"I ran to the closest Guitar Center, bought a guitar, and started taking lessons there. For three months, however, I found myself stuck on the most basic things. For instance, I didn't know what to do with subdivisions, yet my teacher back then didn't say much as I butchered one piece after another. I had no idea whether I didn't try hard enough or if I was on the wrong track.
After enough frustrations, I Googled "guitar teachers in East Bay" and found Michael's "Groove Lab" (it was the name that initially caught my eye). Even over the phone I could strongly sense Michael's joy and passion for teaching this instrument. He seemed to be a super upbeat person (no pun intended) and have a sophisticated teaching philosophy.
I started taking lessons with Michael since this August, and it was everything and more! He explains concepts clearly and puts them to immediate practice. Within a few moments, for example, I learned how to count 8th notes, which I'd been struggling with for months. When things don't go as smoothly at first, he is patient, encouraging, and tries out different methods with me until something clicks. Apart from the lessons, I highly enjoy the personalized exercises that Michael developed for students, which are fun and just at the right level of difficulty. Moreover, I'm pleasantly surprised by how responsive Michael is to questions I ask after class, which I'm grateful for.
If you're reading this and trying to find a guitar teacher, I'd say Michael is the one! In terms of personality, pedagogy, and commitment, I can hardly imagine a better teacher!"
