Lisa came to our family house rental in Palm Springs and did couples massages for my entire family for 5 hours. Every single one of us (7 people total) LOVED our massages. With family members from DC, NYC and LA, everyone thinks they know the best spa with the best services. With that said, Lisa lived up to our expectations and more. She is very friendly, outgoing and accommodating to your needs. I can't wait to hire her again. BOOK HER!!

Excellent massage! Highly recommend Cedric for anyone seeking a full body professional massage. He brought all the equipment one would normal have in any high end spa to the comfort of my own home which is priceless. I was skeptical about a guy masseuse at first but Cedric is so professional anyone would feel comfortable.

I went to John's house which was a little weird for me, but my worry was unfounded. John was friendly and the message room was similar to those at any spa. He is very professional and definitely can do the deep tissue massage which my achy back needs regularly. I will be a return customer for sure. Thanks John!

Chad's style of massage was perfect for what I needed. I have been having back and neck problems for a while now and he intuitively knew where he needed to focus on without me even telling him where it hurt the most. He covered all the major and minor muscle groups and did so at the perfect level of pressure for me. I need a 10 out of 10 pressure-wise and he fulfilled that and more. He's is the first masseur I have ever had who was able to do that, so I was pleasantly surprised. His space is clean and well put together. His music was nice and relaxing. The hot towels he had were amazing. I felt like I was at a high-end spa. I will definitely be back for more.

After my appointment with Jai the other day I felt like I should write a review, especially since for some inexplicable reason no one else has done so yet. Having had my share of massages (some of them from guys on this site), I have to say he was unequivocally the best masseuse I have encountered. Setting up the appointment was easy, Jai asked if there were any areas he should focus on, as well as my preference for style of massage, which I pretty much left up to him. He was able to fit me in the next day. No concerns about the location, he lives in a gated community in a good area, and parking was easy. Jai met me at the door and immediately made me feel welcome, the inside of the house was clean and set up with all the spa accoutrements. We chatted for a few minutes, he made sure he was clear on any requests I had and then we got into it. The massage table was heated (if you haven't experienced a heated table...holy crap), and I could immediately tell he knew exactly what he was doing. The massage itself was fantastic. I booked him for 90 minutes so I got a little bit of everything. At my request he focused a lot of time on my back, which was great, but he still left plenty of time to hit all the other spots. Throughout the massage he would check to make sure the pressure was right, and ask about certain areas he noticed tightness in to make sure he treated them properly. Jai has a very good read on the human body, pointing out and asking about things I wasn't even aware of. In addition, he also did a brief hot stone massage, which I had never experienced before, but once he started I didn't want it to end. From my back to my feet to my neck to my scalp, everything felt 100x better when he was done (and I have to say the whole time I kept hoping my 90 minutes wouldn't end). I will absolutely be making another appointment with Jai, and if you're looking for a fantastic mas

I worked with Shellsea for 2 years. I managed the day spa we worked at. Shellsea is very professional, knowledgable of the human anatomy and knows all the technical things about massage but Shellsea goes far beyond that. Shellsea cares for her clients and their general well being. She is concerned not only about the body feeling good but also the mind and the the spirit, as she takes a very zen approach to her work. Not only have I had the pleasure of working with her but I have had the pleasure of getting on her table on several occasions. Sometimes life can get complicated and stressful and Shellsea has the hands that make all of lifes worries melt away and back problems be gone! Her hands move so fluidly, her strokes can be firm and hard or soft and soothing, depending on how your feeling. Shellsea always talks with clients first and asks questions about what's been going on with you and your body so she can do the best job possible! I would highly recommend her as I trust no one else to take care of my massage needs.

My daughter-in-law and I had a fabulous massage. Suzie was here on time and was a pleasure to work with. It was so nice to have this service in home instead of having to travel to a location. Susie brought everything, including the soothing spa music.

Stephanie has outstanding technique and was able to really work on those tight spots. Now the stress that I had been holding has been released, and I feel relaxed. After speaking with her, it is clear she brings a wealth of experience to the massage table. She doesn't disappoint! I had medium-firm pressure applied and it was perfect, head to toe. She also brings soothing music, a comfortable and sturdy table, lotions and salves with aromatherapy essential oils to calm your soul. To be honest, I was delightfully surprised by how spa-like and professional the time was. And the best part is that I am now relaxing in the comfort of my own home, drinking a lovely cup of tea. Looking forward to my next massage with Stephanie.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a facial?

A facial is a restorative cosmetic treatment for the skin on your face. Facials can be performed by a licensed cosmetician, esthetician, dermatologist or other qualified provider. Spas,  medi-spas and other skin care centers offer facials. Most offer different types of facials that address the most pressing skin care needs such aging, dryness, sagging, pigmentation, etc.

The national average cost for a facial is $60-$80. More complex facials, such as microdermabrasion or chemical peel, will cost more, as will services provided by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. The products used can also affect the cost of your facial; high-end creams and serums will likely result in a higher cost. For most non-medical facials, the practitioner will perform a skin assessment, determining your skin type and learning about your lifestyle, diet and skin care concerns. Then the facialist will cleanse and exfoliate the skin, extract any blackheads and clear clogged pores, give a facial massage, apply a treatment mask and then apply moisturizers. Typically facials are relaxing and restorative, leaving your skin clear and dewy.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

Which facial is best?

The wide variety of names, methods, techniques and technologies for facials can be confusing. The best facial for you depends on your skin care needs. If you’re aging and want to address wrinkles and sun spots, you may want a chemical peel, while for acne you may want a deep pore cleansing treatment. Consulting with a licensed esthetician, cosmetologist or dermatologist will help guide your choice. Skin care professionals specialize in assessing your skin and determining which course of treatment will help you achieve your goals. Here is a basic overview of the best facials for different outcomes:

  • Reduce wrinkles: A chemical peel can help stimulate skin cell turnover, creating a fresh new layer thanks to the salicylic or glycolic acids. It’s important to work with an experienced professional when getting a chemical peel so you choose the right level for your skin type.
  • Prevent acne: Enzyme facials or LED facials help battle acne breakouts.
  • Smooth skin tone: Microdermabrasion facials are done using a small tool that polishes off your dead skin cells to reveal a fresh layer of skin underneath.
  • Relax and rejuvenate: A traditional European facial often features warm steamed towels, a facial massage, deep skin cleansing and exfoliation, extractions (as desired), face masks, and applications of serums and moisturizers to leave your skin refreshed and you feeling great.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.

What is included in a facial?

There are many types of facials you can receive based on your skincare goals. Pricing for facials will vary based on the skin care provider you see and your geographic location. Facials provided in a medi-spa by a medical doctor or nurse, or at an upscale day spa, will typically have higher average prices, as will facials in more expensive parts of the country.

  • European facial: Typically lasts 60-90 minutes. Includes steaming (often with warmed towels), cleansing and examination of the skin, exfoliation, extraction of blackheads and clearing clogged pores, application of masks specific to the skin’s need (anti-aging, etc.), application of serums and moisturizers, and massage.
  • Microdermabrasion: 30-90 minutes. Microdermabrasion sloughs off the dead skin on the surface level, revealing brighter skin underneath. The practitioner uses a small, motorized tool that polishes your skin with a diamond tip or stream of very fine crystals. Usually the treatment is preceded by a thorough cleansing. After the microdermabrasion, the practitioner cleans away any remaining dead skin, and then applies a hydrating mask or moisturizers.
  • Back facial: About 60 minutes. Includes a thorough cleansing, exfoliation, extraction of blackheads and clearing of clogged pores, an acne-fighting mask, and mini-massage to keep the skin on the back clear and acne-free.
  • Gentleman’s facial: 50-75 minutes. Treats areas that most affect men. Includes cleansing, assessment of skin type, exfoliation and extraction to address razor burn or ingrown facial hairs, a hydrating mask, and a facial massage followed with moisturizer.
  • Jessner’s peel: 30 minutes. This is a light chemical peel that removes the surface layer of the skin to create a smoother look and feel.
    • More powerful peels are also available, typically at a higher cost.
