We are about to celebrate or 7th anniversary but I can still remember the day like it was yesterday! Mike was very helpful and tailored the premarital counseling to our lifestyle. He listened to us when we asked to keep the ceremony short and sweet. Best of all, he incorporated humorous and meaningful statements that kept our guests interested. If he stilled lived in WA I’d recommend him to all my friends up here.

Murray was very experienced and professional with helping my husband and I get a better understanding of one another. Our relationship was strained over the course of several disagreements on key topics, but Murray helped provide us with some simple but powerful tools in order to work out our problems as a couple. His guidance and fair approach made sure we were both comfortable in speaking our mind. We were able to rebuild trust and repair the damaged foundation of our marriage at the end of Murray's counseling sessions. We would not hesitate to recommend him to a close friend if we saw they were having similar issues.

So far, I've met Charlie for a counseling session 2 times, and will continue, and although Charlie does a lot of weddings, he also counsels. I am seeing him for grief counseling on the loss of my precious husband. I find Charlie sincere, authentic in his faith, good listener, empathetic and easy to talk with. He prayerfully considers his suggestions offered to me. I am hopeful to believe he prays for me and my family to become strengthened, encouraged, and comforted as well. Really appreciate him.

i worked with Jim ,as a volunteer ,for years in a ministry at mariners church in California . I learned a lot from Jim as I was privileged to have opportunities to be with him as he counseled men and women . It was unbelievable to watch Jim be led by the Holy Spirit as he counseled hard to describe but a wonderful memory . Jim taught so many of us in this ministry to be healthy in our " helping others" Jim had a class where he showed parents how to have tough love with their children that were on drugs. Jim also had the volunteers in his ministry go through a 12 step spiritual journey. Jim had men and women have an amazing chance to be trained by John Townsend and Henry Cloud to be peer counsellors something I would have paid hundreds of dollars to do he brought in gifted professional counsellors to serve as guides for the peer counseling ministry many many hurting people at that church were helped free of charge because of his vision and trainings. I'm thankful for the time I had serving with Jim at Mariners church 9 wonderful years. Thanks to God and u too Jim !!!!

We worked extensively with Pastor Eddie for our premarital counseling. He made us realized that the "engagement" period of a relationship isn't just meant to plan a wedding, it's more importantly meant to plan for your marriage. He equipped us both with the essential tools needed for marriage and for a lifetime of agape love. He covers everything with the couple so you are entering this marriage with no surprises. You review everything from fair fighting, communication, finances, parenting, etc. and how imperative it is to keep God at the center of your life and your marriage. Anyone we talk to who is looking to get engaged or is engaged, we encourage them to definitely do premarital counseling and to contact Pastor Eddie.

The professional advice given me by Deborah Vinall has proved invaluable on many different occasions in my work and ministry with troubled youth and young adults. She demonstrates a keen insight, empathy, and compassion into the complexities of the human experience. Her gentle understanding of the pain and suffering that leads to addictions, cycles of trauma and abuse, balanced with wise goadings towards boundaries and reclaiming ownership of ones life and actions have modeled a beautiful spirit of cooperation and non-judgemental support. Deborah Vinall clearly exudes the maxim of Tamar Counselling Services : "reclaiming wholeness", as she herself creates safe space for persons in any stage of healing to begin their journey towards doing just that!

For me the most exciting thing about my experience with Revelation Counseling is that I am in a completely different place than when I started! Coming to revelation counseling has been one of the best decisions I've ever made for my mental, emotional and overall health. I know that the skills I've learned will last beyond the counseling and will help me get closer to my future and my best self.

Randy Moraitis has been my coach and a friend for the past five or six years. As the director of operations in the organization, I was privileged to work with him and found him to have insight and wisdom needed for the position that I was in. Since leaving that organization, I have sought Randy out a number of times to assist me in situations that I had not encountered before and have always appreciate his insight and suggestions. Randy is an individual who will go above and beyond where many others would not. Randy takes the time to listen and understand where someone is needing change and in those confidential moments will guide that person to see the strengths they have and how to move in the direction they want to go. Randy is intelligent not only in the sense of his training but in his life experience as well and as such has helped me and others, to navigate the transition that was needed. From the very first conversation an individual will feel comfortable with Randy and will feel empowered to take the next indicated step necessary for the goal that is desired. Randy is an incredibly professional and skilled coach dedicated to helping people create the lives that they want. As he very well knows, no two individuals will travel the same road and through his use of questions, insight, perspective and authenthic listening skills he has helped me, and others, to answer difficult questions that I could not answer on my own. Randy’s straightforward approach is direct, professional and empowering. I would highly recommend him to anyone who is looking to remove the obstacles and find direction on how to move forward.

    About

Are you worried about your child or teenager? Is he or she struggling socially or academically? Does he isolate in his room with the door shut, or cry more than you would expect? Growing up can be tough these days, and some kids and teens need just a little bit of extra guidance to help them through these years. This is where I can help. I have experience working as a school-based counselor as well as with challenging populations such as children with behavioral issues and on the autism spectrum. I use behavioral modification techniques to help your child improve on social skills, academic struggles, anxiety, overcoming bullying, and coping with major changes in the family, including divorce or any other significant loss such as that of a pet. I am a registered marriage and family therapist intern with a master's degree in clinical psychology from Pepperdine University. I may be younger than many of the other therapists you have looked into, but that is exactly the reason why I would be a great choice for your child or adolescent. My age helps me relate to and understand your child, which creates a better counseling environment. I am also fluent in Russian. I am available weekday evenings and weekends.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

    • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
    • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
    • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
    • Overcoming addictions.
    • Managing chronic illness.
    • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

    • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
    • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
    • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
    • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
    • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
    • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
    • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
    • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
    • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
    • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
    • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
    • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
    • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
    • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
    • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
    • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
    • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
    • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
    • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

    How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
