Dar was amazing! I highly recommend Dar. His personalized service, his ability to look at our home and customize the decor was second to none. We interviewed many "stagers" and Dar was the only person to look at the "bones" of our house and know how to present the house at its best. If I was to ever need staging again, I would only use Dar -- and I would recommend Dar to any friend looking for a stager. According to my husband, his staging accentuated the best of the house and his staging made the house look better than we imagined -- as a viewer of the home, you didn't necessarily know how great the staging was -- it fit so perfectly with the home. As the owner, we realized that without the staging the home went back to just a house -- Dar got to know the house, and us, and made our home amazing.

I was looking online at several Staging Companies and Josh gave me the best info and I really liked his responses to my questions. We are in the process of transforming my home from one look to another hopefully in 3-4 weeks. He isn't pushy and he really listens to what I want and need. I can update after our project is done. So far really great!!! Karen

I really had a great experience working with Vee. I was on a time crunch but Vee was able assess what is needed and also made good use of existing furnishings. I was really happy to see how with small purchases she made a good change on how the rooms looked. She is easy to work with which made the whole process so much fun and enjoyable.I highly recommend her for her ideas, punctuality, professionalism and nature.

I cannot express highly enough our satisfaction in selecting Mari Deno at 8 DAYS Design to stage our home. Mari responded immediately to our search request and from the very beginning, she was extremely responsive and took the time to fully understand what we were looking for - in order to provide us with a well thought out bid that worked within our budget. My wife and I (and our realtor) unanimously agreed that Mari was best suited to put her heart and energy fully into staging our home - much more than anyone else we were considering. Plus, we loved her style and felt she understood how best to accentuate the look and feel of our home. Forget 8 days - we only had FOUR days to pull this off and Mari delivered, working until 4 am the last night to ensure the staging was completed for our photo shoot the following day. She even stayed with us during the photo shoot, working with our photographer to ensure every angle and nuance was highlighted to perfection. Her professionalism and attention to detail was nothing short of amazing and her staging surpassed our high expectations. That being said, at the end of the day what really matters is how well the market responds to the staging, and I am thrilled to report that we just received a FULL PRICE OFFER after our first broker/client open house - just 36 hours after hitting the market! This is truly amazing, given homes in our area typically sit for 270 days or longer. The staging definitely made a difference. This was a true partnership from the minute Mari responded to our thumbtack request, and we cannot express enough the importance of Mari's contribution to achieving a very positive outcome. I encourage anyone looking to stage a home to strongly consider Mari Deno - you will not be disappointed.

Sandi is awesome! Very easy to work with and has great touch and advice. I did this office makeover as a surprise for my husband and she helped through the whole process and kept me on track. She helped me choose all my large items and made sure it was within my budget. I had a pretty tight budget and she worked around it and accommodated. I would totally use her to fix up another part of our home! Thank you Sandi I've received so many compliments and my husband loves it!!!

It was such a pleasure working with Laura! I'm a realtor and hired Laura to stage my clients home before we put it on the market. She was able to work with my budget/time frame and did the most amazing job! We got an offer the first day on the market! She is incredibly talented and you will enjoy every minute of the staging process! I will never stage a house without her!

Sarah has exceeded my expectations with her ability to really listen to my needs and then deliver the furniture and decorations that are ideally suited to my home's coastal theme. Sarah is accessible and very communicative by text, phone and email. Sarah comes up with clever ideas to beautify a space that I could never think of. Sarah's passion to please her customer coupled with her ability to create breathtaking yet livable home spaces is really quite remarkable. Sarah came in on time and under budget for my staging experience. She does not nickel and dime you. We set a flat fee for the work and she made it all happen in the time frame she structured. Sarah transformed my average home into a stunning showplace. We're 95% done, and are still adding bits and pieces as she perfects the place. I will put up "before and after" photos as soon as the professional photographer sends them to me. My sister found Sarah on Thumbtack and she said Sarah seemed to "get it" immediately and was enthused to help. I contacted other staging companies, but I liked Sarah the best and hired her. I will engage Sarah on my next project. I highly recommend Sarah's creativity, her untiring work ethic and her reliability. If you're getting three bids for your next staging project, consider asking Sarah for a bid. You'll be happy you did.

I was looking for an interior designer and I found Sandy Kay and Company. I contacted Sandy and she referred me to Hanieh (Hani) Arefian. I was skeptical at first because I didn't know anything about Hani. I was surprised at how how quickly she offered solutions to my needs and requirements. She brings incredible ideas and great taste in her recommendations. She turned a boring looking house into a beautiful tasteful home and we're not even finished yet. I can't wait to see to final touch Hani will help us complete. I am so please with her design and recommendation. She is resourceful and always available to answer any questions I have. Hani is highly talented, enthusiastic, and fun to work with. I would recommend Hani to anyone who would like to have their home a makeover! Ann

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

    • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
    • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
      • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
    • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
      • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
    • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
    • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.
