How much does it cost to get a piano tuned?

Request quotes from several piano turners in your area for a more accurate cost estimate.

Should you tip piano tuners?

Tipping piano tuners isn’t customary. If you had a great experience with a piano tuner, you can also show your appreciation by leaving a review on Thumbtack.

What happens if you don't tune a piano?

Tunings can help prevent damage and maintain your piano. When you tune your piano, you’re correcting its pitch. So if you go too long without tuning your piano, the pitch will likely drop — which can add tension to your piano’s structure, according to the Piano Technicians Guild.

Is piano tuning hard?

Tuning a piano can be difficult if you haven’t done it before and don’t have the correct tools. For example, you’ll need a piano tuning lever, tips, electronic chromatic tuner and mutes. If you don’t have the tools or experience, you might be better off hiring a professional to tune your piano.

How long does piano tuning take?

Tuning your piano might take a few hours or less. Before your appointment, ask your piano tuner how long the process will take.

Is it worth tuning an old piano?

It may be worth tuning your old piano, especially if it’s highly valued or has sentimental value. Bring your piano to an expert piano tuner. They can assess your instrument and help you determine if it can be restored.

Can a piano be too old to tune?

Many old pianos can be tuned. Consult a professional piano tuner to find out if they can tune your piano.

Why do my piano keys squeak?

If your piano keys are squeaking, it may be because something is stuck between the keys. Or, your piano may be dirty. You may be able to fix your keys. If not, hire a professional to take a look at the problem and perform the repairs.

Can a piano be tuned after 20 years?

If you haven’t tuned your piano in 20 years, you can still bring it to a tuner for them to assess and perform a pitch raise.

How often should you tune a piano?

Some experts recommend tuning your piano at least two or four times a year, according to the Piano Technicians Guild. You should always see what the manufacturer recommends for your specific piano. And you should schedule additional tunings as needed.

We managed to schedule James for Sunday, Sep 23rd at 8:30 AM. At 6:39 AM that day, he cancelled due to a family emergency and we rescheduled for a week later. He tuned the piano and it sounds good, but two of the strings broke and he didn't have replacements on hand. We tried to rescheduled on Oct 3rd, but he was out of town until the 24th. We asked him for a new date on the 25th, and he said he'd get back to us that week; he never did. We asked again on Nov 5th (no answer) and again Nov 7th; he said he would be out of town until the 22nd. We rescheduled for the morning of Mon 25th at 8:30 AM. I had to work, so my visiting parents stayed home to wait for him. He never showed up, didn't give notice, and didn't respond to queries until 2:45 PM, when he explained that he'd left his phone at home. James seems like a good piano tuner (as far as my novice ears can tell), but the scheduling has been awful. We've been as patient and accommodating as we can be, but we've reached our limit. We're now looking for another piano tuner to finish the job.
