Introduction
Hi! I’m Wes Nelson, and I am a professional bass and guitar teacher. I can teach whatever style of music you're interested in (indie, rock, pop, funk, jazz, etc.) as well as songwriting, sightreading, production, and music theory. All skill levels are welcome, and no experience is required. My teaching combines hands-on playing with theory so that you not only learn your favorite music, but how it works. My purpose as your teacher is to help you realize and achieve your goals as an aspiring musician.
I have 16 years of music experience as both a bass player and guitarist and have an MFA in music from CalArts. I have extensive international touring, studio, and performance experience alongside artists like Mike Stern, zzzahara, Ny Oh, LP Giobbi, DJ Tennis, Bonzie, and Randy Brecker and at recording studios like East West and Capitol Records. I have 6+ years of experience teaching privately and in public high schools. All of this has given me a deep perspective on what it means to be a musician. Music has deeply enriched my life and my job is to help it enrich yours regardless of your skill level or goals.
Lessons are available both in-person and online.

Wes is a musical genius imo. First off, He has all the skills that you’d expect in any good teacher - patience, professionalism, communication, attentiveness, adaptability, etc. But more importantly, he has an insane level of knowledge and wisdom that I’ve never come across before in any other music teacher (including in professional music schools). The fundamental ideas and techniques that I’ve been learning from him have completely elevated my skill and interest in the guitar, and music in general. I’ve never considered myself particularly musically-inclined, but now I can envision a future where I’m an actual talented, respected bass player (if I practice, of course). To me, he’s a very inspiring teacher and I’m super grateful to have found him.

I’m an amateur bass player who’s always wanted to write my own songs but never knew how. Wes has helped me over the past 6 months or so understand songwriting and music as a whole far better than any other teacher I’ve had. He’s even really impacted how I listen to music.
