James was fast, efficient, and solved every issue I had -- including coming up with ways to solve problems as they arose. He was very responsive -- i'm just now getting responses from people asking me to send them what i need and yet he finished the work 7 hours ago. He was careful, took the time to do the project right and didn't let obstacles slow him down. I would definitely use him again, and his contractor experience is a great help to whatever he was doing...he gets the job done!

If Thumbtack allows users to more stars, I would grade Maha for 10/10! Before our project started, we interviewed almost 20 contractors and Maha is the only one provided the professional in-depth site analysis with very detailed bidding with all items broken down into material and labor as well as the amazing schedule analysis (and we did have the project finished prior to the original projection date). Thru out he entire project process, Houman (owner of Maha) was showing all his professionalism into all the detail and he was on-site everyday working with his crew, providing prompt update and honest suggestion in all area. He also provided very helpful weekly progress summary that help me to show to my management for the update. The entire crew was all professional, friendly, and showing their care to the premise owner every moment. Communication is 10/10 as well. At the end of the project, I noticed some additional item that I omitted earlier, and Houman was able to help me on those as well altho he didn't have to, all respect for that. I definitely will come back to Maha again if I have another project coming, also recommend them to anyone looking for professional and sincere designer/contractor.

Jamie was great, he responded immediately and was able to meet the next morning. He installed our front door and had to fix other problems from a previous contractor. He did an amazing job and we won’t hesitate to call him on my next phase of construction.

Excel Construction demolished and remodeled several parts at our house. They did our kitchen, two bathrooms and 2 fireplaces (1 at the formal living room and the second one at our master bedroom). While the people were working at the house they always tried as much as they could to keep the house clean and well organized. This was one of the main things that we truly loved to see because we were living at the house during the remodeling. The kitchen and bathrooms were demolished completely while we were able to use other parts of the house and Eyal who managed this entire work, helped us in all the purchased, communicated with us on a daily basis and each Friday, he gave us a detailed progress report that kept us in the loop of the work. Our home is a lot more than the way we thought or imagined it will become and all of it is definitely because the people that were involved at our house. The office staff were really detailed and professional in regards to all the documents, paperwork, payments etc… She made sure to update us with any news or issues with her department in regards to our remodeling project. The guys who did the actual work (including several sub-contractors), always worked hard and they made sure that everything will fit perfectly and without any mistakes. They were polite, quite, respectful and professional. The finish project is stunning. We strongly recommend them to anyone!

Joey was very understanding of the small job/low budget where other contractors were quoting 2-3x. He had one of his men, Milan, come and install cork underlay with click hardwood. Initially I was quoted $350, but it became $400 upon arrival - not a big deal, but something to consider if you’re shoestring and ran out of money on a build as I did. Milan did a pretty great job overall, very friendly and speedy. In this circumstance precision near the walls didn’t concern me as I built floor to ceiling acoustic panels, however I was a bit concerned about the lack of spacers and some not so “straight” cuts. Also, there was a misunderstanding regarding the threshold and the point the floor was to be brought up to. Luckily, after some schedule conflict, Joey was able to get him back out to correct the mistake. Overall the floor looks great, feel solid thus far, no bowing or splits, so I think it’ll hold up. The floor style itself looks spectacular. Overall I’d give them a B+

Golden Oaks Kitchen, Bath and Flooring company was our contractor to do all repairs on our home damages caused by water damage that happened to our home due to water leakage which was started from second floor bath room and flooded to 1st. floor damaging, dray walls, cabinets, laminates +++ .. at 1st. and second floors. This company started their restoration and repair works the day after we signed the contract. Their crew were very professional in their fields of repair and replacement, they were trying their best to satisfy us. Any time that we had comments for adding more repair at one area or paint the areas in a color to match other paints , they were not arguing that and wanted us to be happy with what we need and what they did for us. They were always on time and also helped us to deliver new cabinets, toilets ++++. Overall everything was done on a very smooth way, on time and the way that we wanted to be done.

Stop your search for a Handyman here. You’ve found him. I hired Aaron to assist in mounting a bathroom cabinet to my wall. Why might seems like a simple task is deceiving. My walls are a mix of cement, cinderblock and brick. Two previous handymen were not able to get the job done (one even breaking MY drill bits trying to get into brick. All they succeeded in doing was staining my Ethan Allen damask tufted chair with PERMANENT red dust). Of course I made Aaron aware of the wall composition in advance of the job. He assured me immediately not to worry. His drill goes through concrete “like butter”. I was impressed with Aaron before he even stepped foot in my home. Scheduling the job was easy. Aaron was flexible and quick to respond to my inquiries. He also answered questions I may have posed into the evening. Once at 10pm. I did not know until he was working in my home he had a baby at home. Impressive on TWO counts if you ask me. When Aaron arrived there was a notable difference from previous handymen I had hired. I’m new to town had had needed some assistance in multiple areas. Too bad I found Aaron so late. He arrived with what I can only describe as a traveling workbench. This wasn’t just a toolbox and a drill. It was multiple boxes with every kind of tool, anchor, screw, nail, rope, etc., you name it, that he could possibly need. When I commented on how prepared he was his response was simply; “well it’s my job.” As soon as he began working it was clear that I scored a HIGHLY SKILLED professional with EXTENSIVE knowledge in his field. He sought nothing less than perfection when it came to mounting, not just the medicine cabinet, but all of my mirrors and heavy frames. The precision he used when measuring. Double and triple-checking his work so that it was certain to be aesthetically pleasing. And his suggestions and trouble-shooting on other items that were not on the docket for that day were right on point. Aaron worked quickly and efficiently without compromising excellence. And his rates are extremely fair for the quality of craftsmanship received. I even commented that he was worth more. To which he said, “if I could do it for free, I would. You’ve had a lot of false starts. But I have a baby.” I appreciated that comment because I approach my work the same way. I love it and would also do it for free if I didn’t have the bills to pay. At the end of the day, when someone loves their job, and they have the skill, they will excel. They will be the best option over all other options. I tried to pay him more than he requested, he refused the money. Finally, as a single woman I was extremely comfortable having Aaron in my home. He had a great, calming energy. I’m certain I will have him back and I can tell you if I needed to leave I would never be concerned about leaving him in my home alone, even leaving him alone in my home with my precious pup. There are a lot of apps out there. A lot of service providers. A lot of people who now make side gigs their main gigs and they’re simply unqualified. Not Aaron. He is absolutely A+ talent and a true, true professional. I am very fortunate to have chosen Aaron to assist me with my mounting projects, as I now have a go-to professional in my new city who can take care of my household needs. And not just take care of those needs, but deliver superior results. Thank you Aaron, people have been unable to stop complimenting the mounted artwork, mirrors and cabinet. And my mind is truly at ease knowing that in a new city where I know few people, if I need help I can count on you. I truly appreciate your hard work! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Thank you Cabrera's Electrical. We have had so much work done on our home, yet when our private contractor retired, we did not know what to do. Cabrera's had the most professional response online. We had (2) large ceiling fans to be installed, and needed electrical re-wiring of the (2) wall switches that would be used. His quote was what our retired contractor told us it should be. Our fans and new electrical are perfect. I plan on using him again for other projects that we have. We have already referred him to friends of ours. It's such a relief to find somebody who cares about your home, as much as you do.

The Egal Construction team was one of the most down-to-earth, honest contractors I've ever hired for a job in our office building. When we ran into an issue, they jumped on fixing it in an impossibly timely manner. Five stars, 10/10, all of the accolades I can give. Hire these guys!

Be very careful with this Guy. I let Joe into my house to work on my bathroom, and he never finished the job. He tries to act all friendly with you, constantly asking for money to finish the job. I gave him some cash upfront before the job was finished; huge mistake. From that point, Joe never returned. Excuse after excuse after excuse. Very frustrated and disappointed in the service I received. I would definitely NOT RECOMMEND

Oscar Morales our draftsman has been very helpful on our home remodel. He is extremely knowledgeable and created architectural plans for us to submit our project to the City as owner/builder. His fees are very fair. He is a team player who works well with others, seeks out good resources, and has helped us to move forward on our project in a timely manner. I would highly recommend Oscar for your project.

Ranj more than met my highest expectations. She designed a jungle theme nursery and it turned out fantastic. Our little one will definitively enjoy his room for years to come. She was flexible with my demanding schedule and the contractors that worked with her were equally as professional and flexible. I would recommend her without reservation.

Excellent service!I highly recommend Ranbay Construction for home or commercial renovations. The minute I met Brad I knew he was the best! My house and office needed a complete renovation and Brad walked me through the process, helped me pick out materials and finished the job on time! He laid out several options in a clear, no-pressure manner, and was extremely communicative throughout the process. His team showed up on time on every appointment, and they completed the work in the agreed upon time period. The clean up was excellent. They are very hard-working, helpful with questions and concerns, and trustworthy. I did a lot of research and interviews with multiple contractors before picking them. Brad was always available to answer my questions and I can't say enough about his company! I'm very satisfied with the overall experience I had with this company and would use them again without hesitation.

Could not be happier with this company. They went above and beyond. We had some water damage to our home and needed a contractor ASAP. GIM came out to my property and assessed the situation right away. They provided me with an estimate and got started right away. My roof needed to be repaired and and I decided to also to some interior renovations. I had my kitchen re done with a modern finish and opened up a wall to give it a bigger feel. There architect supplied me with drawings ahead of time to show how it would look. At the end they put solar on the roof and now I am saving money on my energy bill. Thank you for all the hard work!

I recently hired Shay and his crew to renovate the kitchen and hardwood floors throughout my house. This was undoubtedly the best experience with a contractor I have had to date. From the beginning and throughout the process he was quickly responsive to any questions or concerns I had. We did high end renovation with custom cabinets. They handled every aspect of the renovation with meticulous care, and the results prove it. The crew is professional. The head worker Iseia is extraordinarily talented and very pleasant to deal with. Expo Home is not the cheapest, but it's worth the price and wait to have excellence.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
