I recorded a couple songs with Dave. He's a cool guy who knows his stuff! He's got a really solid and professional setup and he's accommodating to the artist's wants. I would recommend his studio! Just be careful getting in and out of the driveway. I found it's easier to drive a bit past it and back in, then you can cruise out of there with ease when you leave.Jan 19, 2015Verified
I went into Shine On Studio knowing very little about the recording/mixing process. David is very knowledgeable in this field, and was with us every step of the way. He made sure that our recording tracks and the effects were exactly what we had in our mind. Even when our session went beyond the pre-set time, he was happy to work with us to perfect the tracks - we even did additional work over e-mail after I listened to it at home. I would definitely go back in the future for any recording projects!Feb 17, 2014Verified
David is a good guy with a deep and rich understanding of the music industry. He has his way of doing things and accommodates for your needs. However being a producer, he was unable to give me the stems (split tracks of a song), which is what I needed without demanding a premium price. I was naturally disappointed but understood the difficulties in his workflow. Still, I bounce questions of David from time to time about audio production and engineering. He is responsive and gives me honest advice. Despite the difficulties I encountered with Shine On Studios, I would still recommend my future clients to record with him in his studio but I will also be giving a word of caution to all my producer friends, who work with stems like I do.May 7, 2014Verified
This review is based on my vocal recording session at Shine On Studios with David Hughes. The session started on time. The vocal recording went very smoothly and David Hughes really knows his quipment. The studio singer (recommended by David Hughes, himself) did an outstanding performance. The equipment that Shine On Studios uses is of superb quality and can give studios of major record labels a run for the money for a fraction of the cost. I highly recommend Shine On Studios to anyone wanting to have the best quality vocal recording without breaking the bank. I can't wait to try my instrument tracking and mixing/mastering on my next time at the studio. David Hughes is trully what we need as independent Producers, Singers, and Songwriters here in The Bay Area. So stop procrastinating everyone, it's your turn to shine!! Simply put, it's FANTASTIC!!!Apr 5, 2014Verified
This review is long overdue, but better late than never. I came to David with 11 songs that I had recorded with very basic recording equipment and I was really just looking for a professional touch-up of all of my rough mixes. I ended up booking three mixing sessions and a mastering session at Shine On Studio over the span of a few months. He was very professional and makes you feel right at home in his studio. I have to admit that I was a bit apprehensive to get someone else to mix a collection of songs that I had been mixing myself for almost 5 years, but he completely fulfilled my original vision and did an excellent job at maintaining the sound that I had in mind. He was very generous with his time and made sure that I was happy with the product every step of the way. If youre looking for someone to take your music to another level, give David a call at Shine On Studio.Dec 11, 2013Verified
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)? We have standard hourly rates. Please contact us for an estimate of the studio time you will need for your project. For clients that want to invest a little more time into their projects, we have a studio membership. The membership consists of a monthly fee that includes reduced rates for members. The hours will accrue on the account until they are used, so you can sign up for a membership now and use the hours that build upon the account later in the year. This is a great way to budget a recording session and spread out the investment. Members will also receive promotions on studio services and events that are not available to the public. Visit our site for full details.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?I like to meet with a client at the studio to get an idea for the project and the direction it will take. It's good to get everyone on the same page so that when production starts, the process is efficient and the creative ideas can contribute to the production process. We do offer free consultation meetings at the studio. Please visit our website and navigate to the booking page for appointments.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?I graduated at the top of my class in 2001. Since then, I've been continuing to educate myself on the advances in audio production. I currently teach audio production for the Recording Connection school based out of Los Angeles, CA. Students come to me to learn the essentials needed for professional audio production. I have 1on1 lessons with students to get them up to speed on the critical aspects of recording and mixing. Once a student completes my courses, they're prepared and skilled to work as an audio engineer. We're working with Pro Tools HD10 in our studio production. I like to know all options and the full capabilities of my software. I strive to learn more about audio production every day. With the ever-changing world of digital media, this learning process will be an endless endeavor. I do teach private and group classes for learning audio production and Pro Tools Software. If you're looking for a few new techniques to have on your palette, give me a call and we can arrange a lesson package that will give you an edge on your production skills.
