David came to our place on time and coordination was smooth too. He helped me bring the new toilet to the third floor. Most of the installation went smooth, except the seat design was not good and we ended trying to figure out why it's still moving when the bolts were tight. He was patient enough to try few different time by unscrewing and putting back the entire seat. My current water supply line was short, although he tried really hard use the current one, it didn't fit. Fortunately, he had one on him and he used that one instead ($5). He also came back all the way from the garage (we're on third floor), to make sure assure that the new water level setting was to my liking, when I shared that flush didn't perform as expected. Unfortunately his truck didn't clear my garage clearance, so he had to haul away the old toilet by hand (super heavy as you can imagine) across a long condo garage. Solid guy, great attitude.

Bill is a stand-up guy - he gave me an initial quote for my leaking bath tub, which I felt was high, so I asked him to come by and give an accurate estimate. He came the next day, and quickly explained that he was seeing other problems like the marble floors being uneven in color so an acid wash was included in the quote. After I explained I wasn't interested in that part, just the leaking tub, he gave me a very reasonable estimate. The problem we had in essence was a missing piece- he and I problem solved how we could fix the problem without the missing piece. Lots of ideas were flying around and he was open to trying out many things. We finally flipped the tub and took out the hose to implement one of the ideas and luckily the missing piece was still stuck there. That meant that we could have a full fix - and Bill did an awesome job in fixing it. I finally paid him more than he had asked for, which I felt was fair. It felt like I was doing a project with a buddy rather than a contractor. Bill was very easy going - would recommend him highly for future jobs.

Tony was the first to respond to my inquiry about painting the outside of my cottage. He came over the next day to evaluate the job. We easily agreed on a price for the whole job, and came to an understanding that it needed to be completed in the next two weeks. Despite some rain, which complicated the schedule, Tony and his team arrived on time, powerwashed the house, went above and beyond and repaired some rotting areas, did an excellent painting job, cleaned up thoroughly and put everything back as requested. I will definately use Tony's Handyman Services again for this, and for other projects. My sense is Tony is quite competent and can do carpentry, stonework, floors, fenches, irrigation systems -- pretty much anything I might need. Thanks Tony!

I needed a 220 outlet installed for a new range. David responded right away, came early to ensure the project was done before the new range arrived, and did an outstanding job installing the outlet. He also had the foresight to install a floor board to support the new range. Later, that day, when the range was delivered, it didn't fit into the space because the old tile and concrete were too thick. David came back and power-sanded the protruding concrete until the new range fit the opening. David is responsive, kind, multi-talented, punctual, and professional. I'll hire him again, for sure!

I highly recommend Fredy for any of your handyman needs. I hired him for a small drywall project but i could see he had many skills so I had him to numerous projects: wood floor sanding and staining, crown moulding and baseboard install, framing, wallpaper, plumbing, welding, tile repair, painting, furniture building, building a fence, and finish carpentry. I am probably missing some things! I worked with numerous other tradesman before I found Fredy on Thumbtack, and I found the quality and reliability of others slipped over time, but not Fredy! He continued to maintain a high level of customer service throughout the numerous projects. He always asks if I'm happy, and replies by saying "I'm not happy if you're not happy!" And I could tell he meant it. I also found his level of ethics to be very high and his pricing very fair. He is an upbeat personality which is also a pleasure to work with. I will continue to use Fredy for all my handyman needs in my home and business.

Richard and crew went beyond expectations when pressure washing my brown 25 year old cement tile roof that had yellowed over time. The end result was a near new looking light brown roof again. The second job involved a backyard deck pressure wash, secure loose boards, seal cracks in vertical posts, then prime and paint all. Again the result was proffesional and visually pleasing. I found Richard very knowledgeable, easy to work with, and recommend him highly.

I have been a Thumbtack user for many years and it is very rare to see a service provider who receives 5 stars and raving reviews consistently from his customers. Jack and his crew are one of the rare breeds. Jack was very responsive in providing a quote (which was very reasonable and comparable to the market rates) online and was followed up by a visit in person. He showed up on time (not a minute late) and very courteous and professional in offering his opinions and sharing his views on the flooring. He also offered a great advice in flooring material, ways that he can install and how he can finish (including baseboards). I have done a few remodeling projects in my properties and by far, Jack was the best to work with among all contractors that I have dealt with, including the general contractors. From start to finish, he was professional through and through and did not miss a single inch of the floor. It was finished in time and on schedule. Every day, he made time to talk with me to report on the progress, what his crew would be doing the following day and what I should expect. It was such a pleasant experience as Jack let me have the sense of control while the project is on going and reassured that the final product, the flooring, would be a beautiful piece of art. Indeed, my floor turned out to be the best I have seen so far. I am very pleased with Jack's craftsmanship and his crew and would not hesitate to recommend his work to anyone for his impeccable work. Floors are the foundation of any home, and Jack is an artist to create the right piece for each of his customer

Jordie and Paul did a fantastic job cleaning my house, a difficult job since it's a log home and every log from the floor to the 20 foot ceiling needed dusting. Paul also fixed a plumbing problem and installed a dishwasher for us. Their prices are quite reasonable and fair for the excellent value received. I'm very pleased and will continue to use their services. I can highly recommend them to others in the community who need help with cleaning, maintenance, and repairs in the house!

I have access to flooring at wholesale prices. I have 12 years of experience and have installed hundreds of custom floors here in the South Bay. I have top-quality hardwood in five species/colors that I can install for $5.50 a sq. foot. That includes materials and labor. I have plenty of colors and styles to choose from. I also have seven colors of top quality, and 12.3-mm laminate for $3.25 is installed. There are no hidden fees like you may encounter with other people or places that offer these services. I clean up and haul the trash away. Call for a free estimate and ask for Robert. I will come to your house with samples of my products. If I don't answer, please leave voice mail, and I will return your call in a timely manner.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
