We had concrete work done. But also required demolition and dumping, labor prior to pouring. Overall, the end result was exactly what we pictured. It was done in a very timely manner and very efficiently done. Very meticulous with quality of work.

Chris called to confirm our appointment the day before, and she showed up right on time. He got right to work on replacing a defective valve, relocated a sprinkler head, and repaired irrigation controller wiring. This guy really worked hard while he was here. One of the most pleasant contractors I have ever hired, he was professional, and he cleaned everything up when he was finished. I highly recommend Chris and the services he provides. Rating: 10/10 I had requested 2 sofa's to be picked up and be taken to the dump! One sofa was a large sleeper "L" shaped sectional and the second sofa was a studio sized "L" shaped sectional. Mr. Loera was extremely professional and responded quickly even though I am a night owl and was corresponding late at night. He was able to fit me in-in his schedule and Not only did he arrive on time but he was even a little early. Mr. Loera was very polite and nonthreatening. Easy to approach and got right to work. He wasn't pushy or try to change the price we agreed upon last minute. I would definitely Mr. Loera & James R Loera Construction; to any single females that need help moving things or to anyone looking for a reputable and trustworthy professional. I will definitely be calling Mr. Loera for future projects!

If Thumbtack allows users to more stars, I would grade Maha for 10/10! Before our project started, we interviewed almost 20 contractors and Maha is the only one provided the professional in-depth site analysis with very detailed bidding with all items broken down into material and labor as well as the amazing schedule analysis (and we did have the project finished prior to the original projection date). Thru out he entire project process, Houman (owner of Maha) was showing all his professionalism into all the detail and he was on-site everyday working with his crew, providing prompt update and honest suggestion in all area. He also provided very helpful weekly progress summary that help me to show to my management for the update. The entire crew was all professional, friendly, and showing their care to the premise owner every moment. Communication is 10/10 as well. At the end of the project, I noticed some additional item that I omitted earlier, and Houman was able to help me on those as well altho he didn't have to, all respect for that. I definitely will come back to Maha again if I have another project coming, also recommend them to anyone looking for professional and sincere designer/contractor.

This one-day poject involved removal of dirt, broken cement, and Palos Verdes stone, in addition to demolition of concrete and bricks steps. They were very hard workers, thorough, and cleaned up at the job completion. Bid was very competitive; they are a very reliable firm. Would definitely use them again.

We decided to install a hot tub in the backyard but needed a 220 connection away from the house. We tried to do some of the work ourselves by prepping an 18" trench for an electrician to come and wire. The soil was tough and the job harder than we thought. American Castles came and picked up where we left off, dug the remaining trench, connected the line, installed the box, and even recessed some of the line behind the stucco for a better visual. They didn't cut corners, showed up in a big team, and took care of everything without a problem. Price was reasonable. I would hire again.

We were looking for a contractor to remodel our kitchen when we contacted Team All Star Construction. The representative showed up on time which impressed us. We had already spoken to a few other contractors but Larry was kind of enough to sit and answer all our questions, so we hired them to do our remodel. The kitchen came out just beautiful and we could not be happier. This company is outstanding and are extremely happy we chose them.

Tom Torres of New Millennium is a top notch contractor. I was very through in contacting 4-5 contractors for estimates, the following determined my decision for choosing Tom - Communication - always returned calls or emails, always made sure I was informed Informative - answered all questions so I would have a better understanding (believe me, I asked tons of questions). Even checked pricing on a specific tile I was interested in $ - provided the best value Warranty - 5 year workmanship warranty/30 year tile warranty Years in Business - 12 Honest/Ethical - there were no hidden costs, he was straight forward with everything Licensed/Provided references Retained all city permits The work was complete on schedule. My #1 thing I can say is that, I never had to worry about a thing. Tom took care of everything & informed me of anything that I needed to know. If you don't have to stress about a big job & it just gets done at the best price, I don't think you can beat that. As you can probably tell I made Tom jump through hoops to earn my business & we couldn't have been happier.

Thank you Cabrera's Electrical. We have had so much work done on our home, yet when our private contractor retired, we did not know what to do. Cabrera's had the most professional response online. We had (2) large ceiling fans to be installed, and needed electrical re-wiring of the (2) wall switches that would be used. His quote was what our retired contractor told us it should be. Our fans and new electrical are perfect. I plan on using him again for other projects that we have. We have already referred him to friends of ours. It's such a relief to find somebody who cares about your home, as much as you do.

Jordan as a person was very nice. His inital follow up was prompt and he spoke very highly of his attention to detail. As a first time homeowner, I know little about construction and heavily rely on the expert knowledge of others to assist with our remodel. We hired Jordan after meeting three other contractors based solely on our interaction with him. When we originally had Jordan out to our house it was for a flooring quote only. Jordan explained he also preformed landscaping work on the side so we added that to our list. Jordan did an amazing job installing the floors! The entire dynamic of the house changed because of the floors. I was very disappointed in a few other areas which is the reason for 4 stars. We do not currently live in the house although we do have a few items in place for weekend visits. Towards the end of the job Jordan said that they were mostly finished so I had gone to check out the progress. The tile work in both bathrooms is crooked. The master bath is very noticeable. In addition, my bedding was covered in dust and they had smeared grout into the carpet in my bedroom. There was also sloppy grouting and caulking done in several areas of my home. To add insult to injury his crew decided it was ok to help themselves to my kids popcicles - this actually upset me just asuch as the tile floor. Giving credit where it is due: Jordan and Tim did have my carpets cleaned, my bedding dry cleaned and I was given the option to have them rip up the bathroom floor or receive a discount from my final bill. Jordan did offer to replace the missing popcicles as well although that never did happen. The landscape looks nice as well but we asked to keep the remaining turf and that also didn't happen. I asked jordan about it and he said what was salvageable was in our shed - it wasnt. Again, I was very happy with the floors but the other items make it hard to say if I would rehire for additional projects. Nice guy but I didn't feel like our home was cared for in the way he said it would be. If you do decide to hire Jordan my recommendations would be: 1. Get a detailed breakdown of the work 2. Notate about the use of your personal items (they completely filled up both our garbage cans) 3. Inspect. Inspect. Inspect. Check every corner.

After having a water leak, we decided to have the kitchen and family room renovated. This involved the replacement of floors, counters, sink and cooktop as well as refinishing extensive cabinetry. We were not remotely impressed by the first 4 or 5 contractors we called. We then had Morena Tile and Home Design come to provide an estimate. The difference was amazing. Sami and his team immediately demonstrated working knowledge of what needed to be done and how it could be accomplished in each area. After their analysis we did not look further because we felt we had finally found the contractor for the project. The quote was in the ballpark of what we thought it would cost so we did not even consider looking for a lower bid. The whole project started and ended in a timely fashion. The various workers were obviously experienced in their respective fields and performed beautifully. Even so, there was daily review and supervision of the project by a manager. I had heard nightmare stories about contractors from many sources but with Morena, we never had an unpleasant moment. There were no surprises or additional costs except for changes we requested. The attitude of all involved was so positive and friendly that we actually missed them when it was over. The finished product was impressive and as close as it can come to perfect. We are looking forward to having this company remodel other areas of our home very soon and highly recommend them. Tina T San Clemente, CA

My experience with contractors has not always been favorable, however, Artisan Design & Build has set a new standard of EXCELLENCE. Sidney, the head contractor, was able to understand what I wanted/needed and made suggestions that were cost efficient. Not only is the work first-rate and aesthetically appealing, he was able to complete the jobs before the deadline.

We contracted Jeff and Rick after getting bids from 5 other companies. We mainly dealt with Jeff for the majority of the job. He is very professional and detail-oriented, which we appreciated. He sent us an estimate and we hired him soon after- but then he told us he made a mistake and needed to charge 15% more for labor costs. We negotiated what we thought was more reasonable and he agreed. After a few more weeks of delay, he told us that Rick underestimated another portion of the job and would have to charge more as well. By this point (5 weeks after officially telling them they were hired), we were anxious to get started so we again agreed to the change. They started a week later and were done in three weeks. The good news is that we're very happy with their craftsmanship- everything looks exactly like we wanted it to. We were just disappointed with all the changes and delays. We will consider them for future jobs as their price for this project was very reasonable compared to other contractors.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
