I am very impressed with Mike's knowledge of math and with his teaching skills. He explains things clearly and is very patient. My neighbor, Trish, was studying for her CBEST test and was having problems with the math. I referred her to Mike and now she has happily passed her CBEST exam. I would recommend him to anyone looking to improve their math skills.

Joyee Lin at Thinque Prep was the one who helped me get a perfect score on my ACT last year. Since then, he's guided me through a lot of decisions that I needed to make to help me be competitive for college. Certain decisions that I didn't even think would matter, he was able to forewarn me about. He has also been giving me really great ideas to help me with my essay. I'm so happy to have met him and strongly recommend him to anybody who needs help with test prep and college!

It was a simple job. Six grade math. Most tutors either gave us the runaround or just didn't call us back. Eric at elite made sure we were satisfied from the first free trial to the session before my daughters test. Very well done

Miss Jenny is an exceptional teacher! We are very grateful to have found Miss Jenny to tutor our children; age 9 and 11 year old. Both of them have received tutoring from Miss Jenny since 3 years ago and their grades / test scores have improved tremendously right from the beginning. Miss Jenny always display enthusiasm for the subjects she teaches. She knows how to modify the teaching strategies according to the students' levels of comprehension. She is always so encouraging and motivating! Our children love her very much and they enjoy each of their tutoring sessions with Miss Jenny. We highly recommend Miss Jenny as a tutor / teacher to any children from Elementary to High School. Mike & Shirley Morris (Parents of Sebastian & Mia)

I was signed up to take a Kaplan course for GMAT prep and was talking to a co-worker about it when they told me their story. They took one of the same Kaplan courses I was signed up to take and didn't get their desired GMAT score. In their second attempt, they signed up for private tutoring with John Easter, one of Elite Home Tutoring tutors, and their GMAT score improved by over 100 points. After hearing this story, I called to cancel my Kaplan class & signed up with Elite Home Tutoring, with a special request to work with John. During my studies, I decided that I wanted to take the GRE instead of the GMAT. I explained this to my tutor John and to Eric at Elite Home Tutoring and the change was so simple. John is not only skilled in GMAT prep but GRE prep as well. So the only thing that would need to change were the materials. If you're looking for the best resources for test prep I highly recommend Elite Home Tutoring. I have no complaints!

There is no way I would have been as successful on the ACT without Travis. After three previous attempts with the test, his expertise not only helped increase my score to above my original goal, but also helped me regain confidence. He is thorough and methodical without being overwhelming--if anything, he helped me regain a sense of calm as I was studying for and taking the test. He is simply one-of-a-kind!

After being disappointed with an ACT classroom course, I asked my parents if I could look in to private tutoring. I searched Thumbtack and worked with TutorNerds.I loved the fact that the ACT tutoring was tailored to my personal needs. I didn’t waste time on the parts of the test that I already knew. Instead, I was able to focus time on my problem areas. I would definitely recommend TutorNerds to other students like me.

Mary Ellen was an excellent tutor for both my daughter and son. Her ability to connect and adjust her teaching style to their differing personalities was amazing. When she first started working with them, it was mostly strengthening their grammar and writing strategies. She was especially helpful with the literature my daughter had to read for her AP lit class. Having her help them prep for the ACT as well as college essays was the best decision I made!

I hired Gene last summer to help my son get a better grasp on math prior to going back to school. I was not disappointed at all. I had Gene come over twice a week for about 6 weeks or so. By the end my son was ready for 6th grade! The tutoring really helped my son's attitude and confidence going back to school. I asked my son recently if he would like Gene to prep him in July/Aug for 7th grade math and english. He actually said Yes! Gene must be something special if a kid is willing to give up a few of hours each week of his summer vacation for tutoring. Gene is real personable with kids and they definitely like learning from Him.

I worked with Sam Kohli between 2014-2015 in preparation for my ACT examination as well SAT Math II, Biology, and Chemistry Subject Tests prior to applying for college. When I first started with Sam, I did not have the hottest test scores (29 and 30 on the ACT) and was in need for guidance for not only raising my score but, more importantly, gaining valuable test taking strategies that would allow me to perform at my peak when testing day came around. I very much enjoyed my time with Sam: both as a tutor and as a friend. Sam's genuinely friendly, determined, outgoing, and patient personality truly make him an amazing tutor and individual you want to work with. Because of Sam's efforts, I was able to score a 35 on my ACT, 800 on my SAT Chemistry, 790 on my SAT Math II, and 750 on my SAT Biology. I am now attending UCLA as a second year Neuroscience Major with a Biomedical Research Minor as a prospective candidate for applying to medical schools come 2019.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

      What is ACT test prep?

The ACT is a college entrance exam taken by students (typically in their junior year of high school) to determine admission eligibility and merit-based scholarship eligibility. The test may be taken as many times as desired and is not limited to high school juniors. Originally the acronym stood for American College Testing, but now ACT is the stand-alone name. ACT prep is a way for students to strategically prepare for test-taking. ACT prep helps students improve scores, practice taking the test, learn test-taking strategies, and improve material comprehension. Students can get help with ACT prep tutors in one-on-one sessions, via group tutoring lessons, in online self-study programs, or online with a tutor in video calls. The ACT test covers:

      • English
      • Science understanding and reasoning
      • Math
      • Reading
      • Writing essay (optional)

How do you prepare for the ACT?

The ACT is a universally accepted college readiness exam. There are multiple ways to prepare for the exam. One-on-one ACT prep tutoring is one of the most effective ways for students to ready themselves for the test. A tutor who specializes in ACT prep will coach the student on the type of material they can expect while also working specifically with topics that are more challenging for that particular student. Group tutoring sessions are a more cost-effective way to reap the benefits of an ACT prep instructor; a suggestion is to gather a group of four friends or classmates to share the cost. Professional tutors often recommend that test prep begin approximately three months prior to the exam. Cramming — unfortunately — doesn’t provide the same score results as consistent study, test-related homework, and practice exams do. Weekly two-hour learning sessions are what many pro tutors suggest for their college exam prep students. For top test-taking performance, tutors usually provide work throughout the week and the weekly session is used to cement knowledge and address weak areas. Math is a hard topic for most students, so plan accordingly.

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?

Pros recommend planning to spend two to six months for GMAT prep. The test itself is only 3.5 hours long, but your score will have a major effect on what schools grant you admission. If you’d like to be considered for one of the top-tier schools, it’s recommended to score at least a 700. Your goals for your MBA can help drive your GMAT prep. GMAT tutors will guide your study plan and help analyze your strengths and weaknesses. GMAT tutors also offer professional guidance and insights on strategic GMAT test-taking. Avail yourself of free GMAT prep software that provides sample test questions for you to practice. The creators of the GMAT recommend creating a structured study plan detailing when you will study each day and what topics you will study during each session. Take into account what style of learning works best for you (solo study, one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, study groups, prep courses) and proceed accordingly. The test is made up of these four categories, each with an allotted time:

      • Analytical writing assessment: 1 topic, 30 minutes.
      • Integrated reasoning: 12 questions, 30 minutes.
      • Quantitative: 37 questions, 75 minutes.
      • Verbal: 41 questions: 75 minutes.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
