Let me start off by saying that Raquel exceeded all expectations by far and we feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to work with her. We recently adopted a pocket pit bull terrier from the shelter and named her Reina. We have had pretty good success on our own with house training, kennel training, and obedience within our home. The issue is whenever we took Reina outside, we realized we cannot walk past other dogs in the neighborhood. Before Raquel, we hired a trainer and also someone else to 'socialize' her and both failed terribly. After tons of online research, we realized that she has 'fear aggression'. We needed help from a mental standpoint. We desperately needed a 'behavioral specialist'. We needed someone to assess her psychologically so that we know what's going on in her head and more importantly, for us as dog owners to also be trained on how to manage the situation moving forward. That is where Raquel's expertise comes in. Right from the start, you know she is the real deal. Even though we have been trying our best with different techniques, nothing compared to hiring an actual dog whisperer. Raquel will be able to analyze you and your dog, and know exactly where to fill in the cracks of the foundation you have already set. She will teach you how to communicate with your dog with the correct energy you will need in order to set you up for success. Raquel is very patient and super easy to get along with. She will waste no time in your session and tackle the very issue you are having with your dog. On top of all this, Raquel will always be available for help once she knows your case. This alone is priceless and the investment is by far worth it and more. Very knowledgeable and her experience alone should set her apart from so many. We are extremely happy to say that Raquel gave us the confidence and the right tools to finally move in the right direction with rehabilitating Reina's aggression. No more clouding our minds with the internet confusing ourselves and our dog. We would and will, highly recommend Raquel to anyone else who needs special help with their fur baby!!!! :-)

Karen is a dog whisperer! We got a new 8 week year old puppy that's now 4 months old and he was absolutely out of control. He had so much energy and was too smart for his own good. Karen helped us take control as the pack leaders and taught us how to be the Alpha Dog with him. She is more than a dog/puppy trainer, she is a people trainer too. She is extremely knowledgeable and helped us so much. Our pup now listens to us and is so much better on his leash, greeting guests, and finally potty trained! I highly recommend her to anyone in need of training for their sweet pup! :)

I first met Duane Overturf over 15 years ago, when he came to my home to train my dog Jumbuck. He assessed the dog immediately before deciding on the training. Training in the dog park followed the training at home. Apart from my dog having a wonderful character, he turned out to be one of my best dogs regarding obedience and reliability. About two years later he also came to our home to train Jumbuck's companion, a totally different type of dog, who also understood very quickly what was required of him. Duane has a knack for getting dogs to feel relaxed and make training enjoyable. He is very reliable, thorough, and i enjoyed working with him.

I adopted a 3 year old Jack Russell named Jack who had severe behavior issues such as: trying to bite other dogs and people, excessive barking and destruction of property. I could not take him on walks nor have visitors to my home without confining him. Two trainers before Bob had no success and I was at my wits end when a friend told me about Bob. Jack was now 6 years old and I had my reservations of successful training of a dog his age. Bob was patient, loving and firm with Jack and me. He taught me how to maintain the training and also trained me as well ! He was punctual and would tailor each session to Jack's particular stamina that day. Bob is a perfectionist, he believed in Jack and he would not rest until he brought out all of Jack's good personality traits while exorcising the bad behavior. He worked with Jack at crowded public places, at home, and around other dogs extensively. Bob proved to me that he indeed could teach an "old" dog new tricks ! As a testament to the amazing transformation that Bob gave Jack: I made Jack a service dog to my mom going everywhere she went and Jack accepted a rescue dog into my home for three years without issues. Sadly, Jack succumbed to cancer last June. I tried desperately to save him, and he was in the hands of several specialists and underwent many procedures. I heard over and over again how good and sweet Jack was with everyone. I said to myself "if you only knew !". Thanks Bob, for your help to give us the last few years of sheer joy with Jack...we will never forget you.

We have an 8 month old lab that we were having trouble with her jumping on people and nipping all the time. After the first day of training we saw a great improvement. She also walks very nicely on a leash now and doesn't tug anymore. I would highly recommend Ruff Pup Dog Training!

Steve and his team are abosultely fabulous, so very friendly and down to earth!!! We left our 4 year Old English Bulldog, Boris, with him for a 14-21 day boot camp to help with aggression and obedience. While Boris was learning at boot camp, Steve had my husband and I learning as well though one of his beginner training DVD. After practicing with the DVD and several calls with Steve (he was always available for questions whenever they came up), our whole perspective on pet ownership and responsibility shifted for the betterment of our entire family! Every family member has a role and a job, Boris included!!! Boris was ready to come home at 14 days because he responded so well to the training. When we arrived to get him, my husband and I did a nice hour long training session with Steve and two of his wonderful trainers. We feel very confident with the skills and tools SW K9 has given us to continue Boris' success! It's also extremely nice that they call and check up on him/us even after the job is finished. Our relationship with Steve and his trainers will definitely continue beyond this one job!

Pawsability was above and beyond anything I could have imagined! I have a new rescue dog and I wanted to make sure she stayed in our home when we went away. We also wanted to start her off on some basic training so we hired Pawsability to come and take care of Sky. We had a meet and greet at my house and Theresa spent a good hour explaining her services and even giving us tips to help us w our new rescue. During the stay they took sky on the daily trips they do as part of the community daycare program and Sky got to be socialized and have "on the job" training with other dogs and new people. We were sent texts, videos and photos frequently with wonderful updates about sky's progress. My house was left beautifully and Theresa even washed the sheets and towels she used. She left a report and set up our final training session that was included in our board and train fee. Oh and the fee was extremely reasonable. When we returned home Our dog was happy, healthy and had learned the beginnings of obedience training. I couldn't be happier and highly recommend this service. We will definitely enroll Sky in their daycare as well.

My husband and I inherited my mom's 5 yo Yorkie mix "sweetie" after she passed away from breast cancer. Although a sweet dog she had never been socialized with other dogs, she was nervous, barked on every walk, and had no formal obedience training. Finding a trainer was paramount to our quality of life. Both my husband and myself are very active/outdoor people and we wanted to be able to take our new pup with us. K.O training assessed and created an individualized program for sweetie. (And us!) Building her confidence without making her more nervous. They taught us techniques to practice at home and with consistency she is now more confident. She is able eat with us at outdoor venues without the barking and nervousness. Walking in highly populated areas are enjoyable. She follows commands such as sit, lay down, and Leave it. Being a new dog owner I found their training effective and kind. They were able to teach a new dog owner & dog who had just lost their mom. All done during a very stressful time in both our lives, I can't thank them enough. Our quality of life as new dog owners has improved tremendously. I highly recommend K.O. Training

So I live in Alabama and have a friend in Tn. that had bought a dog from Vince. The dog was one of the best working dogs I have seen. The dog was the perfect balance of work and home. I reached out to Vince with some questions about a dog I had just bought. Being that I don't have the time to take off of work and fly out to California with my dog and train with him, Vince never once hesitated to answer my questions. I kept him up to date on my training and I hit a wall, I had a few problems I couldn't seem to work out. Vince offered very precise training advise and even went so far as to ask me for a few videos and then sent me some videos of the training I could use to show me exactly what I could do to accomplish my goals. Nobody else would have done that, nobody else would have cared. Vince truly cares about dogs and wants to make sure that you and your dog have the best relationship and quality of life possible. I am actively trying to find a way to get me and my dog to him so I can train with him and thank him in person for all that he has done for me. It's never hard to discern when someone is doing it because they love what they do or if they are doing it because they love them money it brings. I can assure you Vince is in it because he loves dogs and he loves what he does. Truly one of the best people I have met in the dog training industry. Thanks again Vince for everything you have done for a know nothing beginner like me.

I met DANIELE LARGO outside my bank about a year and a half ago. She had such a beautiful, uplifting energy about her. I thought she was so beautiful and happy, and I just wanted to get to know her. She has such an inviting demeanor; we just started talking. Somehow we ended up talking about dogs. She is a remarkable person and dog whisperer extraordinaire. We have three cute little white rescue dogs and have been putting up with a lot of mischief from them. We'd call one and he/she would turn and walk the other way; plus, two different dogs each thought they were the alpha! We had toileting problems, too much unwanted barking, they were impossible to walk, you get the picture. We love them so much - Jack, J.J. and Kate. We're planning to move sometime soon, and for so long I'd been thinking about what to do about our doggie situation. I knew I needed to do something - SOON. Sweet Daniele had been keeping in touch with me during the gap since meeting, but momentarily I had forgotten about Danielle's special talent. Surprise, she called me the next day! Since we started working with Daniele things have really changed around here. We see the changes as each day goes by. Joe and I have worked with the dogs in all the ways she has taught us and it has really paid off. Yes, people need to get engaged in the learning process along with their pets. We have learned so much about understanding dog behavior, an essential part of having a great relationship with your precious baby. Danielle is so in-tune with our dogs and the ways we all relate together, that she understands what's going on with all of us. They each have different issues and they all love Daniele. They are anxious to please her, and now they focus with us much better also. Each one has really stepped up and they are falling into line as a cohesive family unit. We already have less barking, less toileting problems, less jealousy, and more obedience. Our home is happier and calmer thanks to this special lady. We highly recommend her for anyone having problems with their animals, or, if they just want to have a better trained dog, or other issues. Daniele has also helped our doggies, and Joe and I to better health with the Protandim she carries. What a difference! She has so many great ideas that have helped us accomplish our goals, for our doggies and ourselves. We couldn't be happier that we engaged Daniele to help us. Call Daniele, she's worth more than you can imagine...you won't be sorry! With Gratitude, Carole and Joe Wike

We had a great experience with Dianne Lawrence when she gave our puppy (mixed german shepherd/lab) obedience training including walking on a leash and most important, teaching the dog how to behave around people and other dogs. Her style is gentle, but firm, and commands respect from the dog without being harsh. She also focuses on the human relationship with the dog and makes you understand your role in the dog's behavior. Dianne's focus is not to personally train the dog, but to teach you as a dog owner to train the dog. Along with the general obedience training, Dianne also taught us how to train our dog to sit, lie down, come, and stay. We have nothing but positive things to say about Dianne and recommend her wholeheartedly as a fantastic dog trainer. Our dog loved Dianne, and was eagerly wagging his tail every time he saw her.

About

Whether you are looking for the best bath in town or the perfect clip, Manny is the one! Manny started as the apprentice to our previous, quite-popular groomer, Amanda in 2001. Manny repeatedly showed his talent as a groomer, and in 2005, when Amanda moved on from our employ, Manny attended the Wag My Tail Grooming School and graduated at the top of his class, and they wanted to keep him. Manny has trained several of our competent, conscientious grooming assistants to provide us with the ability to have excellent staffing 6 days a week. The grooming shop at Hollywood Dog Training School can be quite popular, so book your grooming in advance. In most cases, when dogs come in for grooming, we ask that they arrive between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m., and they will spend some of the day with us until the go-home time that you arranged with us. Unlike the average grooming shop, dogs do not spend their whole time in a small cage or crate. We have dog runs dedicated for our grooming shop so that you your dogs can stretch their legs, have a place to eliminate, and get a drink of water. All of the baths we do here at Hollywood Dog Training School include a nail trim, cleaning the ears, and a full brush out. Our modern, state-of-the-art equipment allows us to do an unparalleled job; you won't believe the difference. We feature the HydroSurge bathing system for an amazing clean. We use a low=sodium, soap-free, sulfate-free, and no-perfume shampoo that leaves almost all pets itch free. Mighty wind dryers reduce brushing time drastically and make the brush out superior to doing the job with a brush alone. Most pets are finished with a light pet cologne that most clients love.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
