We now have wonderful under cabinet lighting. He also changed our some other plugs and light switches for us. Andres is knowledgeable and polite. We will definitely call on him again.

My 1300 sq ft deck refinish did not go well. They did a lot of work to power wash and prep the deck, but it just wasn't a complete job. Areas of old, worn-out finish remained over most of the deck. The new finish was applied and puddled over these areas and either formed dark, shiny areas, or just skinned over and refused to dry after more than a week. The lifetime of the finish in these areas will likely be poor. In addition, as a first "trim" operation they applied finish to the inch or so on either side of the gap between boards, then they applied finish over the boards with a roller. Unfortunately, this ended up looking pretty bad on most boards in the deck, with the edges of the boards being dark/shiny/sticky and the middle being light. Finally, some agreed upon board repair work was not done. My wife gave him the final check while I was at work so I didn't have a chance for a final inspection. My mistake. This was in no way a professional quality job. It's hard to imagine that Big League didn't know this was a mess when they finished, and they have not responded to my contact attempts to see what can be done to make this right.

Victor remodeled the kitchen in my rental in Milpitas. New cabinets, paint and fixed the plumbing. He also installed a new vanity in the bathroom. He finished the job in two weeks just as he said it would be completed. I had no problem giving him the key to the house, he is very honest and trustful.

Paul did an impeccable job turning my old-basic condo bathroom to a more contemporary and like “new again”. I knew the minute we chatted on the phone he was the angel I needed with my 2 days deadline. He helped accomplished bathroom project: added new shower door (oppose to curtain), replaced wash sink, added vanity cabinet, replaced medicine cabinet, replaced bathroom lights fixture and LED lights, replaced toilet seat and painted bathroom. The amazing part, while he also helped lots with door and window paint touch- ups and blind installation, he did all in 2 half (not full) days with neat-clean work, quality results. After racking my brains whom to rescue my last minute project, I was truly saved and can’t ask for a better handy pro-helper my last minute project. So from here on, its Paul to the rescue… Thank you Paul! You deserve more than 5 stars.. (its 7+ on my book) Jules

Roland has been absolutely outstanding! He did an amazing job refinishing the banisters for our stairs and all the oak cabinetry and drawers in our kitchen. But that was just the start! Roland is very talented and proceeded to help us out with a number of other projects to improve and update our home before we put it out on the market. He also refinished an antique standup piano (built in 1904) to practically new showroom condition for a very reasonable price - we had almost given the piano away for free! Now it will stay in our family for many, many generations. Roland also helped to restore our master bathroom to virtually new - he cleaned and regrouted all the tile - the original estimate to tear down the shower and rebuild it from scratch was more than $16,000 - so Roland helped save us a huge amount of money - now our master bathroom looks like it was remodeled (we put in new bathroom fixtures and lighting) without the huge cost - all thanks to Roland! He also fixed some broken closet shelves - and rebuilt them the correct way. Finding Roland turned out to be one of our greatest advantages - he was also very punctual and dependable - and totally honest. He's also just a really, really nice guy! You cannot go wrong hiring Roland to help you out on your home projects - large or small. Roland also let us know he is now getting into restoring the upholstery on any kind of furniture - something we did not take advantage of - but if we had needed something like that, we would have hired him in a second!

Kirk did a high quality job installing our pre-ordered cabinets. We later hired him to install the baseboard and stair posts/rail. He gets the work done in a timely manner to keep our remodel schedule moving. He didn't have an issue with coming back several time to finish up custom trim work. The pictures below show the kitchen cabinets and the new stairs.

Hector was my sub contractor for a custom closet and bench. Built piece by piece from his workshop, primed, painted with oil protection, the finished product was a work of art.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

  • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
  • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
  • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
  • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?

How much does it cost to refinish kitchen cabinets?

Cabinet refinishing revives dull or dinged-up doors and drawers. The cost of cabinet refinishing will vary based on factors such as the number of linear feet of cabinetry you have, the amount of nicks and scratches that need repair, the level of detail on your cabinets, and more. The pros typically will remove the cabinet doors and then sand or strip them down to create a beautifully smooth new surface. After prepping the surface with primer as needed, the pros may then repaint or stain the doors to give them a new lease on life. Cabinets with intricate detail or extensive surface damage will likely cost more to refinish, as they will take more time and effort. Keep in mind that you should only elect to do cabinet refinishing if the cabinet boxes are structurally sound and you plan to keep your current kitchen layout for a number of years. The investment will be wasted if the cabinet boxes are in disrepair and will need replacement soon, or if you’re planning a remodel in two years. The national average price range for cabinet refinishing is between $1,500 and $6,000.
