Both movers were very nice & worked efficiently to move furniture to apartment down the hall in 2.5 hours. However there was an initial phone miscommunication with the owner re the additional base rate which was $95 and not $40.

They were very responsive and pro-active. We managed to move my timeline up a few hours in the day, which helped a ton. Miguel and Jorge were very polite. I had a small move, but many flights of stairs to go up and down, and these guys were trooper. Would definitely hire them again if I need movers.

Scott Leads a great team of professional movers. They are experienced and really take good care of your stuff. It was generally happy working with them in our first moving. Note that they charge $30 extra for packing and double hour rate for the time spent on the road.

Andre and Andrew were outstanding. They were packing magicians that made my move so much better. They were incredibly friendly and meticulously packed my furniture with care. I kind of underestimated the stuff I had to move and they worked a miracle to fit in all in the truck all carefully packed. I would use them again in a second and would request Andrew and Andre. They are great and by far the friendliest and nicest movers I've had a chance to work with. 5* all the way!!!!! Thanks for all your hard work today!!

Thank you A2B They in fact were very understanding and suggested me ways by which I could bring down my cost of moving. On my move day the movers came right on time and started working immediately, packing carefully and loading the stuff on the truck. They finished everything within a few hours. Delivery was a week later with everything intact. The delivery team were great helping me staging everything in my new place reassembled my bed and all. This is not the first time I have moved to a new place but one thing I can say for sure is this was the most coordinated and peaceful shifting I have ever done. Thank you A2B Moving Company, you are the best.

The guys were all great! Showed up on time, moved ALL my stuff so quickly and safely. I’ve used other movers before and it seemed like every piece of furniture was damaged but not today! Moved all my heavy objects without issue and even assembled the bed frame without me asking so by the time they left everything was where I needed it. Would definitely recommend them and use them again!

I had a very good experience with SVLM. Everything was packed so professional and careful. Three movers load my all my stuff from two bedroom apartment pretty fast. The elevator was slow, but they used large boxes-speedpacks to bring several items in one trip. I actually, didn't meet as clean truck as they had. They even take away my unwanted old couch. So, I satisfied with move at all. And will recommend SVLM to all my friends.

Had a impressive experience with My Move. First, the sales Rep. Richard is very responsive and responsible. His quote is fair and reasonable, lower than many other movers. For moving your stuff, you don't want to go for the extremely low quote as some of your personal memories simply cannot be replaced. Richard also went beyond and forward to respond my follow-up emails during and after the move. It's quite nice to have him acting as a "case manager", I appreciate this personal touch. Their moving team is also efficient and detail-oriented. They disassemble and assemble our furnitures with care. The moving went pleasant and smoothly. No water damage, no boxes broke. Totally 5 star!

Jose and another guy helped me move. Communication before and after the service was very easy. They showed up on time and took good care of my stuff. The only reason I didn't give a 5 star is that with two movers the job took 8.5 hours.

Main Movers arrived about 15 minutes into the 2 hour arrival window we had scheduled. They brought good padding to cover and protect our furniture. They were fast, careful, and very professional. They billed us exactly as they said we would. Overall, everything was excellent, and we recommend them highly to everyone else.

We were thrilled with M.P. Movers. Marquis Philip was responsive to messages, showed up on time, moved things from one place and Ikea to our home 1-1/2 hours away and assembled an Ikea day bed. He is reliable, a hard worker and a very nice guy. He did an excellent job. We would hire him again, and will refer him to others.

I've used a lot of different moving services before and Clutter is easily the best. The movers showed up at the very start of their arrival window, which prevented me from waiting around. They sent a group of 3 movers and each of them were courteous, professional, and hard working (no waiting around or wasting time). They brought all the equipment they needed, plus extra boxes, bubble wrap, and packing paper for fragile items, which was very convenient and helped prevent me from running back to the store to get more of these supplies. Even before the movers got there, the customer service over the phone was excellent and their use of text messaging updates gave me a lot of peace of mind. Their "down to the minute" pro-rated billing felt very fair. I'll only be using and recommending Clutter for moving after this experience.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
