Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

Contact single-item movers near you to find out what services they offer, and get free estimates.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Contact professional furniture movers near you to get estimates for your move.

Super nice guys! Their communication was outstanding, they were on time and well groomed. Prior to moving the furniture they used moving blankets along with shrink wrap, and handled the furniture with care. These two are not your typical movers ... they’re a cut above! Give them a try!

Michael and his son and son's friend did a great job in getting our oversized sofa and loveseat moved out of my man cave. They worked carefully to get the furniture out of a window because the sofa was too big to go through an undersized hallway room entrance. I highly recommend Michael and plan to use him for future heavy item moves. All three wore face masks and we're friendly and respectful of our safety during this furniture move.

Great communicator and will use all the tricks in the book to move pesky furniture if needed. We had a wall to wall bookshelf that couldn't be broken down so he got it upstairs using the balcony. Very appreciative.

Donald was really helpful, I contacted him through Thumbtack and he stopped by my old apartment to get the look of the whole 2-Bed 2-Bath apartment move and gave me quote before finalizing the move. On day of the move he was there with all the important things needed to move. Wrapped all important furniture and packed the truck efficiently and was ready for the move. During unloading though it was little difficult as he has to share the elevator with another moving company at that time, however he still never overcharged me for the delay caused because of that. He and his team was great with the move. I would highly recommend him for your moving.

Sergey and Raul from New Generation Moving were exceptional in terms of the quality of the work they did for us, particularly moving a piano. They have a lot of experience, are efficient and extremely careful with each item, from the moving of the furniture pieces out of the home, into the truck and then back into the new home. They also proceeded to take the extra step to hook up our dryer for us. I can only highly recommend this company and both Sergey and Raul. You will not be disappointed. U. Levine

Michael and son Jonathon were professional, friendly, gave me status updates re their arrival, and went out of their way to help out. They also accommodated my very last minute request, which was for help to move just one piece of furniture. Highly recommend.

Not Professional and very rude. Others complained that they just left and dropped off customer furniture out in the street. I was just looking to move a Piano. Terrible company. STAY AWAY!!!! Reply from them: "So is that what you're expecting a $75 baby grand move lol" "sorry buddy I don't know what to say either you had a guy from Home Depot move it or somebody just decided to do it for free because that doesn't even cover the workers pay or the gas." Completely unprofessional they want about $400 for this move that a joke. Groupon deals charge much less for two hours of moving. STAY AWAY from this place.

Sometimes you need the Calvary and sometimes you need special forces! This dynamic duo proved to be exactly what I needed for a difficult job, moving heavy furniture items up two flights of stairs. Very reasonably priced, was able to do same day and got the job done! Recommended!

I HIGHLY recommend using Local Trucks for your move, they are professional and polite. The 2 gentlemen showed up on time, brought their own tools and went straight to work. They quickly dissembled and reassembled the bed, moved everything to the new apartment. They set up the furniture in the new apartment perfectly and verified that it was in the correct places. When I contacted them initially Rigo responded quickly. I had contacted him with short notice (48 hours) and he was able to squeeze me in. I appreciate his help!

This company is a gem, and I would go with them every time we consider moving. I would also confidently recommend them to any friends, family and strangers. The movers are careful yet swift. The owner is extremely responsive and accommodating. We were redoing our floors, so needed movers to bring everything from our second floor down to the garage. The turns down the stairs were pretty tight, and the movers gracefully brought down a ton of heavy and large furnitures (king sized bed, couch, dressers, desks, etc.) without issues. They also masterfully dismantled our bed frame and fridge, which was quite complicated. Once our flooring project was complete, they returned and brought everything back upstairs and reassembled everything. A couple of days, we noticed that the bed frame was a bit loose and couldn’t fix it ourselves. I reached out to the owner and he went above and beyond, sending his team back to help us fix it and a number of other things. In the owner’s own words, “I don’t like loose ends. We stand behind everything [we do], even accidents”. I can testify this to be true, the company works with integrity and diligence.
