Thumbtact did the "Blind/Shade Repair" research for me and several companies contacted me and gave me a quote to repair my two sets of French door shades. I went with Todd Ashley of AB Blinds. Upon arrival Todd examined my two sets of French door shades and told me that only one set of French door shades needed repair. Todd completed the repair in less than an hour. The final price was obviously less than the quote. The shades work like new and I am very happy with the work that was done and the price I paid.

Jose from JP Custom Home Construction is a total pro. Courteous, punctual, and a great value. I scraped a popcorn ceiling in one of my bedrooms; Jose sanded, taped, texturized, painted, ran electric, and installed a ceiling fan/light. Amazing work. I will definitely be using this little company again!

After interviewing multiple contractors for our project over a few weeks, things were looking bleak. However, I knew Fabulous Homes was definitely the correct one to hire once I spoke with Cheryl Cason. She not only completed the job with a quick professional manner but it was also on time and within budget. There was no question that her and her team had everything under control from start to finish. I was blown away by her vast knowledge, attention to detail and great communication skills. As soon as the project was done, I had already hired her again for another project and also referred her to another friend for their project. I would highly recommend Fabulous Homes to anyone needing a construction project completed.

I was very happy with the completed landscape project. Bill Sullivan sent 2 extremely good workers who removed a giant yucca plant, added to an existing wall while finishing it with stucco and a flagstone cap, as well as created a beautiful border between the sidewalk and the front yard with attractive-looking pavers. The price was fair and the quality, as well as the aesthetic of the finished work was excellent. I do think Mr. Sullivan knows his construction business, but he is not as responsive or really good at communication as I would have preferred. All in all though, if you are patient and flexible, the work was done very well.

I needed someone to come trim 2 extremely tall (over 25 ft.) out-of-control palm trees. Enrique came to the house the same day I contacted him. From the first handshake, I knew he was an extremely honest, knowledgeable guy who really cares about plants and trees. His price quote was very reasonable and he left the area cleaner than when he and his assistant began the job. Not only that, but I hired his wife to clean my house and she is fantastic! Enrique was back at my house yesterday afternoon to discuss another landscaping project, putting down new gravel on the parkway adjoining my driveway and really delineating the space, and again, he just took a look at the space after measuring and was able to give me a very decent quote for the work involved. I have full trust in this honest, very professional guy with a great work ethic. I would recommend him to anyone without hesitation.

GW Construction helped me with a remodel. The job consisted of uprighting a 12 ft. support beam and approximately 25 drywall panels. The price was a lot less than other contractors that bid on the job and they completed the job in one week. Matt and Jody communicated with me on a daily basis asking how the job was going. They were absolutely dedicated to my satisfaction. The contractors that worked on the project were professional and made me laugh all day long. They even let me know when they saw a better idea for my remodel or saw something that we needed to tweak to make it look better. No fuss, no hassle, no problems. Matt gives you his price and sticks to it, even if something comes up and a little more work needs to be done. Overall a great experience and a job well done!

I though John communicated very well during our construction project. He was very flexible on any changes. Most contractors are very flaky; not showing up on time or wanting to get paid before the project is completed. You will not go wrong hiring John. He is top shelf.

Charles and his crew did an awesome job on my kitchen. The knowledge and experience shows. Their attention to detail and quality of work is well above others who have worked on my home. I'm working with Charles now to remodel my master bathroom. I would recommend CBCS for any project you may have

After a phone chat, I sent Mr. Duin an e-mail outlining the projects I had in mind. I asked him to help me select those that fit into my quarterly budgets. Together we selected three that needed attention this winter. 1. stabilize a wobbly 6 foot block (gate) wall that was inches from a gas main, 2. Build a short block wall that would hold back dirt from a muddy embankment, 3. Reinforce a swaying wood fence and wrap metal posts with cedar – box style. Mr. Duin and staff did an outstanding job of listening to my needs. I was impressed with their work, quality of materials, work ethics and attention to detail. They were very pleasant to work with and I look forward to our next round of projects. I hope to include the trim/molding (with up lighting) along the ceiling of my front porch which will have to wait until early Spring – due to budget considerations.

We just wrapped up the fence project for our house which was massive. Dick followed my concept and made revisions whenever i required. It was fun and easy to work with him. There's always a 2 way mindset. It turned out excellent, including the trellis and pergola. The 2 small gates out front to give us security was installed and my overall look is splendid to view! Would recommend Dick to anyone having a home project. He delivers!

Our Condominium Association has used KSH Construction for structural repairs for balconies and we have found that we can trust them to do quality workmanship with no short cuts or improper repairs. They will work with our vendors and assist in coordinating a job to it's final completion. They also have excellent customer service with community members during the entire construction process. Since we are able to trust KSH to provide our community with quality of work, our plan is to use their services for various repairs throughout our community for a very long time.

Jordan and Jose worked hard to deliver what was asked for, for the agreed price, and did not disappoint. Was hesitant to bring an unreviewed contractor in my home since I’ve had poor workmanship in the past, but they are a new business that hopefully will suit all future customers needs as they did mine. Small baseboard job around bed and bath area was done well.

About

We have the dedication to quality and the passion for originality. For 8 years, remodeling homes was second to creative freedom, which for Jordan Hamilton, was building award winning custom choppers and classic cars. In the trade, he learned the importance of precision and detail, mastering many trades to build what truly was a higher standard. After 8 years of focusing on choppers and remodeling homes on the side, Hamilton made a simple switch: homes full time and motorcycles and classic cars as a hobby. “I love remodeling homes”, he says, “because you can get just as creative with a home as you can with a bike or a car. I like making things unique.” So after a conversation with professional skateboarder Christian Hosoi who kept repeating the words to Hamilton “ministry is first, and business is second”, the phrase popped into his head after weeks of contemplating the conversation... “Christ First.” No, Jordan or his crew won’t demand that you go to church with them. Instead, they simply want to put out an honest product and an honest price.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How much does a project manager charge per hour?

You may choose to hire a construction project manager for your residential or commercial project. For the hands-on homeowner who wants to be involved in home construction but isn’t comfortable hiring subcontractors, a construction project manager can oversee these relationships and supervise labor. Typically, construction project managers charge a fee that is a flat percentage of the total construction project cost. This may range from 10 percent to 15 percent, depending on the company and the services they provide. This means a $30,000 home remodel project would have a construction project management fee of $3,000-$4,500. Hiring a construction project manager generally precludes the markup on subcontractor labor charged by a general contractor. The drawback to this choice is that, unlike a general contractor, the construction project manager won’t be financially responsible for the work of the subcontractors. For larger projects, you may hire a construction project manager who will also hire a general contractor. This provides the benefits of the general contractor along with the management services of the project manager, who will be on board from the beginning. The construction project manager will be involved in the design phase and work with the architects and the building crew, facilitating a smoother overall process.

What is a contractor license number?

A contractor license number is proof that your contractor is operating their business legally, that they have the proper documentation required by your state or region, and that they are competent in their area of work (electrical, plumbing, construction, etc.). Licensed contractors should freely advertise their contractor license number. If not, you can request it before considering them for hire. You can also research your contractor using their license number. The database for your state will indicate the field they are licensed to work in; whether they are up to date on insurance, workers’ compensation and bonds; and whether they have any consumer complaints issued against them. If the licensed contractor you are hiring does not have employees, they are not required to carry workers’ compensation. Each state or region will have their own database for licenses, such as the State of Oregon Construction Contractors Board. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
