I see an improvement in my dog after one visit! Walking my dog was excruciating before but Karen taught me how to walk her and I already see that walking my dog does not have to be a horrible experience! Also learning that I am the pack leader and my dog's sitting and staying is better too.

Dee Cee came to our apartment and within half an hour I saw immense improvement in the relationship between the dog and the cat. She gave us excellent advice and doesn't ask for repeat sessions. I really appreciated her forthcomingness in not giving us any promises but the promise that she was giving us the tools to succeed.

We'll never use a kennel again! We had to leave town very last minute for a funeral in Canada. Barbie and her team jumped in right away and took the pets off our list of details to deal with at this difficult time. We received photos every day of our cat and dog, comfortable and relaxed in their own home while we were away. We came home to very happy, calm, and well pets. And we didn't worry at all while we were away. Not only were our pets well cared for, the whole process, from first contact to pre-visit to payment to return of key, was completely stress-free. We could all use a little extra ease in our life, and Barbie and her team are doing their part to make that happen in the pet care realm. Thank you!!!

Lisa watched my dog and my cat over the holidays and she was wonderful. Our dog got three 1/2 hour walks per day (more than he gets with us) and so much play time in our back yard - he had an absolute blast. Not to be left out of the mix, our cat was in Lisa's arms all of the time being stroked while the three of them watched TV, the litter box was always fresh and clean and so was the surrounding areas and every night we got text updates of the days events and on some of the days pics of our guys as well. When we came home, our mail was stacked neatly on the table, our plants looked wonderful and other than that, you would never have known that Lisa was ever in the house it was so clean - cleaner than when we left. Our animals were so happy and content, and George, our dog, slept for a full day he was so tired from all of his play time. We now use Lisa as our regular walker for George and we can tell he is thrilled to be able to see her all of the time. Lisa is great, we highly recommend her.

Over the past 7 months I've had several trips out of town. Having recently moved before my first trip, I was very concerned about leaving my cat, Lucy. A friend recommended Over & Out Petsitting and they were great. Coming by beforehand to meet Lucy, to learn all her routines and taking notes to make sure everything would be done correctly. That first, 4 day trip went smoothly. I received text pictures of my cat everyday. And when I returned she was happy and healthy. My next trip a few months later was for a week. Again, everything was wonderful. My last trip I was gone 3 weeks - a long time. And once again, the service and care Lucy received was outstanding. I didn't worry about her which enabled me to enjoy my vacation. Over & Out Petsitting is on my speed dial - I will definitely use them to take care of my cat again.

I have a GSD with a serious case of separation anxiety. We got pet walkers to help and Jessie was one of them. Jessie was not afraid, took control, and my dog loves her. Jessie is prompt, will let you know if she notices anything wrong, and will make suggestions on food/training if you need help. She goes above and beyond - she helped search for my dog when sable escaped the vet/boarding kennel facility on her own time. I highly recommend Jessie's walking and overnight pet sitting.

Cant say enough good things about Randi. She was recommended to me from a kitty organization so I felt very good about leaving my cats with her for 5 months. I had looked into other places and felt really uncomfortable. I could tell how much Randi loves animals and how much she cares for them. She even got my big fat Romeo to lose some weight. Hurray!!! She trained them too. My Romeo is a tough cookie he doesn't like people to much and hisses at everyone. He so did with her too. But after 2 weeks he fell in love with Randi and they became best friends. I felt so comfortable that after a few weeks I could let go of worrying if they were ok. I knew they were. She probably even took better care of them then I do. I have already asked her to take care of them later this year. So as you can tell I love her and can highly recommend her. She cared so much about my cats that she cried when I picked them up after 5 months... that I call sincere love! Sofia cat mom to Romeo and Loppis October 2015

I'm so glad I hired Pacific Grooming mobile. Since it was my kitty's first grooming I wanted to be relaxing, and Sandy made it possible. When I went to pick my cat from the van it seem so relaxed and clean. Sandy also took the time to email me some tips in how to keep my cat and apt. flea free. It was so nice to have my pet's grooming done right outside my home, one on one. I loved the experience and will definitely hire Pacific Grooming Pet Salon again.....:)

It was a tall order....a four year old cat, never been groomed, very anxious and skittish with strangers needed a bath in a big way. She had gotten locked in a kitchen drawer yesterday and urinated on herself and in my drawer. She smelled ghastly and I needed a groomer today. The girls rallied, were here on time, took great care of Lily and brought her back 30 minutes later smelling like a rose. They also trimmed her nails, cleaned her ears and did a little de-shedding on her coat. She is a new kitty. Wish they could work their magic on my kitchen drawers. I highly recommend the Glitterati girls and would use again. May ask them to tackle Lily’s sister who is a handful. Oh and did I mention they were the least expensive of the quotes I received? The service was not inexpensive but all inclusive. If you need a mobile groomer, keep these kitty lovers in mind!

To whom it may concern, I am writing to recommend Jo-Jeanne Rapier, whom I have known and employed for the past nine years. Jo-Jeanne provided day care, walks, medication administering, boarding, and transportation for my Border Collie, Cilla as well as house sitting, as I was often working out of town. Sometimes those jobs came on short notice and I came to rely heavily on her services and with her dependability, punctuality and trustworthiness, I was never disappointed. I always returned to a happy, healthy, and well groomed dog, my house in pristine condition, and with Jo-Jeanne’s green thumb, my garden always looked better than how I left it. In the final months of Cilla’s life, Jo-Jeanne’s compassionate care was invaluable. She doted on Cilla, as if she was her own, and made that difficult time in Cilla’s life, and mine, an easier transition. With Jo-Jeanne’s past involvement of running her own dog rescue, Abandoned Terrier Rescue Association, she is also a staunch advocate of animal rights. And I have witnessed first hand her skills and abilities in working with many kinds of animals and I would give her my highest recommendation with the care of any of your pets. If I can provide any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me at: (818)-434-1123 Sincerely, Eric Sandlin

Kayla provided pet sitting for my 3 cats. She feed them and cleaned litter boxes daily for 12 days. She played and groomed them to the extent my cats would let her. She made sure my one cat that required medication got that daily. I would recommend her to others and use her again.

So good! She sent pictures of my cat everyday, and texted updates of what she had done that day and what my cat had done. When I got back, she had a detailed form left of things like litter box uses, feeding and other behaviors. I was really worried about leaving my cat but she made it much easier :)

We have a 3 1/2 year old cat that is new (2 weeks) to our family. The vet suggested that the cat stay home and not be boarded while we are on a short trip. George (Wiskers, Tails and Mail) was very understanding of our situation. He took excellent care of our cat and her new environment (litter box, feeding area, etc.). George also kept me informed on her activities while we were away. Utilizing the services of Wiskers, Tails and Mail was a huge relief during our time away. I highly recommend George and his company as they really provide more then pet sitting. They also supply peace of mind for the owner. P.S. I ran out of time to have the mail stopped and at the last minute George stepped into collect the mail on a daily basis. What a life saver! George and Lorna, thanks for everything!

Barbara was fantastic. Conscientious, capable and kind. She took care of a nineteen year-old cat that needed 4 types of medication and sub-cutaneous fluids twice a day. And our beloved cat actually gained weight!!! Plus walking and pampering two dogs. She sent us pictures and texts, staying in communication, and watered our plants and left the house in great shape. She's a responsible person who is home most of the time. Can't recommend her enough.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do cats have to get groomed?

It’s not crazy to have your cat groomed. Grooming will keep your cat’s fur soft and silky as well as give you early warning about any health concerns. Regular grooming can also help reduce the volume of hair your cat may be shedding and keep your longhair kitty cool if you live in a warm climate. Professionals competently groom your cat and are trained to manage them if they resist being groomed, while you may get scratched doing the same task. The national average price for cat grooming is $50-$70. Pet grooming prices may vary based on the task. For example, a bath and brush for shorthair cats may be $15, $20 for medium-hair cats, and $25 for a longhair. Cat groomers can also keep your cat’s ears cleaned, trim their nails, and provide haircuts if needed. Average prices for haircuts can vary from $30 to $95 or more, depending on whether the cat is shy or aggressive and whether their coat is in good condition, matted, or otherwise difficult to groom.

How much should cat grooming cost?

Keeping your cat groomed is an important part of maintaining their good health. The national average cost for cat grooming ranges between $50 and $70, with prices varying based on where you live and the services you request. Your cat’s temperament can also affect grooming prices. Scratching and hissing during a groomer visit can raise rates an average of $5-$10, or more, as hazard pay. Larger cats and long-haired cats that take longer to groom will also usually cost more. Here are some examples of cat grooming average costs:

  • Shave down or lion cut: $35-$60. These cuts preserve the hair around the face and tip of the tail but shave down the entire body. The lion cut is often recommended for extremely matted hair is exceedingly matted, for extreme heat, or for cats who are suffering from hairballs.
  • Ear cleaning and nail trim: $30.
  • Nail trim: $10-$15.
  • Bath and nail trim: $45.
  • Bath and sanitary trim: $55. A sanitary trim clips the hair on a cat’s behind to prevent fecal matting in longhair cats or cats that have mobility issues.
  • Bath, blow-dry, brush out, nail trim and ear cleaning: $40.
  • Full haircut, bath, and nail trim: $45-$95, depending on matting.

Where can you get your cat groomed?

Cat grooming keeps your cat’s fur tangle-free and clean. Most businesses that offer dog grooming or general pet grooming also offer cat grooming; some businesses even specialize solely in cat grooming. Look for a professional who has training grooming cats or belongs to a professional association such as the National Cat Groomers Institute, because cat grooming techniques can be different than for dogs. Cat grooming can encompass a wide range of services. In addition to haircutting, hair detangling and hairstyling, cat groomers can trim cat nails, clean out your cat’s ears, give flea baths, demat, trim facial fur, bathe and even blow-dry your cat. Health safety and etiquette requires your cat to be in good health and have all their vaccinations before using grooming services.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

  • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
  • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
    • 45-minute visit: $28.
    • 60-minute visit: $32.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
    • 12 hours: $100.
    • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.
