I hired Harp to fix the installation of the legs to our new air hockey table which we installed incorrectly. Not only did Harp fix what we knew we installed wrong, he found something else about the installation which was vital to its stability and fixed it too. I also had him look at a couple of other small projects and he went above and beyond my expectations for their repairs too. I have had Harp come to the house one other time for repairs and I'm scheduling another. He is extremely capable at fixing everything I've asked--be it carpentry, electrical, plumbing and even gardening.

Simply put, Jose was wonderful to work with! I came home to work to find the unpleasant surprise of a badly leaking water heater. After a little research I turned it off and determined that after its 18 year life, it needed to be replaced. After putting up my request on Thumbtack, Jose was very quick to respond and gave me some great options on how to proceed. Not only did he pick up a new water heater for me on the way, but he stopped at TWO different Home Depots to find the best one in my price range. Not to mention, this was done relatively late in the evening. His flexibility was great. Once he arrived he was very thorough and professional. He quickly installed the water heater and made sure that everything was working as designed. He even followed up the next morning to see if there was anything else that was needed. A+ overall, and I will definitely be using Jose again if something should arise with my plumbing elsewhere.

Ronaldo with Bright Ideas plumbing was a light shining through a very stressful situation. His communication was prompt and direct, his timing was excellent, his quote was no nonsense, and his work fast and excellent. Next time, I will skip thumbtack all together and call Ronaldo directly. I really can't express enough how satisfied I am.

Oscar said he would come by between 4-5 to snake our sink drain. He showed up at 4:45, and took less than an hour to completely snake the sink and resolve an impressive clog. He was efficient and timely, I'd definitely call him for another plumbing issue.

We found Salinas home remodeling services most helpful in several ways. Services done for us included electrical wiring, plumbing installation, wall and ceiling painting with texture applications. Also, bathtub, sink and appliance installation. All work was done at high standards. Note: we also experienced generous and positive attitudes from soft spoken professionals, and received on time service. Above all, we have memories of his installation process that are most rewarding. Thank You, Mr. Vyron Salinas and his helper Pablo. Yours truly, Nicholas Adkins

I needed to replace the valves in my laundry room and fix a leaky shower head. Valentino from Deals on Wheels Plumbing reached out with his phone number and agreed to come in the very same day. He arrived on time, looked at the issues, quoted a fair price up front and completed the job very efficiently. Valentino is very personable, friendly, professional and I would definitely hire him again for any plumbing needs.

I had a Kitchen drain that was clogged. David responded, we agreed on a reasonable offer and he was out the next day to complete the job. He was kind, professional and on-time (even a couple of minutes early). He put down a plastic tarp around the work area and was very clean and cleaned up after himself. I was VERY pleased with his responsiveness and work overall, I would def call him for any future repairs. He hit every mark on what one expects from a service professional and I think you'd make a good choice going with him. I have had to hire a plumber at a previous residence and it cost twice as much for a similar job. Glad I found him!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
