FAQs
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I talk to the student about their interests and their home instrument. I review any previous materials used and ask the student to play something for me. I also check their sightreading and ear training ability. Afterwards, I establish a curriculum using technique, theory, and a variety of repertoire including the classics and music of personal interest to the student. I'll let you know what I think your strengths and weaknesses are.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Masters of Fine Arts in Piano Performance from UC Irvine. Bachelor of Music from UC Irvine. Many years of continued education and experience. Working as an evaluator and judge for competitions and exams has added to my experience as a teacher. Also a member of the Music Teachers' Association of California. I've also been fortunate to travel the world performing in a symphonic concert (see video in my profile) from 2006-2009. I'm happy to share my practice tips and training from my experiences.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
When I was 19, I gave my first piano lesson to a blind, autistic boy who showed a gift for music. The boy's parents wanted to see if music lessons with teacher was even possible. Communication was tough, but I devised a way for him to learn about the keyboard topography and basic coordination. Much to my relief, it turned out to be a success. I then was recommended by my piano professor to help a singer gain enough piano proficiency to pass the college music exam. I worked with her for several months, and she passed the exam - and told me in a very memorable happy phone call! I found I enjoyed sharing my knowledge with these students. I went on to work at local community schools, before adding private teaching and other school settings.
