Frank R. says, "Amanda is an amazing dance instructor. I have been working with her for a few months, and I cannot believe how much I have learned. Ballroom dancing is way outside of my comfort zone. I am more of the martial arts, hiking, snow skiing type, but I have admired the skill & elegance of ballroom dancing for years. I particularly enjoyed some of the Tango dancing that I would see in action movies occasionally. Finally, a friend of mine suggested that I take the big step and start lessons. Amanda has been great at translating the required dance movements into terms that I understand from decades of martial arts. There are a lot of similarities in movement and balance, but the emphasis & timing are dramatically different. Amanda has a great depth of knowledge and experience in ballroom dancing and the gift of being able to transfer that knowledge to her students. I highly recommend Amanda as a ballroom dance instructor."See more

Henna P. says, "We took dance lessons from Alpa for our first dance at our wedding reception. She choreographed the whole thing and even asked us for our input and offered to let us change things based on comfort and preference. She did a great job though and me being the control freak that I am, I'm surprised that I didn't have a single change request! Let me stress that neither one of us are dancers and I was very worried about doing the dance in front of so many of our friends and family. But Alpa was so patient with us and made us feel so comfortable. We feel like we've known her for years yet we just met her a couple weeks ago! We learned the dance in two lessons and we will be back for our final lesson next week just to practice in front of her with my 25 lb lehenga and heels. If you need dance lessons of any kind, she is your girl! Thank you, Alpa! We are so thrilled that you will be a part of our big day in such a big way."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios donโ€™t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move โ€” and sweat โ€” in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the studentโ€™s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.
