Joyee Lin of Thinque has been nothing short of amazing. Professional with results to show. My daughter started working with Joyee a couple of months ago. Within six lessons, my daughter's composite ACT score went from a 28 prior to working with Joyee to a 32. Amazingly, her science score went from a 25 to a 32. Those numbers are the end result of Joyee's professional approach to teaching. During the lesson, Joyee utilizes a number of methods to present the material. It must be said that my daughter took his instruction seriously and worked hard on the material which was provided to her. The result was a good example of team work in which my daughter could receive, in addition to immediate instruction, quick review and understanding after working through the material. Joyee makes it easy to work around a busy lifestyle as he schedules and responds to correspondence promptly. We can't offer him enough praise. Joyee is offering an amazing service and we were so glad to have been referred to him.

Fabian is an excellent Spanish teacher. His lessons are engaging and well paced, but always fun - definitely not all rote memorization. I highly encourage anyone that is interested in learning to speak Spanish to take lessons with Native Tongue: Professional Instruction.

She is the best teacher I have ever encountered in my life. Her step by step approach with so much patience and respect to each student is almost certainly helping his/her not only to improve language skill steadily but also to have the opportunity to get the key of learning with fun. If you develop this fun methods which can be applied to all the other subjects, it should raise the level of learning skill while you are pursuing your career in academic field or not. I guarantee you won’t regret this.

Linda has a lot of experiences in tutoring. Every time I have questions in grammar or pronunciation during lessons, she clarify for me. I am very satisfied with that and I think it's the fastest way to learn. I would recommend her to my friends who want to improve their English.

Miss Marguerite is a great piano teacher. She approaches her music lessons through a variety of techniques and methods that always keeps our daughter engaged. She teaches her music theory, music appreciation, rhythm, play by ear and the ability to read music. She differentiates the needs of each of her students and taps into their styles and preferences. Our daughter has learned a lot under her tutelage.

Whenever I have a high stakes assignment, I take it to Oliver. He never disappoints. Whether its a History DBQ, an English literary analysis, or a letter of recommendation, Oliver makes it better. His analytical mind and command of the language are untouchable.

Dr. Carrie Tamburo is a consummate professional and an extraordinary Spanish teacher. Caring, highly competent, creative, and very approachable with a good sense of humor. Makes Spanish seem very “learnable" - even the more difficult concepts. She inspired a lot of confidence in me. Always incorporates culture in with language and chooses interesting materials. VERY knowledgeable - and fun! I always looked forward to our sessions and my Spanish has improved a lot!

My daughter LOVES her lessons with Weixia! She focuses on making the lessons exciting, and useful. My daughter has learned more conversational Mandarin with Weixia in the past month than she did in 3 years through a local Mandarin after-school program! Highly recommend her : )

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
