In March 2017, I was stuck in my weight loss efforts despite limiting my calories and exercise efforts. Shedding 30+ pounds had been a struggle for years – my weight would yo-yo; sometimes being able to lose a few pounds with deprivation, but the pounds always returned once I started eating again. I was also experiencing fairly severe health annoyances like constant watery eyes and significant swelling in my knees – but my focus was really not on those things; it was on wanting to lose weight. Convinced that my metabolism was permanently stifled due to my age and years of yo-yo dieting (I am 55 years old), I was ready to give up and accept the way I looked and felt as my unfortunate reality. My husband thankfully encouraged me to see a Dietician/Nutritionist, and I found Donna online. My first appointment with Donna was in late March. We decided that I would do a 2 week cleanse (Detox) to rid my body of toxins – it was excruciating (but worth it!), proof that my body was full of bad things. I then went through testing for the LEAP program. The results were very interesting – things I had been eating for years in my efforts to lose weight – like certain fruits, garbanzo beans, cabbage, corn, chicken, and beef – and things like basil, garlic, and peanuts – were identified as intolerances for me. Donna explained that these foods led to inflammation and worked against my weight loss efforts. As well, consumption of these foods was causing/aggravating the other health symptoms I was experiencing. Fast forward to six months later, and while I have not been perfect, I am over halfway to my weight loss goal! Thanks to Donna and the LEAP protocol, I have lost about 20 pounds, the swelling in my knees is noticeably reduced, and my eyes are only occasionally mildly watery. My physical and mental health has improved, and I am aware of how I feel when eating certain foods to the point that I embarked on a 10-week program to give up sugar on August 1st. One of the best things about the LEAP program is that it is not a Diet – this is a Lifestyle Change which I will be able to maintain. I highly recommend Donna and the programs she uses to others struggling with health issues, including the inability to lose weight. It is amazing how much what we ingest affects our health, and it’s not just avoiding those foods we know we shouldn’t eat! I was eating hummus and grapefruit regularly in my prior weight loss efforts, and it turns out those so-called health foods were working against me. This program has been life changing for me, and I am so appreciative for Donna and her true concern about my health.

Christa, and her services, are all you need for holistic wellness. As a massage therapist she integrates her extensive knowledge of anatomy with intuition, to create the massage you need for healing, relaxation, or rehab. As a nutritionist, she gives clear advice based on her years of research and strong listening to your goals and or symptoms. She also connects with the emotions that are commonly tied to symptoms like chronic pain, chronic fatigue, injury, illness, and poor health. Christa tells you what you need to hear, without judgement, and with compassion and authenticity. She has been a life changer for me, first supporting me in cutting gluten out of my diet, and then cutting out sugar. Without her, I wouldn't have known why I should, beloved I could, or known how to- step by step. I can't say enough about her talent, commitment, and passion for helping people to live their healthiest life possible.

I'm new to writing a thumbtack review, but an expert at divining great services from other thumbtack reviewers. So I thought I should finally dip my toe into this world of posting reviews with a person offering services that I strongly believe in... Dev, of OMChef, has touched my life over the past 6 years. I met her through a word of mouth referral as I needed some prepared food while I was nursing my first child and I was hoping to lose some baby weight in the process. She would bring the most beautiful, healthy organic food prepared and packaged with a conscious. She completely educated me on GMO's, food chemistry, environmental awareness of our products and how to best nourish our bodies with the foods we love and some we learn to love. I lost the weight, but not my friendship and knowledge. Our paths crossed again almost 4 yrs later (this past year) when I was diagnosed with Cancer. You would think after eating healthier and paying more attention I wouldn't get cancer at 42. Well I got a really rare sarcoma in my soft tissue of my leg.. This cancer has nothing to do with the food I put in my body. With that said, I knew I wanted to be as clean and green as possible and have the support of Dev to provide nourishing meals for myself and family as I went through Chemo / Radiation / Surgery and recovery. She talked with me before I started this process and informed about what to expect. This was so eye-opening because I sat with the staff nutritionist at the hospital who didn't explain half the things that Dev imparted to me. Dev took on the task to help me and family and I couldn't have been in better hands. She created menus to match my changing taste buds almost the night before a delivery. She created this wonderful little picnic baskets for my long chemo days at the hospital. She would also put together family meals for the days I felt better. Truly, I can't speak more highly of OmChef, Dev, and the support to my recovery.... Please please check out OMChef. She does a host of things: catering private parties, food delivery, cancer patient food support, culinary instruction (great present - gift certificates), shopping / food prep for families and busy professionals. Go to her website you will be thrilled you found her. omchef.com oh by the way, I'm cancer free!

Intuitive Eating is where it is at for me. I believe life is to be enjoyed while being mindful. Lisa has an important message: trust yourself. Find out if you are eating because of hunger or something else. If it is not hunger, one can go to the next step and figure out (not easy) what is it that is bothering them. I found out I eat out of boredom. Now, I try to stop. The only pressure in this work is to listen to your own voice. I hope everyone will do this work. I also, learned by the end of the week the body balances its nutritional intake. Thank you, Lisa.

I sought out Rande's help for my teenage son who struggles with a persistent rash on either side of his nose. She put him on a restricted diet for three months and recommended a Vitamin A protocol to help calm his histamine reaction. Within days of starting the protocol, in combination with the diet, his rash all but disappeared! He is now motivated to stay on the diet and finally is convinced that it matters what he puts in his body. We are so thankful to Rande.

Susan was able to help me understand the importance of good nutrition and develop better eating habits. She put together a personal plan that I could do and then followed through with it to make sure I stayed with it. She was very caring and understanding and I liked that. I was able to loose a little weight, feel more energetic and develope more muscle tone as a result of Susan. She gave me the understanding and motivation I needed to get my health on the right track. Now I'm feeling younger & better with a huge smile on my face.

      About

I am a food lover. I believe it is a healer, a comforter, a confidence builder, and a tool to keep the body healthy & strong. I believe that a lot of issues begin and end with food. A part of loving yourself is feeding yourself good healthy nutritious food. I was trained as a nutritionist at UC Davis and as a cook in the grandmother's kitchen. I marry timeless cooking methods with a scientific approach. I like to talk about food, teach healthy ways to engage with food, and shop for food at different venues. I am non-judgmental, amiable, and very knowledgeable. I am not a believer in diets; I believe in incremental lifestyle changes that make big impacts.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a nutritionist cost?

A nutritionist provides expertise and guidance to help clients with all diet-related health matters, including losing weight, gaining muscle, improving their sports performance, and managing diabetes or high cholesterol. Nutritionists can help people learn to follow special diets in a healthy way, such as becoming vegetarian or vegan or developing a low-sodium or gluten-free eating plan. The average national cost of a nutritionist is $60 to $100. Nutritionists often require an initial consultation with a new client, during which they’ll take a medical history, assess the client’s nutritional needs, and determine the best course of action; this first meeting usually averages $100-$120 for a 45-minute to 90-minute consultation. Subsequent nutritional counseling sessions generally cost less, ranging from an average of $45 for a half-hour session to $60-$90 for a one-hour session. Like many professional service providers, nutritionists may offer discounts through package pricing. For instance, a one-month package with two sessions and email support costs an average of $190; a three-month package with three sessions and email support costs an average of $360; and a six-month package with six sessions and email support costs an average of $540.

Are nutritionists covered by health insurance?

Nutrition counseling can be a critical component of good health care, especially for people recently diagnosed with diabetes or high cholesterol who need to adhere to a specific diet. People also meet with nutritionists for help developing a healthy vegetarian or vegan diet, developing an eating plan to lose weight or gain muscle, or improving their sports performance by changing their diet. Nutritionists may be covered by health insurance depending on your reason for meeting with them. Nutrition counseling is more likely to be covered if it is part of a doctor-prescribed treatment for a particular medical condition, such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure or coronary heart disease. For example, Medicare covers medical nutrition therapy services only for people diagnosed with diabetes or kidney disease, as long as they get a referral from their doctor. Also, insurance providers more often cover nutrition visits if the patient has been referred to a registered dietitian within the carrier’s network of providers. Insurance plans vary greatly, so research your benefits before visiting a nutritionist.
