I have a home in Huntington Beach that had an existing furnace and ductwork. I wanted to install AC utilizing the existing system. I consulted with several HVAC contractors and received quotes. Mina was the most knowledgeable of the group of contractors, provided the best suggestions, and also had a very competitive price. During the installation the ductwork turned out to be in poor condition. Mina replaced the ductwork and only charged me the cost of material and not the labor. For anyone who has done contracting this in unheard of. Change orders are often outrageously priced. Mina is an honest man who does good work and cares about satisfaction with the job. If you have the opportunity to use Mina I highly recommend him. The system has been installed and running for 1 month and all continues to work great. Thank you Mina.

The saying you get what you pay for really means something with contractors. These are the first guys who have left my house and I have nothing to complain about! Great company! They show up on time. They do quality work and they layout a variety of options for you. They spend time talking to you so you know what your issue is and what you can do to fix the problem or how to move to upgrade which was what I choose to do. Couldn’t be happier. Love my new air conditioner. When I need a new water heater I know who to call. Not the cheapest not even the most expensive and they give you options to work out payments if needed. There is a reason they are highly rated.

I wish all contractors were as responsive as Air-O-Stat. I had a small flood that blew out two furnaces. When I called that sent a tech out the next day and gave me a specific time for the appointment (rather than the normal some time between 12 and 5) and he was on time! They fully explained what was wrong and went to get replacement circuit boars and installed them immediately. I was a difficult issue to deal with since all the functioning parts of the furnaces had been under water but the fixed it quickly and were a delight to deal with. Will definitely use them exclusively in the future.

Wow, I've worked with a few HVAC companies before but this one is second to none. I hired them for routine maintenance for both of our units. One of the owners, Mark, was very responsive and reasonable over chat with Thumbtack and the phone when scheduling. Chip, one of the maintenance guys, was on time, courteous, and thorough! After a couple of hours of doing a full check up and tune up ok the system, he went over everything he looked at and called out a couple of things to take note of. No pressure to buy anything but did simply offer an annual maintenance plan that we signed up for. I wouldn't have done this if I hadn't been impressed with the whole experience.

I originally hired a different technician to come fix a leak coming from the emergency drain line on my HVAC. They made three trips here and couldn't fix the problem. They told me I'd need to completely reinstall my five year old HVAC. Then I had Andrey come out, and he was able to flush the line and have it working like new within an hour. A+ quality work. Thanks, Andrey!

Fantastic company. Simon is polite, communicative, and friendly. They did a great job installing a new central air system for me in my condo and gave me the most competitive price I've found. I'm very happy with this company - it's extremely difficult to find honest and reputable contractors nowadays, but HUS is definitely one you should add to your contacts.

Tom was fast, efficient, friendly and made sure to explain things as we went. We're keeping his card for future issues as he does HVAC and electrical. He also had all of the tools he needed as well as a replacement for the blown up part that we didn't even know we needed available. A great experience!

When my air conditioning system stopped working, I feared that a technician would tell me that it couldn't be fixed because it was too old. But I called Laith Frangoul of Honesty Cooling & Heating and much to my delight he really was exactly what his company name touts - HONEST! He arrived very quickly, found a bad condenser, had it in his vehicle and we were up and running in minutes at a very fair price! I was so thrilled that I hired him to do some preventative maintenance. He uses top notch modern equipment and he is obviously very knowledgeable. I own a commercial building and I plan to use him when we have HVAC issues. I am thrilled to have found Honesty Cooling & Heating and I highly recommend his services. The HVAC service industry is loaded with crooks and thankfully he is the exception!

My experience with Velavi, from removal of floor furnace to completed installation of furnace, AC, and duct work, was fabulous. There might be other companies that are equally as good, but I doubt you could find one that is better. The installation passed all tests by an independent contractor with flying colors. Our city building inspector was impressed by the quality of work. Get a quote. You won't regret it. The only problem I had was with Thumbtack. I was curious about their service, so I signed up as a customer. I already had requested four quotes based on Yelp reviews and decided to add one from Thumbtack. I was soon getting emails from five companies other than Velavi. Then I started getting update emails from Thumbtack on the status of the project. I ignored all the emails until the installation was done. At which time I was asked to write a review. They listed five companies to select from. Velavi was not one of the five choices I was given, so I looked for an option to unsubscribe. None. Now I am feeling like I do when phone solicitors keep calling me multiple times... "irrigated"... Thumbtack, if you are reading this, please unsubscribe me. Do yourself a favor. Give other dissatisfied customers the option of terminating the unwanted emails.

Power surges suck! Just the other day a car crashes into a power pole around the corner from where I live and the resulting surge from the exploding transformer burned through every charger and clock I had plugged directly into the wall as well as my fridge, oven and washer. I decided to give OC Appliance Masters a call and make an appointment for him to check things out the next day. I get a nice two hour window vs the 4 hour window that I've been accustomed to from previous experiences with professional service guys for fixing HVAC, electric, plumbing, cable etc. I spoke to Nick and he says he can call an hour or half an hour before the arrival time. Another plus. I was going to be home all day so I was okay with the half hour heads up call. On the day of the service Nick calls me earlier than expected and says he was able to finish his earlier appointment and if I'm available he can come earlier. I'm all for that! Who enjoys biding their time waiting for a service person? Not me. The sooner the better plus my fridge wasn't getting any cooler. When he arrives, he was a whirling dervish of information regarding possible culprits for what could be ailing my appliances and is listing them out as he's working on my fridge. He tells me he was a electrical engineer and will find out what the problem is. It turned out it was the controller board and he was able to give me an estimate immediately without saying he'd have to check the price for the part etc. This was a nice change from the other guys I've dealt with that don't say a word and have to crunch the numbers. What it told me was that he had experience with this issue before. He also had the part on hand and could get the unit back and running in no time. I was sold. After that, he also serviced the fridge's coils, at no extra charge, which were cluttered up with years of cat fur which he was shocked at seeing as he opened up my fridge's service panel. The next item he looked at was my stove/oven. Given what he saw with my fridge, his prognosis even before opening the stove/oven was that it would be expensive and I could be better off looking for a new oven but we'll look anyway. Turns out he was right. The digital display panel and control board were shot and would cost $700 if I wanted to have it fixed. Thank you for your honesty. Finally the dishwasher. Lo and behold, same problem as the others, burned out control board. Good news was that it was more reasonable to fix and wasn't going to cost as much as a new unit. Bad news was he didn't have the part on hand but we arranged for him to get the part and return to fix it later next week. The biggest take away from him during the service call was the preventative advice from Nick. Place ALL your expensive appliances on a SURGE PROTECTOR from now on. This is the first time anything like this has ever happened to me and this includes even when I was living in Denver and we would have some nasty thunderstorms that would cause power fluctuations like nobody's business so it never occurred to me to put anything except my computer and entertainment system on a nice surge protector. That's all changed now. All in all, it's hard finding a trustworthy appliance repair person. I read some of the positive reviews as well as the negative reviews of the well reviewed appliance service techs for the area and decided to take a chance with OC Masters and I'm very pleased with the results. I'm also glad that I'm dealing with a family owned and operated business since Nick and his brother are the guys who are doing all the work. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I loved working with Hyeco Air. They came to my house to move the HVAC Furnace from my garage to the attic. Many company's said it could not be done off the bat (maybe it was too much work for them and they wanted quick money.) Assurance: Hyeco Air came to my house, assessed th e job and assured me that the job could be done. Efficiency: He was highly efficient as it took him just 1 day to disconnect everything from the garage, move it to the attic and reconnect everything back. A job that takes some company's a couple days. Professionalism: Hyeco Air was punctual and professional. He provided astute input on how the process would be, and his recommendations. Value: I am a firm believer of paying for good work. I had no doubt that Hyeco's work was going to be anything less. His price was great for my budget.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.

How much does it cost to have your furnace serviced?

When your furnace isn’t regularly serviced it can operate less efficiently. This increases your energy bills and also prevents your furnace from keeping your home as warm as you like. Keep your furnace properly maintained with regular service. The national average furnace service cost is between $60 and $80. Companies may offer tuneup specials that cover all the necessary testing, tightening, measuring and cleaning to keep your equipment running at top efficiency. If you have a newer system, furnace service costs may be covered by your warranty. Outside of warranty, a basic tuneup might start at $58 and a more advanced maintenance cleaning could be over $120. Here are some signs your furnace may need service:

  • The furnace has stopped functioning entirely.
  • The temperature cannot be regulated.
  • Rooms in the home are either too hot or too cold.
  • The heated air coming from the furnace smells like gas.
  • The thermostat isn’t working.
  • Strange noises are coming from the furnace.
