Introduction: Hi! I've been teaching yoga to private clients here in LA for over 15 years and practicing massage for 10. In yoga, my teaching style is very focused on safety and proper form using easy-to-understand language. I specialize in working with beginning level students, those with injuries and chronic pain, and older clients. I also teach anatomy and physiology workshops to other yoga teachers in training. As a certified massage therapist, I specialize in deep tissue, trigger point for pain management and Swedish. As part of our work together, I can also teach you effective self-massage techniques as well as tailor short yoga sequences for you to do between our sessions to stay pain-free, strong and flexible. You can find more reviews of my work on Yelp under "Balance Work Yoga and Massage".

Mark is an excellent yoga teacher and his perspicuous instruction makes yoga and the poses seem effortless. And his meticulous attention to your body limitations and injuries are well addressed in both his yoga classes and massage sessions. I've attended all three of his yoga retreats - Death Valley (twice) and Santa Margarita and all have been divine and have always left me refreshed, renewed and with a deeper sense of the benefits of yoga. I recommend the retreats to anyone who is both a novice and advanced yoga practitioner. Additionally, I have attended his workshops on Trigger Point Massage and have obtained knowledge on how to address my own body limitations due to injury or stress and have gained perspective on how wondrous the body is. Mark is an all around excellent healer and yogi.

Mark is a blessing in my life! I have known him for many years and have nothing but the best to say about him. I first encountered him as a novice student in his yoga classes. In this context, I found him to be patient, purposeful, and very calming. Given chronic neck problems and spine surgery, I also turned to Mark for massage and body work; he has really made a huge difference in my recovery. More than any other massage therapist I have encountered, Mark wants to understand the underlying body issue and is willing to try different approaches to get to the root issue. In other words, for Mark it's not just about massaging a knot for it to simply return; he wants to understand why that knot is appearing in the first place and educate me so I can avoid a similar problem in the future. To top this off, Mark is a genuinely good person with a caring soul such that when I leave him I feel better physically AND emotionally! I tell Mark that he is never allowed to leave here as he is irreplaceable!

I started practicing yoga 3 years ago to rehabilitate an injury to my c5 vertebra; since then, Mark has become a crucial part of of my yoga practice. I trust his skill and knowledge with my injury or any other issue in my body as much as any (and more than most) of the health care professionals I've ever seen, including orthopedists and physical therapists. I've mostly worked with him at Liberation Yoga, but also one-on-one at his studio. He is basically what I would make with a magic wand if he didn't exist: a yoga teacher with impeccable technique, combined with a massage therapist with exhaustive knowledge of anatomy and kinesiology. And to top it all off, he really couldn't be a lovelier person! Even though now I regularly take classes in which we practice fancy arm balances and hold warrior 3 for five breaths longer than I want to, I still try to make it to Mark's class at least 3 times a week. I feel that the more I succeed in incorporating the alignment and body integrity from Mark's teaching into all the vinyasa classes I take, the more I not only strengthen my body but also keep it safe. Another of Mark's regulars and I often joke that when we go to enough of his classes a week, we can actually hear his voice in our heads cheering us on to that stronger, more open version of poses while taking other yoga classes. When I skip his classes, this internal voice can run low, which I call "running low on Mark," in which case it is imperative to get to a class of his as soon as possible, to "top off." Moreover, I have personally had at least 4 (count them, 4) clouds-parting-doves-flying-into-the-sky-and-voices-from-heavenly-hosts-type yoga revelations (which I have never had with ANY other teacher) in Mark's classes, wherein I suddenly understood, with lightning clarity, a life-changing truth about a yoga pose. I won't tell you what those revelations ARE: you have to go to Mark's class yourself. I WILL say that the enlightenment that I received of these Yoga Mysteries relate to tadasana, plank, down dog, and warrior 3. It was magic. If you want to empower yourself to strengthen and heal your body, you are in safe hands with Mark.

Mark is a terrific yoga teacher and healer, and a beautiful person. I have been working with him on an individual basis for more than four years. He has helped me reduce discomfort from a persistent frozen shoulder through his knowledge of anatomy and effective trigger point work. Without a doubt, my work with Mark has significantly improved my range of motion. I am grateful to know him and be working with him! -Kristen
