I was a bit hesitant to use an online service but went with Thumbtack based on their reviews of Mr. Johnson and other customer reviews. From the start Mr. Johnson was very prompt in his response. The initial contact he answered all my questions and provided direction on potential problems. The service appointment was on time. Mr. Johnson was very knowledgeable and provided an excellent service call to meet our needs. I am more than satisfied and will use him in the future for any and all plumbing needs. It was a breath of fresh air to have a company provide outstanding service and have it done by a very nice individual. Thank you Mr. Bruce Johnson!!

Manny from DaVila Plumbing exceeded all expectations! He made a special exception and came at night to me even though he was only available the next day. He said he would be here between 8:00 and 8:30pm and he was punctual at 8:00pm. He did a quick fix on our drain and I am glad to have met him. I will now use him for all my plumbing needs! I would recommend using him!

We hired Juan to repair our aging sprinkler system. He provided us with a detailed estimate for the work that was needed and clearly explained what he needed to do. Juan impressed us with his knowledge and professionalism. Our yard is beginning to look alive again! Juan also provided us with plumbing repair work in our kitchen and bathrooms. We look forward to working with Juan on future plumbing projects.

Frank was great. He fit me into his schedule quickly, helped me figure out what I needed and did great work. Without a doubt I would recommend him for any plumbing work. It was also good to have someone who is good with the plumbing code, a lot of guys don’t seem to be doing work that an inspector would approve.

Houman answered our call for help. He came on a Sunday and was unable to locate a breaker replacement but did install a temporary breaker to get our electricity back on until he could get the breaker replacement. He was very knowledgeable, courteous, and professional. Did a great service.

Originally hired Shiner plumbing. They cancelled the last minute, just like other reviews had posted. So I called Elite plumbing and they were able to send someone else the same day. Will definitely recommend this company. And stay away from Shiner plumbing.

I have nothing but good things to say about Right Time Rooter. I had an emergency situation and Anthony from Right Time arrived within 30 minutes. He quickly assessed the problem, patched it up and made preparations to properly fix the piping that was poorly installed by the original plumber. Anthony and his team proved to be extremely knowledgeable and super professional. Work was completed in a very timely fashion with as little disruption to our business as possible. Next time we have an issue with our plumbing Right Time Rooter will Be our first call.

Edgar was excellent. Job was commercial. Came on time for the first appointment to give a quote. Gave a feasible quote (not like others who will give u a quote and make you think "Does this guy even know what he is doing"). He came couple of times to finish the job as it turned out to be a little complicated than we intially thought. Edgar handled it like a PRO (He is though :) ). Once he was done I had a small job at home and he promptly came and got that done in 30 mins. I would hire him again without even thinking to dial any other plumber. One quality which stood out was honesty. He is very honest and trustworthy and would not give you technical plumbing jargon's to quote you higher. Hire him to get you job done professionally and at a reasonable cost.

We could not have made a better choice. Gregory came out promptly for a review of the project and a free estimate, which I highly recommend. He is friendly and professional and the price was reasonable. To complete the change-out of an old kitchen sink, Gregory had to return twice. On the day of the install, he was here promptly at 8:00 in the morning and upon trying the new sink, discovered we needed some counter work done prior to completing the project. He then returned at 4:30 the same afternoon and worked until 6:30 to complete the project. His work was meticulous and beautifully finished. We will hire Gregory again for any plumbing needs we may have.

I have worked with Nick for over a two decades now. He has done numerous repair jobs and/or remodels for me on my homes as well as worked on a few rental properties I own. Everything from a roof repair, plumbing leaks/new plumbing, tile work, a new fence, Jacuzzi installations to full bathroom & kitchen remodels. He's always shown up on time when he said he'd be here and has completed the projects in the amount of time he estimated. His pricing has always been fair and the quality of work has always been exceptional. He cleans up after himself when he's done and makes sure that you're happy with everything before signing off on the work. He's a great guy to work with and has great sens of humor. With all the bad stuff you hear about construction people and contractors out there, he's a breath of fresh air. I've done everything from full new construction work to minor repairs and he's always the guy I call first. I'd recommend him to anyone looking for someone that they can count on the give you a good deal and get the job done without any headaches. Ken aka Monty

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.
