooms spotless and were very friendly. The price he charged was very reasonable and I will definitely use Louis again for any electrical needs.

John initially came over to fix my broken valves and do some minor maintenance to the sprinkler system. What I thought was going to be an easy fix turned out to be a new homeowner's nightmare. I ended up having broken lines under my concrete, huge tree roots blocking pipes, and even a tree branch that fell and tried to brain John and his workers. John was an absolute trooper and dedicated his time to fix everything and work around all of the issues. It turned out to be a rather expensive job, but considering the hiccups that happened, I'm very happy. Everything is working, the timer is installed, and the pipes are flowing. I highly recommend John for all of your sprinkler needs.

This business checked out okay with the California State License Board. They also came in with the lowest bid! My husband and I were extremely impressed with the young gentleman Balter D. Moreira and his crew. We needed an old birch tree cut down, in our back yard, that was right up against the fence. I always felt that these guys had everything under control! They worked fast and efficiently. They cleaned up so well afterwards too! I will recommend De La Cruz Tree Service to all my family and friends.

Dave contacted me right away. Told me he would beat any other quote which he did. Dave and his team showed up on time and finished 2 hrs earlier than expected. Did a great job taking out our walnut tree and being very careful of the surroundings. Even gave us the option of keeping any of the wood from the tree. They cut and stacked and cleaned up and ground our stump. Looks awesome would hire him for any other work that we need in the future. Thank you DLB Tree Service. Michael

Called Lee for a quote and he sent someone out the next day! My front and back yard was a mess and the the quote they gave was $200 less then the other 2 businesses that had come and given me a quote. That afternoon they sent their workers and did my front and back yard bushes and grass. It looked amazing! I wish I had a before and after picture! I hired them to come every other week and they are more then affordable and do an amazing job! The workers along with the owner Lee are super friendly and polite! I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a affordable lawn service that does incredible work!!

We were very pleased with the great work, tree trimming and shaping done on our tree, that Justin and Rick did for us. They were very efficient and hardworking, and cleaned up after their work very nicely. They also are referring some associates for us for other home jobs that need to be done. We recommend them with high marks. Thanks, Justin and Rick!

My back lawn was overgrown with tall grass & weeds plus tall weeds / grass covered some river rock areas & a small flat porch. Luis did a good job of getting the lawn & tall weed areas fixed & leaves removed from the ground under a couple of trees.

It is nice to do business with a company that has integrity to mwtch their skills. Starting with Diane as my 1st contact, she saw to it the appointment was set and the team identified. When the guys came out to assess the job, Jon offered me a number of options on the tree-trimming I needed done. Then, when I chose my option, Diane was again there to explain the jobs and each option as well as to assure I got the best price. The day of my appointment was good in that the guys did what they could but it turned out that I needed more (my tree was basically dead & needed removal) Jon explained the problem and then Diane recommended other companies that had the necessary equipment to remove such a huge tree and to "prepare me" for the possible sticker shock for removal of a tree that size. She had vetted the companies for me, having worked with all of those she recommended. I appreciated the company that exceeded my expectations for fairness and quality of work. They went above & beyond to assure I'd get the best tree care at the best price. They can't have stayed around so long (>30 yrs!) with shoddy work and questionable business practices. I am glad I called them.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
