I have been to quite a few counselors in my life and Dr Ira Lake is by the far the most genuine, caring and skilled. He is very professional and smart and helps you figure out how your past affects who you are today. I see him for individual and couples counseling and have taken my 7 yr daughter as well. He is wonderful! I highly recommend him.

I engaged w/Rev Foti as counselor. The course of dialogue and self knowing has helped bring me out of a prolonged depression, and making headway with clearing out old anger issues. His supportive and friendly yet firm approach was and is a great boon to my well=being and connection to life around me.

Brad was there for him when I needed him the most. He was the one who reminded me "SELF LOVE" that gave me the courage to leave my husband who was cheating on me. Brad genuinely cares about me as a person, now just another client of his. He never assumes what is best for me.. he always ask me why I do the things I do... He makes me ponder on a lot of my thoughts and decisions... He never judges.. he is not just a coach.. he is a friend.. he cares and loves people and that is what makes him so successful in what he does... With Brad's help, I was able to put my past behind me and move on with my life.. He shows me that TRUE LOVE is out there.. Just ask the universe for it and it will bring it to you... Brad brought a lot of his life experiences to the table... he is compassionate and empathetic because he speaks and coaches from his personal experiences.. He is real... not some counselors with head knowledge... I highly recommend Brad if you are lost and need to find who you truly are...

So far, I've met Charlie for a counseling session 2 times, and will continue, and although Charlie does a lot of weddings, he also counsels. I am seeing him for grief counseling on the loss of my precious husband. I find Charlie sincere, authentic in his faith, good listener, empathetic and easy to talk with. He prayerfully considers his suggestions offered to me. I am hopeful to believe he prays for me and my family to become strengthened, encouraged, and comforted as well. Really appreciate him.

Gerry has been such a blessing to my marriage. Daily life can get hectic and you can lose connection with your spouse. Small things can seem big and Gerry always has a way of bringing perspective back. And he allows husband and wife to talk and most times answer the questions themselves by talking it out in a safe environment. If needed he will bring clarity and always keeps God's plan for marriage as the blueprint. He is a safe bet if you need help in any type of relationship. He is real and speaks from experience. He has had his own struggles and is still happily married. Which speaks volumes in today's world. If you want honest and sound advice by a man who is lead by God then Gerry would be the counselor for you. Alicia Boaz

Andre & Angela did several months of premarital counseling with my husband & I before our wedding. They were excellent counselors, leading us in talking through a variety of issues pertaining to marriage. They were good listeners and had a lot of wisdom to share. They also made the sessions fun, something that we looked forward to. I appreciate their hearts to serve others through helping them improve their marriage relationships.

I have been meeting with Sydnie for a couple of years now, and she is always very professional and caring. She has a tremendous amount of knowledge about mental, emotional and especially spiritual energy and behavior. When I first came to her, I just wanted help with feeling depressed and unmotivated and she knew exactly how to pinpoint the reason for my feeling depressed and almost right away was able to guide me out of those emotions and into a more joyful state. We have been working ever since on my spiritual being versus my human being and which one is actually in charge. I would highly recommend Sydnie to anyone who needs help understanding their power and how it plays the highest role in your experience of love, joy and peace! She is clearly not here for the money, she truly loves helping people. To keep her prices low, she does not meet in a traditional office, yet it is always professional and quiet.

Pastor Dan provided wonderful and thoughtful guidance when my husband and I got married in 2006. It was reassuring that we were being counseled by someone who is faith-based and could relate to our relationship struggles and offer us ways of continuing to work on and improve our marriage with God as our foundation. The ceremony itself was a beautiful service and Pastor Dan's personalization and presentation made it all the more special. We are truly blessed to have had him officiate for us.

Healing should not take years. I work to help you identify and heal core issues, and develop a gentle practice that can accelerate your healing. Clients I have served have said that my holistic and integrative process has done more for them than other therapies they have tried over the years. Individuals and couples tell me they have been able to identify core issues, and heal by practicing focused, individualized healing techniques. I have found over the past thirty years of helping individual, couples and families that healing occurs quicker and with more lasting results when people learn to develop a practice that is consistent and motivating, and which produces valid results. I also have years of experience working with people who have various developmental disabilities, such as Asperger syndrome, autism, and pervasive developmental disorder.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

      • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
      • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
      • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
      • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
      • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
      • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
      • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
      • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
      • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
      • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
      • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
      • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
      • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
      • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
      • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
      • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
      • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
      • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
      • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

      What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

      • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
      • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
      • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
      • Overcoming addictions.
      • Managing chronic illness.
      • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.

      How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
