"Stephen Perry is a godsend. I was seeking someone to care for my high maintence, food obcessed lab. I contacted numerous kennels, all seemed to provide the same answers, super high cost, impersonal care, and so many rules and restrictions. I did not want Abbi to be stuck in a small kennel for periods of time while they allowed her out for "play time". I envisioned a place where she could run free and be part of a dog pack. This was not for daily care but rather for long vacations and trips we would take three or four times a year. I wanted her to be happy while we were away, a home away from home. I started asking around to friends if they knew of someone. I didn't think a person existed that could provide what I wanted. It seemed too good to be true. When I started to lose hope I got a call back about a guy named Stephen and he was described to be as a "dog whisperer". I laughed and thought, uh huh. Sure. Sure he is. Having nothing left to lose but my dogs well being I decided to call him an have a chat. I was instantly comfortable with him. He agreed to try Abbi out and assured me she would be fine. We gave it a shot and I have never looked back. There is no one else I would leave my dog with. Stephen truly loves dogs and loves what he does. Abbi was instantly taken to him and "the pack". I have dropped her with him in random spots over the years (many times at his home) and she was able to join right in on leash with 12 or more other dogs. The first time I witnessed it I could not believe my eyes. All the dogs following in line on leash. It was amazing. Abbi does not walk well on leash yet with Stephen, she fit right in and happily walked off, tail wagging. He has kept her for me numerous times over the years, sometimes for a week or more at a time. He makes drop offs and picks up a breeze and will accomondate ever changing schedules and locations. He communicates well to make it happen for you. Also, while you are away he will send updates and allow you to check in on your dog via text. He will even send a pic here and there until you are comfortable. I don't worry when I am away. His home is great for dogs to all room together and he even allows them to cuddle up inside with him on his own furniture, even his own bed. He loves and respects the dogs in his care and they love and respect him right back. They all smile and wag their tails when they are there. Abbi always comes home happy and healthy with a shiny brushed coat. You can simply tell she was loved on and had a great time. He makes sure to walk them each day and not just around the block, he makes long treks with them in beautiful dog havens like Spring Lake. Stephens pricing is more than fair and reasonable. I cannot say enough about him. If you want a great dog walker, sitter, trainer, consultant, or stand in pack, Stephen Perry is the only person for the job. You will not be disappointed with his care of your beloved dog(s). He's also an amazing person. Truly a gem. Abbi loves to go to "dog camp" And anytime I am away, its the only place she will be. Thank you always Stephen. You are the best! Randi and Ab Fab Lab"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

  • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
  • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
    • 45-minute visit: $28.
    • 60-minute visit: $32.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
    • 12 hours: $100.
    • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32.
