Dave is more than outstanding. Not only is he professional, he can also think on this feet to resolve a very difficult door issues that we had for a long time. We live in a high end home and had 2 contractors work on the problem Each improved the situation slightly but the cause of the problem was never truly understood until Dave came along. One reputable door company even tried to sell me a new door. Initially, I was extremely wary of using someone from Thumbtack as there was no way to check credentials and bona fide references. Dave has certainly surprised us on the upside. He is cost conscious for his clients and does not recommend a more expensive solution if a cheaper one can be had. I watched Dave work the entire 2 hours he was here. He spent a great deal of time troubleshooting and then came up with a game plan that we both agreed would be ideal. He's a hard worker and an intelligent one at that. In the future, I will call on Dave to do maintenance work on our home without the slightest reservation. Ting P.

Arisel handled a small hardwood repair job in our kitchen. First I'm grateful that he offered his services. Many contractors only bid big jobs. Second he followed on his commitments to me, being on time and following up the next day with a touch up. I did not have to follow up. He was good to work with. Third I think he did an excellent job with the conditions he had to deal with. I recommend him.

I've literally communicated with or contacted at least five contractors over the past two months to complete this flooring job. Salinas was an answer to prayer! Whereas other sites or contractors told me to wait and/or never got back to me or took others jobs, Vyron responded promptly within an hour when I posted the job on Thumbtack. Vyron and Pablo did excellent work putting down a new subfloor and plywood, then installing an LVP (see photos) and a new toilet (not pictured). Vyron communicated about every step of repair and installation and about every purchase for the job. He takes pride in his work and left the work area clean. I'm so glad that the job is finished and that it was done well.

Gleo assisted with multiple projects to prep my home for sale. With little over 2 weeks to get repairs and enhancements completed, Gleo responded in a timely manner and dropped by to assess the job. I own an older condo with pretty outdated systems - doorbell mechanism, ceiling fan/light remote fixtures and AC. Thus, it was challenging trying to find out how things were connected and installed and where they were located. Gleo had to do a lot of extra research and testing to find the source of the issues. He accomplished this all through diligence, skill and the desire to do a good job. I was very pleased with the results stemming from the repairs he made. From start to finish, Gleo gave me the full confidence that he would go above and beyond to get the job done. His pricing for services are beyond fair despite the fact that spent multiple evenings and hours to perfect and fulfill the required services. Not only will you find a skilled, professional contractor but a fair, good-natured individual with a heart of gold. Thank you, Gleo!!!

I hired Gusanito to install porcelain tiles in my bathroom. He was very prompt--being the first contractor to contact me on thumbtack--and quickly responded to my text messages whenever I had a question. He takes his time and is very detailed in his work. He is also willing to help you with other problems. For example, in addition to installing the tiles, I also wanted to change my sink faucet and shower handles. He agreed to do the extra work at a reasonable price. The tile installation went smoothly, however, we ran into plumbing issues which he couldn't solve. I'm giving him four stars because I hired him on thumbtack for tile installation services, not plumbing. Nonetheless, he agreed to bring his cousin (who is an experienced plumber) over the next day to change my sink faucet at no extra cost. The total work took about two full days to complete, but I'm sure it would have been less if we didn't run into the plumbing issues. So I recommend him but make sure you talk with him thoroughly about what you want to accomplish.

Andres was FANTASTIC! He responded to a small job we posted during a kitchen renovation for a complicated appliance install. I couldn't find anyone who could do it. He showed up ready to do whatever it took. He offered great input in helping us make decisions, always said it was no problem to make it happen, and got right to work. He had all the tools necessary to get the job done. He was clean and courteous. His wife worked with him and she was quiet and clean as well. We ended up giving him almost 3 days of work and he far exceeded the work we had previously done (he stained our wood counter tops). We will be hiring him for all our handyman/construction needs in the future. We highly recommend him.

Dinh did an excellent job installing a new Bradford White heater. He had the best price for the heater and installation of the three contractors I contacted. He is apparently a pretty busy guy, so it is best to follow up on him to keep things rolling along. I will recommend him to my friends.

We first met their team when a salesman cold-called us. It took us a while to make a decision about what we wanted to do, but once my wife and I decided to move forward, working with Shmuel and his team was excellent. I can't say enough good about them. The project involved removing a bathroom, adding a bathroom, removing and remodeling a kitchen, adding hardwood floors, adding a gas line, upgrading an electrical box, moving HVAC ducts, wiring and hanging a chandelier, tile for a fireplace and mantle, and painting. There were structural walls that needed to be modified. They promised to get the job done in six weeks, in time for an important family gathering we had planned. We were skeptical, but bet on them, and they came through. In any project of this size, there will be unforeseen issues that come up. In all of those cases, Shmuel was excellent to work with. Some examples are: - Once we saw the lighting in the new kitchen, we wanted an extra light over the sink. He tore-up some of his work and added it and charged us for the hardware only. - We wanted a cabinet added by our front door and another by our laundry room. He added it to the work without question, and charged only for the hardware. - We decided we wanted to replace the stair railing. He helped us find bids from railing experts, and charged us the bid without any contractor markup. The extra work disrupted his planned work schedule, but he worked around it to make sure we were still done on time. - The vent over the kitchen range appeared too low to us, even though it was within code. He replaced and installed the cabinet with something smaller. No charge. - With all the demolition, he accidentally lost our Nest thermostat. When this was realized, without any questions or me having to ask, he apologized and picked-up a new one, at his cost. Some other examples of the excellent service: - Shmuel and Shalhevet helped us pick paint colors and pick kitchen appliances and cabinet styles, traveling to a number of stores with us. My understanding is that most contractors would just tell you to pick something and leave you to figure out the details. - They allowed us to live in our home during construction. At the end of each day, they spent time blocking-off areas and moving equipment (as required by code) to make the site safe for our children. He could have easily just insisted we spend a month in a hotel. - All the little things. For example, we never discussed replacing the flooring HVAC vent covers; he bought beautiful new ones that matched the wood floors we chose. We never discussed replacing outlet faces, but he felt it wasn't right to repaint and leave the old worn outlet faces. They are highly recommended!

Manuel Jr., and his team are true professionals. I hired them to remodel my master bathroom however the scope of work quickly exceeded the original plan due to unforeseen structural problems. But this is why you hire a professional! I was given a plan to remedy the solution consisting of the extra work, permits & cost within a few hours time. Unfortunately I’ve had negative experiences with less competent contractors who simply wouldn’t have been able to handle a situation like this. You know you are dealing with the real deal when they can bring a structural engineer out to the house on short notice with only a call. The bathroom turned out great. The experience working with Jr., & Greenline was even better!

We decided to get the services of Dario at a point when we were in a time crunch. We had to tear down a half bath which sat on concrete foundation and convert to a full one. We also had to build 2 non-standard storage units. He gave us a fair estimate and an approximate timeline - the timeline he provided was not ideal for our situation - but we still decided to proceed with him. Here is a person who will answer/return your calls, reach your place before time and is honest. He is the first contractor whom we did not have to call 5 times before we got a response. This aspect of his work is crucial but often overlooked when people are looking to hire a contractor. There were several hiccups during the project, something which is expected. But Dario was on top of things and made sure that the overall timeline of the project was not compromised. In fact he also paid for a few things out of pocket. And this was all accomplished along with going through the city’s permit process. He was present for all inspections and made sure that that process also ran smoothly. He was receptive to feedback and changed/retrofitted anything that we found unacceptable. His team of people is also great and we never had any issues working with them. Dario would visit the project site every day and made sure communication was clear between him, his team and us. We highly recommend his work and wish him luck!

Needed an old wood deck demolished and replaced with a concrete patio slab in the back yard (about 375 sq ft.) and wanted a new patio slab poured in the unlandscaped side yard (about 200 sq. ft.). David was one of multiple contractors who "pinged" my request but the only one who responded to my request for an onsite estimate. We came to agreement on the deal in a day or two, David started the job the same day we signed the agreement and he and his crew just blew me away! They showed up on time, worked hard and well each day onsite, were organized, neat, professional, friendly and kept me in the loop on progress of the job. The finished result which included a plumbing job that was not part of the original job estimate and some extra finishing is just what I wanted and I'm thrilled! I would definitely recommend David Segura, Defersol and his team (especially Alejandro, who is a miracle!).

I recently updated my house. I asked my many friends about a contractor recommendation and none of them were happy with theirs. Mr. Mun worked at my house for six weeks and he was trustworthy and excellent. He did his best to satisfy the customer and I will hire him again, especially since my husband and I were very particular.

Phillip Price Construction did an amazing job on my home addition and remodel. My wife and I had never remodeled a house before and were apprehensive about selecting the right contractor. Once we met Phil and his son Nick we were very impressed with their quick and clear communication. They were very knowledgeable and went over their itemized quote with us. Once they started they flew through each phase of construction constantly updating us and keeping our decisions on track. All the worries and horror stories we heard about contractors were laid to rest very quickly once we started the project. We really got to know them over the 5 months we worked with them and really enjoyed the whole process. They truly made the process a lot easier than we had imagined. When it was all said and done they came it right on budget and a little before we expected. We could not be happier with our new home and the fantastic job Phil, Nick, and their sub contractors did. We highly recommend them and would never use any other contractor.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

For more on where to start when remodeling a bathroom check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
