Manny was very responsive and he completed the job that 2 other plumbers said they could not do. Manny arrived within an hour and he was very reasonably priced. I will call him again next time I need help. I highly recommend him.

Juan was great. I'd had 3 plumbers out before him and none could tell why the gas line wasn't working. He figured it out and offered some reasonable solutions and good ideas to repair it, and ultimately charged less than what he had quoted.

I hired Frank to unclog my kitchen sink, which turns out needed a new garbage disposal. Total was around $230. I don't have experience with other plumbers so I'm not sure if his rates are on par, but I recommend him because he is ultra-responsive, fast and professional with his work. He responded to my inquiries within 10 minutes. When it turned out I needed a new garbage disposal he went right out to get one - no separate appt. The job from arrival to finish took about 1.5 hours. He even wiped up the floor when he was done.

We had two sinks in an upstairs bathroom that were clogged. Allan showed up on time, was friendly and professional. He had to go into the attic and snake the issue through the vent and finished the job within an hour. Thanks very much.

The service was fine. I had a basic clogged bathroom tub. The guy showed up right in time and it took him about 15 minutes to fix. Cost $85 Customer service could be better. I had been messaging with Vladamir on thumbtack and he said to call to schedule. However, when I called and asked if I was speaking to him (to make sure I'm dialing the correct number) he wouldn't confirm. He just asked who was calling. I told him my name and asked again if I was speaking to Vladimir and he asked what it was about. This was kind of frustrating bc I just wanted to know I was speaking to the correct person. He called the service guy and confirmed an appt for the next morning so that was easy. But the service guy also lacked customer service skills. I told him I couldn't get the drain open and asked him to show me how for in the future. He just ignored my question and I asked 1 more time. Ignored. He also had terrible body odor and I'm assuming 8am is his first appointment of the day. I had to air my bathroom out for an hour after he left for the smell to dissipate. Again, the service was fine, good price and quick. I would just appreciate better customer service.

As a contractor I'm particular about other contractors. I've also had a number of plumbers out to the house and have never called the same one back twice. Anthony will be the first I will call back. Super nice guy, prompt, and easy to contact. The price was also equal to or better than the other plumbers I've called. He got to the house and had the drain unclogged in no time. This is after I used my own snake, then went out and rented a 50' electric snake from Home Depot, spent hours on the drain, and finally gave up and called Anthony. I would highly recommend him for your drainage, hot water heater, most of your plumbing needs.

Isidrio is the BEST plumber (and tech) I've worked with. He was very professional, prompt, clean, and offered a very fair price. I've used him to install my water heater, fix a bathroom faucet leak, and he just remodeled by bathroom. It's hard to find people who are not just good at their job but who are also honest. I would recommend Isidrio for any job.

I would recommend MJ Plumbing for any plumbing job! I was given a good price, the work was quality, there were no issues, and they were professional! MJ Plumbing was one of the few plumbers who even gave me a quote, and his quote was the lowest! He was very responsive to messages on Thumbtack and very responsive to text messages. The MJ Plumbing team was also punctual and professional. The 2 gentlemen arrived early and they were ready to work. They had all the necessary tools and they were familiar with my issue. Once in my apartment, they asked me a few questions and immediately got to work. It only took them 20 minutes to fix my issues, I was very nervous that I had royally messed up, but the guys were able to fix everything. Once they were done in my bathroom they put everything back and cleaned up after themselves. Once the job was over, there was no issue with payment. When I booked the appointment, we discuss payment method. Once the job was completed, I paid him what was quoted and there were no issues. I am always nervous to hire workers because there are so many horror stories of things not working out, but this was the best possible situation. I would recommend MJ Plumbing to anyone who needs work done. I'm sure I will have future plumbing needs, so I will definitely be calling him up!

I am so pleased and fortunate to have worked with the CPR team. Best pricing, service and very punctual. They were very accommodating and did just a thorough inspection and created the most cost effective and long term fix. And this is after I got an estimate from 3+ plumbers. I will use them forever and will recommend to friends and family. Thanks guys!

My in-wall shower suddenly would not fully shut off. I thought that something in the valves in the wall would have to be replaced. Of the several plumbers that replied, Jesus gave me what sounded like a reasonable quote for the estimated work to be completed, fully disclosing that if the work turned out to be bigger than expected, the rate would be proportionally higher. Jesus had great communication, quickly responding via calls and/or texts. He arrived ahead of schedule the following day. He was polite, professional, and did not hesitate to answer all the questions that I had. He quickly saw that the shower valves needed to be replaced, and reassured me that this could be done without opening up the walls. He fixed the problem as agreed upon, and even helped me with a little side problem I had with an outdoor hose bib. I found Jesus to be punctual, have a good work ethic, and I would recommend Jesus for future plumbing jobs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.
