It is such a pleasure to do business with Box Construction. Mr Box is so committed, honest, trustworthy, thorough, knowledgeable and helpful. He came out for an estimate and thoroughly inspected my roof, then gave me excellent advice. He offered multiple options available to help me decide how best to fix my problem. He and his team executed the job with diligence and an attention to detail. They were all trustworthy, hard working and polite too. Stephen Box and Box Construction go above and beyond what is expected on the job. He took care of my construction needs as if I were part of his family. I highly recommend and refer them to all who have any type of construction need. I look forward to doing business with them in the future.

I contacted Houman over internet. Had several jobs for him in my new condo. We reviewed what work needed to be done and he gave me an estimate. He worked quickly and extremely neat and carefully. He put in new electrical outlets Redesigned cabinetry and installed it. Broke through walls for electrical work patched and painted. I cannot even find where he did the work. Set up closet systems, shelving in three closets hung shelves, fixed leaking faucets and installed two large lights in the garage. Bought supplies that were needed and showed me better ways to accomplish what I wanted. He is a man of many talents and I will call him again when I have other projects. I highly recommend Houman

Jerome did a wonderful job installing the closet system in my master bedroom. He had all the tools to cut the materials to fit. He also installed 2 saf racks in my garage. My garage is small so I thought only 1 would fit but he was able to fit both 4 x 8 racks in securely. I will hire him again for any other installation projects and will be recommending him to my friends and neighbors.

Our experience with Hector was amazing. He installed cabinets, lighting, and electrical work in our garage (basically remodeled the garage). He is extremely hard-working and treated the job as if he was doing it for his own house: no shortcuts. His prices are very reasonable and he is a man of his word! You cannot go wrong with Hector! Excellent work and we look forward to working with him on ALL upcoming projects. We have found a handyman for life!

Oscar was very professional and new what to do . He installed 2 water lines for my refrigerator for inside my home and the other in my garage . Also he replace my main water shut off valve from plastic to copper. But his highlight was he went the extra step and took the time to go and purchase another item for me ( which he didn't have ) to make sure everything worked before he left. That tells a lot about that person . I will definitely keep Oscar in mind for future projects ...

Milton and his son were exceedingly professional and friendly. I have worked with several electrical companies, and I must say Milton is Highly skilled, very efficient and an experienced electrician. Clean working habits. They cleaned their work space. Tested the outlets to ensure all in great working condition. Went above and beyond the scope of the project and patched the holes resulting from installing the outlets as well as patching unrelated holes in the closet. Their price was fair and competitive. Quick response time and scheduling. Spoke with him yesterday afternoon and he finished the project today. Will highly recommend this company and use their services in the future. I couldn’t have been more pleased! Thank you

After looking into our project (drywalling garage and some demolition), we realized we wanted to wait on this project and save up for a better budget that would serve our needs better. However, our experience with George was very professional from the get go. He called and stopped by the very same day I posted the project. He provided an estimate on the spot, and even stopped by a day later to drop off a written estimate. Since we want our garage to serve as a gym/work area, we realized we needed a bigger budget to serve our needs and have the final project be as nice we'd like. George's professionalism left me feeling very impressed and comfortable with him. This is the type of man you could trust both inside/outside of your home, and for this reason, I'll definitely be considering George for any work my home needs in the future!

Germaine and his crew did an excellent job on my project. They installed a subpanel on my detached garage that required a 100 foot trench. They ran into some problems that took them a little longer than originally planned, but he communicated clearly and finished the project with great quality. I will definitely hire Germaine and his team again for future projects.

Darrion has done a number of jobs for my house and he always does a great job. What I like the best is that you get a feeling that he knows what he is doing and his repairs would be the best quality. He has a ton of experience and knows what he is talking about. He can do any repairs in the house as he has built a lot of houses. I highly recommend Southland Torres Construction. The prices are reasonable.

Jake reached out to me right away and was ready to come do the job right away! Initially, we were trying to navigate the repair over the phone, but I was so glad that he ended up coming by and exploring a more practical and inexpensive option for the job. The quality of his work and attention to detail are stellar.....and I am very picky. I had him do a second job the next day to fix my house and garage trim....boy, was I shocked to see the final product. It was AWESOME! I'm planning to continue working with him on the rest of my 'wish list'. Jake is amazing and I love the ideas he brings!

I highly recommend Jerry and his crew. First, their craftsmanship is definitely superior - it’s as good as you’re going to find. I hired Jerry to add an attic floor (for storage); completely renovate our garage (adding a toilet/shower); and to then transform our kitchen into my wifes vision. His work is exquisite, his team is friendly and professional, and it’s clear they all have a passion for what they are doing, and have been doing it through generations. We’re lucky enough to own a quaint 1920s craftsman that’s in great shape, so we wanted someone with plenty of experience working on these Pasadena/Altadena homes and that could match the craftsmanship. Jerry intimately knows this area, so he can work on anything. We wanted out open-format kitchen to match the look of the house, and it does so remarkably. Jerry’s great at working with your budget, being clear about costs and what they are going toward, and I always felt like his finished product exceeded my expectations. From caring for our house’s original work when we install our attic-floor, to finishing the deck and awning that’s now attached to our kitchen. You’ll be glad you get this crew!

Ramos & Son Contruction Co has done alot of projects for me over the years. I live in a Tri Level home in Covina Ca and Juan Ramos has Remodeled my 2 bathrooms, Kitchen area, Outside waterfall pond, electrical work, reinsulated the upstairs walls in all bedrooms, plumbing work, recessed lighting, repositioned a major support post in my Garage area for more room in the laundry room, installed Crown molding around the interior of my home, and painting. I have a touching story of Juan Ramos, In the summer of 2016 as Juan Ramos was reconstructing my exterior waterfall pond area, my 4 year granddaughter was placed in foster care, so I had applied for my granddaughter to get placed with me, there was alot of things that I had to do to get my home ready for inspection by the dept of Children Services for the home to be approved for my granddaughter to be placed with me. Inspection day came and everything was looking good until the social worker inspected the fireplace, the social worker indicated that she could past the. Inspection because the fireplace did not pass because the fireplace had a steel mesh protector in the front and that it needed a more stable protector, my heart just dropped because my granddaughter was still in foster care with people she did not know. So, immediately I thought of Juan Ramos that was outside rebuilding my pond as the social worker was there doing the inspection. I immediately went outside to ask Juan Ramos if he could temporarily construct a temporary barrier in front of fireplace so the inspection could pass. The social worker said that would be good and ask me to send a picture of the temporary barrier once its installed since she had to leave for her another assignment. Juan Ramos immediately went to Home depot to get the materials needed to construct barrier as I had to report back to work, Juan Ramos completed the temporary barrier within a couple of hours and then he sent me the picture of barrier so I could send to the Social worker, the Social worker was impressed and approved home for my granddaughters placement with me. My granddaughter now has a safe home, and I have adopted her and she now goes to a Christian school in Covina Ca. I give alot of thanks to Juan Ramos for going out of his way and doing this for my granddaughter . Overall Juan Ramos does excellent and remarkable work, his work is very neat, clean, and very detailed at a great price, there was never no delay in all the projects that he has done at my home. Most importantly he's a man of honor, with a heart of gold. I have so much respect for Juan Ramos because of his honesty and caring nature. Best contractor I have ever met in my life.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
