Chris comes on time and is a very effective French instructor. Her teaching and guidance helps children learn the new language effectively. She makes sure she completes the material and is not time bound to finish in 1 hour and almost always stays longer. Her focus on the child learning the language properly. She is very good and I would recommend her any day.

I have been taking Spanish lessons from Ms. Price. She is incredibly personable, knowledgeable and helpful. My Spanish skills have soared since I've started with her. Very friendly, she is an excellent teacher. She knows where weak points are and knows how to explain advanced subjects in a way which is very understandable. I am definitely going to continue lessons and I highly recommend Ms. Price to anyone who is seeking to improve their language skills.

Isabel (Min) is a fantastic Mandarin teacher. She is an experienced teacher across all levels — from teaching beginners and children, to adults with some Chinese language background (like me). She is patient and professional, and tailors the Mandarin lessons to one's needs. I have been taking lessons with her for two years and my conversational Mandarin has improved significantly!

I took few classes from Chris last year and I must say that it has been phenomenal. Chris has got an amazing depth on different accents, language and grammar. I improved my accent a lot by learning some techniques. I will recommend Chris to anyone who is looking for accent reduction or adopt a different accent or simply talk in the public.

I met up with Johnny for my first lesson yesterday evening. It went even better than I expected. Here's my assessment. Administrative Style Johnny has been very professional and prompt. Johnny was the first to respond to my request for a quote. There were a total of 3 other quotes, but I value promptness so I went with him. He also continued to communicate quickly to setup what type of lessons I wanted, time, and location. He arrived early for the first lesson. Teaching Style Johnny asks me questions in a very polite way to understand what level of Chinese I am comfortable with. Then he starts the lesson. While observing my reaction to questions and my answers he tries to correct me where he can, but not in a stern or disruptive way. That helps us to continue with the lesson and progress. Towards the end of the lesson, he remembers all the details that I stumbled on and review them. That was a pleasant surprise. It shows how caring he is about what I need to improve on. Personality Johnny seems like a very professional and smart guy. However, he doesn't act arrogant or stern. I'm not sure how old he is, but he seems much more mature and experienced than his bio on Thumbtack might seem at first glance. I think I made a great choice with going with Johnny.

I've been taking personal language tutorial from Daniel for more than a year. His methods specifically tackle areas where I could improve most: grammar, idioms and pronunciation. His feedback is always specific, direct and fruitful. Thanks to his efforts, I reduced my accent and my speech became much more fluent.

I've never had so much fun learning a language. I've never been excited for lessons before or eager to do my homework and practice. Languages come hard to me but Jamal Jahwar is the most incredible teacher, he actually makes it fun and easy. I don't even notice the time passing!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
