I was extremely impressed with James -- we've had bad experiences with piano tuners in the past (not from Thumbtack) and James was everything we could have hoped for. Professional, punctual and good at his craft. We are so happy to have found the piano tuner we'll use going forward!

Jeff is absolutely one of the most professional and courteous piano tuner/appraisers I have met. He called me the night before my appointment as a much needed courtesy. He showed up on time, was polite, even with my toddler underfoot. He tuned our piano that had not been tuned in over 10 years and made it sound wonderful. He also took the time to talk directly to my State Farm insurance agent so that my insurance appraisal (another service he offers) met the requirements of my carrier. Most importantly, there were no hidden fees, I paid what he said it would cost when he initially made the appointment. I also found his price was very reasonable for his level of expertise and quality of his work. Thank you Jeff, see you at the end of the year for another tune!

Daniel was recommended to us by my daughters' previous piano teacher. Daniel has been taking care of our piano from the time our girls were doing their beginning Suzuki pieces (6 years ago) to now. Our piano is great, but as soon as he is done, our girls want to play on it, because they say "it sounds so good". And Suzuki kids know how the notes are supposed to sound! We appreciate the quality of Daniel's work, his professionalism, punctuality and responsiveness. I would highly recommend him if you are looking for piano tuning services.

Tuned my piano and repaired a number of issues. Had all the tools he needed, and plenty of expertise. Recommended some more maintenance but did not push me to spend more. Very positive experience.

Jackson is a great piano tuner. He not only does that but always gives my baby grand a good cleaning. He even recommended a way to deal with the humidity of living in San Francisco. Hi highly recommend him!

e did a great job on my piano, and was a great value. The prices by themselves can be a little more than other techs in the area, but the value was outstanding. He didn't just tune the piano and leave, but he also cleaned the inside and outside, made the keys nice, and made a few adjustments inside to that fixed a problem with a key I'd been having. Great job!

I am an active concert pianist and teacher and have known Larry Lobel for 6 years. Since he began working on my pianos 6 years ago, I have found him to be by far the most sophisticated, knowledgeable and unique technician I have ever worked with. He has the ability to listen to what I feel my piano needs at the moment whether it is an extensive regulation job, a light regulation job, or just a tuning and voicing job. He has the ability to analyze my requests and to tell me if I am on the mark or not. And if I am not on the mark, he finds it !! He is the best ! I recommend him without reservation. In addition, he is very personable and easy to work with.

A Note from Linda: In 1973, I was the very first female admitted to the Los Angeles Chapter of the PTG (Piano Technicians Guild). At that time, I was the third woman in the country admitted to the Guild. Breaking the glass ceiling was not easy. Tuning: A combination of aural (tuning by ear) and state-of-the-art electronic tuning helps achieve the most stable and precise tuning for each piano. Manufacturers recommend 2-4 tunings per year. Concert pianos require tuning immediately before each performance. It is important to note that all piano manufacturers recommend tuning your piano whether it is played or not. Routine service prolongs the life of your piano. Without periodic servicing, the instrument will deteriorate, causing potential expensive repairs at a later date. Pitch raise: A pitch raise is necessary when the piano has not been tuned regularly, thus causing the pitch to drop below standard pitch (A440). Pitch raises require 2 or more complete tunings that are done consecutively during the same visit. Repairs: Repairs can vary from something as simple as fixing a sticky key to something as complex as complete rebuilding of the piano. Regulating: Regulation is the adjustment of the piano due to the effects of wear and age. Voicing: Correcting the tone quality of the hammers. Reconditioning: With playing and age, the insides of the piano (the action) require maintenance to maintain performance. This work is done in the shop. The action of the piano is removed and then returned when the work is complete. Refurbishing: Bringing life back into the piano by renovating and restoring worn parts. Restringing: Time and humidity conditions can cause strings to become rusty or “dead”. Restringing is then necessary. Often, it is accompanied by complete rebuilding inside and out. Rebuilding: The art of completely restringing, repairing and refurbishing the soundboard and plate, together with replacing parts that have excessive wear, thus making the piano as good, if not better, than it was originally. Consultations and evaluations: When purchasing a used piano, it is always advisable for a member of the Piano Technician’s Guild to evaluate the potential purchase. Examination of the instrument will reveal both major and minor problems and the corresponding costs to repair. It is just like having a used car examined by a mechanic before purchasing. For an appointment or estimate, contact Linda Kay!
