Jiri in the office quoted 2 men for $80 an hour, or 3 men for $105 an hour. I gave Jiri explicit information and asked for an estimate on what he thought the final cost would be. Jiri said because of afternoon traffic, it could cost between $250 and $300. It took 2 hours, the men worked fast, wasted no time and worked quickly and professionally. However, Jiri charged $300 for the job anyway. Not the 2 men at $80 or $160 total quote. I paid the men $240, because they were good and it was not their fault but it was Jiri in the office I had the problem with. Plus, at this point, I was then told there was a $240 minimum. First I heard of that, and it should have mentioned before and been put in writing. I have my notes, no, never mentioned that. The men told me to take it up with Jiri. I was ready to give them a big tip but by then I was frustrated and annoyed. Not my first rodeo, Jiri. I've moved before. You don't get away with that. Stick to the quote, don't give an estimate of the job that is inflated and then try to stick to that, and if there is a minimum, put that in writing on the quote. Or was it possibly just a misunderstanding? In that case, you owe me $80. I had a positive experience with Santos and Edgar from Two Friends Movers who helped move my one-bedroom apartment to San Francisco (between 25 and 30 miles out). They were easy to work with and in good disposition, and made the the moving process that much better. Thanks to Santos, I was able to request 2 movers and negotiate the minimum charge down from 3 hours to 2 hours, which helped as it took 2.5 hours from arrival to invoice, (with 30-40 minutes of driving). I took care of all but the larger pieces of furniture and around 5 heavy boxes/bags independently from Two Friends to minimize the charge, so there weren't too many things we were actually transporting that day. Both Santos and Edgar were nice and accommodating in my requests throughout the move, although I communicated mostly with Santos as Edgar was not fluent in English. Not a problem whatsoever, and perhaps a note to myself to start learning Spanish :) For example, I requested that extra blankets and wrap be put on the legs of my work desk and bed frame backboard which weren't covered, and Santos took care of it promptly and without hesitation. The hourly rate for two movers is on the cheaper side compared to the other quotes I received on Thumbtack, but I did notice they make up for it in materials fees for packing tape and plastic wrap—something to be aware of when estimating. The materials cost in my case ran me an extra $75. A note to the wise: it's a good idea to make sure you have the sum of money in cash or personal check handy, as the 5% processing fee also applies to debit cards. I ended up running (literally) to the ATM and back to get cash when I realized my checkbook was left at my old place. Overall, I was satisfied with my move with Two Friends and would hire them again.

Steve the owner was great with his communication. They were fast, careful and efficient. Only thing I would recommend is if that British guy (one of the movers) would be nicer and more courteous. He was not that nice. Steve and the other guy was very accommodating and nice.

Professional moving and handyman company. I hired Harp and his movers when my movers did not show up. They came within 2 hours after responding my call. They moved my 750 pound piano, heavy furniture and sofa bed from 4th floor narrow stairs case to 2nd floor move in place. They also do handyman service. They also mount tvs and hang pictures at my new place. I recomend their service.

I highly recommend Ddt movers! They ensured our move went smoothly and didn't mind staying an hour longer because we had so much stuff and underestimated the time. It was really impressive to see how easy they made our move look! :-)

I had a great experience with these guys. They care about the quality of their work, and they have good hearts. The move was in a timely manner, reasonably priced, and with only 1% margin of error on damages (good for movers). I would highly recommend them.

This was my first time trying to hire a professional via Thumbtack platform and it was a very good experience. After submiting the request, I received 3 quotes from different movers, and Pavel was one of them. He stood out among the three because of his responsiveness and reasonable price. Before hiring him, I was a bit concerned given that he had only one review before. But Im glad that I decided to hire him. Pavel was very careful with my stuffs, especially my computer (they also provided a small blanket to cover my table top) He was flexible as well when I asked him if he could stop by Ikea and Living Spaces store for me to pick up some furniture. Overall, I give Pavel and his crew 5 stars for their professionalism. I'll definitely contact him again for future move

Fresh Start Movers will make your moving day a breeze. My move was a local move and was completed in one day. It started with talking to the owner (Kyle) who scheduled the move. I had to make a date change and also asked questions about the pricing and details of the move, he was very helpful and courteous in all conversations that I had with him. During the move, James and his team were the best. They showed up on time and ready to go. They completed the move within the time frame indicated and moved everything with care and professional efficiency. Totally polite and every mover had a great attitude and appeared to enjoy their work. One of the movers sang to himself while working and his apparent cheerfulness is contagious. Overall, this is a great company and I will definitely recommend to all my friends who move.

I hired MP Movers (Marquiz) to assemble a 6 drawer IKEA dresser. He arrived right on time and was very polite. The dresser came in 3 different boxes which had to be moved downstairs to my daughter's room, which he did for me. He was so conscientious that at one point the instructions didn't match the materials and he brought this to my attention. He quoted me a flat fee and stuck to that. All in all, I couldn't have been happier and I will definitely hire MP Movers again. I highly recommend Marquiz and MP Movers.

I hired this amazing team of movers to haul some items from a warehouse in San Francisco. I couldn't speak more highly of their professionalism, their commitment to getting the job done, and how easy it was to communicate with them. From the very first phone call to updates all along the way to the final delivery this was an absolute A+ experience all the way around and I look forward to hiring them again for any of my future moves.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.
