Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Ricardo is a pro electrician. Not only was he very flexible to work around my schedule, he even stayed in contact throughout to make sure I understand that he will be there to get the work done. He arrived on time and tirelessly worked for 5.5 hours to complete the door bell installation and adding additional wall sockets and breakers for two a/c units in two rooms. His price is very affordable and he provides the basic material. I will definitely use Ricardo for all my electrical needs and will recommend him to anyone for their electrical needs.

Where to start? Was having problems some outlets in my house, one whole circuit breaker was not working. I called Al to troubleshoot the problem, worked out a price, said it was good for up to 2 hours. Al said he would be out first thing in the morning, my wife waited all morning he showed up at 1 pm. First red flag! Next he “fixed” the problem in 15 mins said it was just a “loose wire”. Last night my kitchen almost caught fire!! I pulled off the outlet AND THE WIRES WERE GLOWING RED AND THE BOX WAS MELTED!!! Now, having just paid an electrician to come out and troubleshoot the problem. This was very irritating to me, I have a wife and a two-year-old baby!!! We could have all died!! My House could’ve burned down. Now, when I called Al, he claimed that he didn’t touch that outlet, and my old wiring is not his responsibility. Which to be fair he is absolutely correct about. But I also paid him in amount to troubleshoot a problem which he spent five minutes doing, said it was fixed , took my money, and left. So anyways, I talked to AL last night said he would be out in the morning to look at it (and I’d have to pay another fee for to troubleshoot the problem again). I begrudgingly excepted and figured we could work something out. After I hung up with him I got a text from him saying that he would not come as it has nothing to do with him!!?! WTF?!! The man had no empathy, he was not concerned that my house almost burn down, or that I almost lost my family. He was only concerned with covering his own ass. Now, I have to pay for a real electrician to come out and troubleshoot the problem. I hope your experience with Al electric is much better than mine was, hopefully he doesn’t burn your house down or your family doesn’t die in a horrible house fire.
